Chapter Text

Fucking Deku. Piece of shit.

Ah, there it was. Like clockwork.

The thoughts of your soulmate flood your mind, the intensity and anger of them make you roll your eyes. He sure was bothersome.

You are so incredibly annoying. Do you know that? God if I wasn’t your soulmate I’d think this Deku kid was with the way you think about him so often.

You had grown used to the always angry thoughts from your soulmate. He was... hot-headed, to say the least.

FUCKING SHUT UP. I’m not in the mood for your bullshit right now.

It had been almost 10 years since you and your very angry soulmate were connected. You remembered being so excited as midnight on your eighth birthday ticked near. Your parents had set you down for bed nearly 5 hours ago, but the excitement that you were finally going to hear your soulmate for the first time filled your little body with so much energy, how could you possibly sleep at such a precious moment?

Hush, puppy. You won’t be getting any treats later if you keep barking like that.

The first thought that entered your mind the second the clock hit midnight scared the life out of you. It was loud, angry and full of what you could only assume was pure hatred. In an instant you were scrambling out of you bed and diving in between your parents, sobbing loudly and hold your hands over your ears, as if that would make it stop.

I swear to god, when I find you I’m gonna kill ya, fuckin’ soulmate or not.

You giggled, he was so easy to rile up. You could just imagine the look on his face, scrunched up in anger as he was probably busy driving his fist through the nearest wall.

That wouldn’t be very nice, puppy. You would be ever so lonely without me in your head, wouldn’t you?

He was so fun to tease.

As if, get over yourself. I don’t need some dumb soulmate holding me back from being the number one hero, you got that? Keep your shitty comments to yourself and stay outta my fuckin’ head.

Over the years, you had learned very little about him. You only knew his given name, Katsuki, and that he lived somewhere in Japan. At least you were in the same country, and you didn’t need to travel across the entire world should you ever decide to go looking for him. He had made the mistake once or twice of thinking about his embarrassing childhood nickname ‘Deku’ gave him.

Awe, Kacchan, don’t be so mean. I doubt you would ever be able to lay a hand on my cute face once you see me.

It was a simple pleasure, really, seeing how far you could push his buttons on any given day. Most days he would only quip back once or twice, it was a rare occassion nowadays that he stuck around in your thoughts for this long. You could recount plenty of times in your youth where you were able to infuriate him to the point where you had a massive migraine for at least two day straight.

In listening to him think incessantly to himself over the years— you were sure most of the time he forgot you could even hear his thoughts— you had managed to work out that he was a student in the hero course at U.A High School. He never asked so you never bothered telling him, but you class was right down the hall. You figured it would be more fun if you let him find out himself that you had been right under his nose all these years.

I told you not to fuckin’ call me that. Maybe instead of pissing me off all the damn time, you should use that head of yours for something smart for once.

You giggled again, the weak insult not leaving a mark in the slightest. When his patience wore thin like this, his brain stopped working and the remarks he thought of were that of an elementary schooler’s. With an incredibly liberal use of swear words, of course.

Before you could throw back another sardonic remark, Katsuki’s voice chimed in again;

Listen, I’ve had a shit fucking day and I’m not in the mood for this right now. Just be quiet and let me be alone with my stupid fucking thoughts.

Oh.

Oh, wow.

That was... an incredibly soft (minus the liberal use of the word ‘fucking,’) request, especially coming from the loud, obnoxious, rude, annoying soulmate you had. You could practically feel the fury leave his thoughts as it was replaced with a down-trodden, almost self-loathing feeling. It was very new.

In the just about ten years of being stuck with knowing your soulmate, you learned very little. But occasionally, you would get a glimpse of what made him creak the way he did. He was a prideful man, ego bigger than any you had seen. He hated weakness with a passion, he hated losing just as much. You knew from being victim to his thoughts for years that, deep down, he was still human. And sometimes, you saw him crack.

It wasn’t very often, or for very long, but you knew when it happened. You remembered back in your first year, after an intense class with Pro Hero All Might, he cried. He genuinely cried. You couldn’t tell why, couldn’t ask why, the flurry of his thoughts at the time disorienting you. You had managed to piece together he got into some sort of argument, per say, with Deku but past that you were left to grasp at straws.

Uh, right... Okay. I’ll let you be, Katsuki.

You listened in briefly, to see if he would think anything, whether in response to you or just letting himself be consumed by his thoughts. It didn’t happen, only radio silence meeting you on the other end. You sighed and stopped trying to listen. You felt nauseous at the rush of feeling his once very prominent thoughts leave your head, landing you back in with purely your own.

You puffed out a sigh, standing from your bed to stretch and crack your aching bones. Katsuki always managed to make you tense in the worst ways. What a bother.

Grabbing your phone from your bedside table, you pressed the button and the screen lit up. Two missed texts. One from a friend your course, asking for you answers for the homework due tomorrow morning. You decided you would answer later. The second text was one that caught your interest more.

Your overenthusiastic hero course friend, Uraraka Ochaco. You were, to be quite honest with yourself, unsure of how the two of you had become friends. You briefly remember her saving you from being trampled in the cafeteria and since then you had stuck together like glue. She was the only person in the world who knew who your soulmate was. You hadn’t even told your parents, having to bite your tongue every time you saw him on the news or in papers.

A smile quirked to your lips as you read Uraraka’s text. Since learning of your soulmate, she took it upon herself to update you with information every few days. She told you about random things that happened, as well as noting just about every time Katsuki screamed at Izuku Midoriya (the name you found out belonged to Deku) or another one of their classmates. She liked to note, giggling as she did, about his rather one-side rivalry with Todoroki Shoto.

As you read her first message, a follow-up popped up before you could respond.

Ocha: Hihi!! ( ̄▽ ̄)ノ Hope your day has been good! Lots happened today (°ロ°) !

        Ocha: Let’s meet for boba if you’re not busy! (´ ε ` )♡

Uraraka’s fondness for emoticons was something you found cute, the little faces she attached to her messages never failed to bring a smile to your face. (You found out she only used them because she still had a flip phone, instead of a smart phone, but the fact only made her emoticons cuter.)

You sent her a quick reply, letting her know you were on your way and would meet her there. You felt your phone ping again as you slipped it into your pocket but, expecting it just to be Uraraka sending you an emoticon thumbs up, you decided it was fine to ignore it.

Rushing down the stairs, still in your uniform as you hadn’t bothered to change when you got home, you threw on your shoes and shouted a haphazard ‘Be back later!’ to your parents before they could even ask where you were off to. The café you and Uraraka frequented was only a short jog from your house and a block or two away from U.A. She hadn’t told you if she had just gotten out of class when she texted you, so you assumed you’d probably get there before her.

In record time, you made to the door of the small, hole in the wall café just as you saw Uraraka at the opposite end of the street. You called out to her, waving your arm frantically in the air to get her attention. Even from far away, you could see how she perked up, her arm shooting up as well to wave back, picking up her pace into a jog to reach you quicker. Once within arms reach, she pulled into a tight squeeze. It had been a while since the two of you last got to hang out in person.

You laughed, returning the hug before having to practically push her off of you. You fell into amicable chatter as you walked into the café, Uraraka asking about your day before you in turn asked about hers. It was never dull talking to Uraraka, even if all she did was tell you about something small that happened in her English that morning. You opted to wait in line to grab the drinks for both of you while Uraraka gave you the change for her drink before quickly skittering off to claim one of the last empty tables. For such a small café, it really got busy after school.

Paying for your drinks, making sure to drop a little extra into the tip jar from the both of you. Your face flushed as the sweet old lady who ran the shop slid a small pastry across the counter, holding a finger to her lips. You thanked her profusely before she shooed you off. Sliding into the chair across from Uraraka, you didn’t miss the way her eyes lit up at the sight of the sweet treat along with her drink. She instantly grabbed onto it, waiting for you to grab the other half before pulling it apart, splitting it almost evenly in two.

“So,” you began, taking a sip of your drink before continuing, “what happened today that’s so exciting we had to meet in person? Been a while since we hung out together, I was beginning to think you hated me.”

Of course, you were joking and of course, Uraraka knew that. Yet she still played into it every time, throwing a hand over her chest dramatically and looking at you with the worst puppy dog eyes you’d ever seen. “How could you think I don’t love you anymore? You wound me...”

She closed her eyes and sniffled, faking wiping a tear away before cracking an eye open and sticking her tongue out at you. You burst into laughter at her sad preformance, Uraraka following in suit soon after. You really did miss hanging out with her.

After calming down from your bout of laughter, Uraraka quickly scoffing down her half of the pastry and almost half of her drink, she continued. “Well, today in hero training we were doing practicals, right?”

You nodded along, biting into the pastry yourself now and almost melting at how good it was.

“Bakugo got paired against Midoriya, which has never and probably will never end well,” she sighed, rolling her eyes. “Gosh, they’re about to graduate and Bakugo still can’t let go of grudge from two years ago?”

She was mostly muttering the last part to herself, but you couldn’t help but snicker. At least you knew part of the reason why Bakugo was upset earlier. You had to bite your lip to prevent you from laughing any harder at the thought of Bakugo throwing some kind of fit and stomping his feet like a child.

“Well, in the middle of their fight, Bakugo just starts screaming at Midoriya— huh?” Uraraka pauses, craning her neck to look past you and you hear the bell on the door chime. Now interested in what Uraraka finds so interesting, you turn around as well, watching as a group of three boys step into the café. Two of the three are quick to run up the counter, ready to attack the case of pastries your think while their third friends trails slowly behind them.

At any other time, you would have simply played dumb and pretended as if you didn’t know or didn’t recognize them, but with Uraraka sitting across from you, her eyebrows furrowed slightly as a pout grew on her lips, you simply couldn’t afford that luxury. You thought for a moment you heard Uraraka mumble ‘this is my spot..’ and you have to suppress a laugh. She was jealous her classmates found her ‘secret’ little café?

You both watch the three order, well really it was the first two who ordered while their third friend stayed quiet the entire time. He must still be in a bad mood, you couldn’t help but snicker lightly. It’s then that Uraraka’s friends notice the two of you, the excitable blond almost instantly bounding over to say hi to her. They exchange a friendly greeting briefly before he notices your precense and becomes practically a ray of sunshine in your face.

Uraraka had told you the names of her classmates before, even going so far to point out their faces to help you remember. You could tell almost immediatley that this was Kaminari, someone Uraraka regarded as a good friend, but also as a thorn in her side sometimes. Apparently, he was a notorious flirt, even though he knew who his soulmate was and was undoubtedly committed to them.

“And just who might this be? You hiding all your cute friends from me, Uraraka?” He asked, feigning hurt as he glanced between you and Uraraka. You had to stop yourself from bursting into laughter as Uraraka deadpanned at him and spoke bluntly.

“Yes.”

Almost comically, as though you were in some sort of anime, Kaminari feigned collapsing. An overly dramatic sigh, the back of his right hand pressed to his forehead and he fell backwards into his awaiting red-haired friends arms. Uraraka rolled her eyes visibly, smiling though as she finished off her tea.

“What are you guys doing here?” She then asked, beckoning them to sit in the three person table that just cleared out next to you. What a coincidence... Without wasting even a second, Kaminari and his red-haired friend quickly choose to simply grab two of the chairs and pull them up next to your table. Their other friend chose to sit alone at the other table, a disinterested look on his face as he pulled out his phone. You could feel his irritated thoughts bubbling up in your mind, your eye twitching involuntarily in annoyance. You brushed it away quickly as Uraraka introduced you to her friends.

Kaminari Denki and Kirishima Eijirou were exceptionally nice, something you’d just come to expect from everyone in the hero course. Well, almost everyone. Uraraka introduced Bakugo last, throwing you a wink jokingly, as if you didn’t already know who he was. He ignored you for the most part, eyes never leaving his screen, only throwing his hand up briefly in greeting. Another twitch of your eyebrow in annoyance.

God he was just as annoying in person as he was in your mind. And you were expected to spend the rest of your life with this guy? You’d sooner eat your own foot. It was then that a thought ticked into your head. Not your own, of course, unfortunately.

Annoying as hell.

You would have pounced on him if you could. Wipe that shitty look off his face.

Thinking about me again, puppy? How sweet.

Out of the corner of your eye, you watched as Bakugo’s lip quivered up just slightly into a small smirk. Gross.

In your dreams, brat.

You grit your teeth, trying so hard to keep the smile on your face as you pretended to listen to Kaminari was saying. Bakugo had never managed to really piss you off before, maybe once or twice when you were young, but you could also feel your blood boil as you watched him smirk down at his phone. Did he always look like that when you talked? You sure hoped not.

You’re there sometimes, my hero. But other times you could never compare to... Hm, never mind.

Bingo. That struck a nerve.

You watched in amusement as his gripped his phone so tightly you thought it would shatter right then and there. Apart from that subtle movement, one you wouldn’t have even noticed had you not be glaring vehemently at him, his body language didn’t change much. Disappointing, to say the least.

Bakugo was quiet for a minute. He had stopping giving his phone a death grip, instead just staring blankly at it, his finger wasn’t even moving to even feign like he was scrolling on it. You watched his gaze slowly slide up, his head turning to face you. Upon making eye contact, you pretended as though you had just turned to glance over at him. You gave him a small wave that definitely didn’t go unnoticed by the three seated around you. You pulled your gaze from Bakugo’s, locking eyes with Uraraka briefly as she gave you a knowing look, her lip quivering as she bit back a laugh.

Still feeling Bakugo’s eyes bore into the side of your skull, you went in for the kill. Figuratively, of course.

What’s wrong, puppy? Cat got your tongue?

Bakugo’s feet slammed against the floor as he stood up, hardly muttering a farewell as he stomped angrily out the door. You had to bite into thumb to prevent you from bursting into laughter before Bakugo was out of earshot. Once you were positive he was too far away to hear you, both you and Uraraka burst into uncontrollable laughter. You felt slightly bad for Kaminari and Kirishima as they stared at the two of you like you had both gone crazy.

“What’s gotten into you guys?!” Kaminari exclaimed. You paused, sharing a look with Uraraka before bursting into laughter again.

You probably would have continued laughing like forever if not for the suddenly stern warning from the sweet old lady who ran the café. It more or less helped in corralling your laughter, though you had to clamp your hand over your mouth to keep the giggles from breaking out again.

You were definitely going to have to explain to Kaminari and Kirishima what happened later. You only hoped they could keep a secret.

It was no longer than ten minutes later that you were walking up the street with Uraraka, Kaminari and Kirishima. You didn’t bother dancing around it and, rather bluntly, dropped that you were Bakugo’s soulmate on them. They shared a look between themselves for a moment, before looking towards Uraraka who only nodded. A split second later and the two boys were rolling on the floor, clutching their stomachs in a fit of laughter. You couldn’t help the giggles bubbling up in your throat at their infectious laughter.

Oi.

The thought shocked you into pause. You hadn’t expected him to say anything to you so soon after what happened.

You ever pull a fuckin’ stunt like that again and I swear to—

You rolled your eyes. Empty threats again?

Or what, puppy? Gonna come find me, tell me I’ve been bad and punish me?

You almost couldn’t stop the sinister grin creeping up your lips. He was silent for a few moments again.

You hadn’t expected the words he then spoke to send such a jolt straight to your core, however.

Watch yourself, bunny. Before I come take you up on that offer.
