The moonlight shined through the window drapes of the old, cozy farmhouse, illuminating many previously shadowed sections of the home. It was nearing midnight and the building was as quiet as a mouse. Everyone’s minds were peacefully drifting away in the silence of this calm, pleasant night. All were fast asleep. All except for one.
Fone Bone’s eyes slowly opened, blinking sleepily. He looked to his left, expecting to see Thorn laying by his side. Recently, the two of them had been sharing a bed together, taking the next step in their new relationship (they'd both admitted that it was their favorite way to sleep, after only just one night). Normally, they’d sleep facing each other with their arms wrapped around one another. But, on this peculiar night, this didn't seem to be the case, the young Bone quickly discovered.
Fone sat up, and looked to his side, his confused questions being answered instantly, and not for a very fortunate reason. Thorn was hunched over on her side of the bed, holding tight to her left leg. Her head laid low, with her lazy bed-hair hiding her expression. The sound of heavy, raspy breathing filled the room’s air. Fone Bone’s eyes widened and his jaw dropped. The whole sight sent daggers to his heart. He placed the covers away and crawled his way to her side.
“Thorn?”
He asked, his voice quiet, but loud enough for her to hear amidst her loud breathing. His hand reached to her back, hoping to comfort her in any small way he could. He glanced at his hand. Why was it shaking? No wait. That was Thorn shaking.
Fone looked from his hand and back to her, worry washing over his whole face. Thorn gripped her leg even more intensely and said in a pained voice,
“It still hurts…”
Fone briefly wondered what she meant as he turned his attention to her leg. And it finally dawned on him. It was her left leg. The one Kingdok had sliced open.
It had been a few months since the war ended, and it was still very fresh in everyone’s mind. Everyone Fone knew was dealing with some sort of emotional trouble caused by the whole event. And this wasn't the first time Thorn needed some emotional support from her Bone over this new trauma, but this was the first time he’d known it had something to do with the scar Kingdok left her.
Fone’s heart dropped even further but he knew he had to do something. This required more than just a tight hug. He immediately wrapped one of his arms around her from behind and soothingly grabbed her hand with his. He began to slowly trace wide circles on her back and whisper sweet nothings close to her ear, reassuring her that he was here for her, the war is over, and that everything was fine now.
It took a few minutes, but her breathing began to slow down a bit thankfully. Fone knew of another way he could calm her even more. He gently parted the side of her hair, and with her cheek in view, began to place many delicate kisses on her face. Her breathing jumped for a moment, in surprise of Fone’s actions. But it then began to slow down in response to his affections. He made his way downwards, lovingly kissing her neck and shoulder as well. He lifted her shaking hand to his mouth and kissed it tenderly, hoping it would make an easing distraction.
Thorn slowly let go of her leg and relaxed her body. She began to turn to Fone, making him stop and fear for a split second that he made the wrong move. She gazed at him and sighed softly, with a tired but thankful expression. Fone loosened up, thankful to see her looking much better. Thorn placed her hand on his cheek, and closed her eyes as she kissed the tip of his nose warmly. Fone melted in her hand and stared dreamily up to her, placing his hand on her own.
She let go of his head and fell back onto the bed. Thorn’s head sank into the pillow and she smiled, relaxed. Fone lovingly watched her as he sat up on his elbows. He joined Thorn and laid facing her, pulling the covers over them both as he kept his eyes to his love.
“Thank you, Fone Bone.” She said, staring into his eyes.
Fone Bone simply nodded and responded,
“Of course, Thorn. Anytime.”
Thorn peacefully closed her eyes and pulled Fone closer. Fone Bone wrapped his arms around her as well and smiled, content and relieved.
“I love you, Thorn.”
Thorn’s smile widened sweetly.
“I love you too, Fone Bone.”
