Work Text:

You woke up from a peaceful slumber, slowly opening your eyes. From the window you could see that it was just barely daylight. You felt warm and cozy, wrapped in a blanket and it seemed like the perfect scenario to just go back to sleep, until you noticed the deep, even breathing next to you. It had never happened before, but Faust was still fast asleep next to you. A mess of dark hair covered his head and framed parts of his entirely relaxed face. Your heart ached thinking that he trusted you enough to just keep sleeping.

For a while you were just lying there, watching him. There was no frown on his forehead or his teasing smirk. He looked entirely at peace for once.

While the birds quietly started to sing outside of the castle and the whole world slowly came to life, you had no intentions of moving. One could even hear movements in the corridor, meaning that Charles was probably already awake. You shifted onto your back, stretching your arms with a deep sigh. Your attention however turned quickly back towards the man still quietly sleeping by your side.

You reached out slowly and brushed your fingers through his dark hair, not able to keep yourself from touching him any longer. Physical affection was extremely important in your relationship. Never had you even considered him being such a cuddler. You snickered quietly at the thought.

And it was the sound of your voice which coaxed Faust out of his slumber. Taking another deep breath, he shifted closer to you, pulling you into his arms with a lazy movement. You decided to help him out a little and ended up snuggling against his chest. The fingertips of his hand sneaked under the blanket and started to slowly trail up and down the skin of your spine, leaving you with a pleasant shiver. Not wanting to be lulled into sleep again, you kissed his collarbone, earning yourself a low, raspy chuckle. You felt the vibrations of his laughter on his chest.

The next time you turned your face up to look at him a pair of poison green eyes looked back at you. “Good morning, Johann.”, you said with a smile, cupping his cheek into one of your hands. For a brief moment he leaned into your touch.

“Morning.”, was all he replied, always a man of few words especially this early.

None of you made any effort to move at this point, so you returned to your former position, curled up against his chest, wrapping in a blanket and his arms. How rare it was, that you two had a quiet morning together. Either Faust was already up and away in his lab or the church, or Charles would burst into your shared room announcing breakfast.

Not today, though.

A deep sense of peace settled into your heart as you listened to his steady heartbeat and time passed on. None of you are quite asleep but also not really awake.

Eventually however, Faust loosened the embrace and sat up in the bed. He reached for the nightstand and put his glasses on, closing the clip on his ear which was connected to them via a small chain. While he got out from under the sheets, you kept watching silently as he went to clean up and get dressed. Faust finished with closing the buttons on his sleeves and then his eyes were back on you. “Tea?”

You simply nodded with a smile.

“Get dressed and don’t take too long. Breakfast won’t be there for long, you know how the old man is.” He shook his head lightly, there was no smile on his face, his expression neutral but the tone of his voice was almost soft and affectionate. “See you downstairs.”

And with that he was gone, leaving you to get ready yourself, though with a sigh you mourned the loss of the warmth of your bed and his arms. Fighting against your inner voice to just stay in bed, you swung your legs out from under the covers and started your day as well.
