“Papa.”
...
“Papaaaaa.”
...
“PAPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.”
Kenma poked his head out from under the sheets to see a miniature, carbon copy of Tetsurou sitting on him. He had the same wild, dark hair, bright golden eyes, unreasonably tall for a five year old, and loud just like his father. Kenma pushed himself up to a sitting position as Reo beamed back at him and raised his arms in victory.
“Dad said to wake you up, breakfast is almost done.”
“Mmm...” Kenma let out a yawn as he went to wrap his arms around his son, then let his body slump forward, “five more minutes.”
“No more minutes!” Reo tried to wriggle out of Kenma’s grasp, but his father just squeezed him tighter, “Dad is making your favorite.”
“Bribing me I see,” Kenma murmured, giving one last squeeze to his son before letting him go, “fine, I’ll be down in a bit.”
“I’m going to count to one hundred and if you’re still in bed, I’m going to drag you out by your feet,” Reo firmly nodded before hopping off of the bed and heading towards the door, “I’m starting now, one!”
Kenma grabbed a pair of sweats off the floor as he could still hear Reo’s countdown as his son went off down the hallway. He then picked up one of the green polka dot scrunchies on the nightstand to tie his hair back into a loose bun. He left his phone behind as he did his usual bathroom routine and finally headed off to join the rest of his family downstairs.
“That’s mine,” Kenma stopped in front of the television to see a different child sitting on the couch with her tiger plushie in her lap. It was much easier to tell the twins apart now that they’d been growing into their own little individualistic humans, plus her hair was a bit on the tamer side.
“You want it back?” Kenma asked as he brought his hand up to the scrunchie holding his blonde tipped hair together.
Kohana blinked up at him, quiet for a moment before shaking her head, “it makes you look pretty.”
“Not as pretty as you,” Kenma bent over to give her a hug and felt her small arms around his neck, “I’ll be back in a min, have to go bother your dad.”
Kohana nodded as she went to push her other stuffed animals out of the way to reserve a spot on the couch for Kenma. He stepped into the kitchen to see Reo sitting at the counter, playing some game on a tablet as he totally forgot that countdown. Kenma went over to the stove to give his husband’s butt a squeeze and received a wide smile in return.
“Good job, Reo, you get extra bacon,” Tetsurou said as their son hooted in excitement, “good morning, my love~”
“It’s not even nine and you’ve already bribed half the people in this house,” Kenma said, “Koko is the only one smart enough not to fall for your schemes.”
“How do you know she rejected me?” Tetsurou asked as Kenma held him from behind.
“You’re terrible with women.”
“I beg to differ, all their heads turn whenever I’m with the twins,” Tetsurou said, “they’re all like, oh Tetsu-chan what beautiful babies you have, oh you’re such a good father, oh my god I wish you were my baby daddy.”
“Every day I grow closer to becoming a single dad,” Kenma left Tetsurou to whine in the kitchen with Reo, going off to the living room to plop down on the couch next to Kohana. A tiger plush was soon placed in his lap and his right arm taken hostage as she held it while they watched one of her favorite kids shows playing on the television. He never would’ve predicted that this was what his Saturday morning would be like if you asked him back in college.
If anything he’d laugh in your face at the mere mention of having kids.
Kenma and Tetsurou started dating a couple months after his twenty-first birthday after years of dancing around the bush and Kenma proposed on their fifth year anniversary because he could never see himself with someone else... and calling Tetsurou his husband would be pretty hot. They went back and forth about kids for years, they already had three cats, why did they need to add little humans to their list of lifetime commitments? Kenma could see just how badly Tetsurou wanted one of his own and knew his husband would be a great father, what Kenma was mostly worried about was himself... he did not deal well with children.
There wasn’t a long conversation or an argument that spawned from frustration, it was simply the sight of Tetsurou mentoring their old high school team that tugged at Kenma’s heartstrings. They visited Nekoma together since Tetsurou wanted to scout for any interesting talent and Kenma was feeling somewhat nostalgic. The teenagers were eager to take any advice from Tetsurou and even poor Kenma got hounded for any setting tips.
It was on the ride home that Kenma said they could have at least one kid and Tetsurou damn near drove them off the road. After another year of researching and deciding on surrogacy, Kenma was still nervous about becoming a parent, although Tetsurou’s enthusiasm was dangerously infectious. It did help that their closest friends, Keiji and Koutarou, were going through the same process and Keiji was also fairly unsure about this, but he did want kids more than Kenma.
Dread filled Kenma as they were given the news about twins, but he instantly shot down any suggestion of aborting or only choosing one after they were born. Tetsurou was even more pleased since they got a sibling while Kenma had to add buying two of everything to future costs. Their bank account was more than ready for any extra additions to their family, but Kenma still put in more time for streaming and his company to make sure their kids would never go without.
It may sound cliche, but Kenma felt all his stress and worries disappear as he laid his eyes on Reo and Kohana, all swaddled up and looking like pudgy burritos. Tetsurou cried, their parents cried, Kenma was just fine right up until one of the nurses placed his son in his arms and their daughter in his husband's. Maybe he could do this after all, maybe everything would be okay and he wouldn’t fuck this up.
“Breakfast is ready!”
The weekends were always reserved for his family with absolutely no talk of work allowed for either of the husbands. Kenma was the one who was home most often just due to his streaming career, but they’d hired a nanny to take care of the twins when he was working and Tetsurou could often be in the office late. Fortunately the twins had started kindergarten just a month ago and that relieved some of the load, yet at the same time Kenma often missed them.
There was no winning here.
“Are you two ready for today?” Tetsurou asked as they were gathered around the table with the twins sitting across from them.
“We’re going to the park,” Reo cheerfully replied, “and we’re going to see our uncles!”
“That’s right,” Tetsurou said, “Tooru and Hajime will be coming too, so we’ll get to meet Ryuu.”
The Akaashi’s were very present in their lives, living just a few blocks away while the Oikawa’s were in Miyagi and came out to Tokyo once every couple of months. Tetsurou got to know Hajime through the national team and that came with Tooru getting close to Kenma and Keiji. They last all saw each other after the new year, so it’d be nice for them to catch up with whatever gossip Tooru had from being around the local wine moms.
Kenma was quiet during their breakfast as Reo and Tetsurou talked about everything they wanted to do at the park while Kohana seemed content just listening as well. The twin put their dishes in the sink once they were done and went off to go bathe and dressed for their park adventures. Kenma knew he should go shower too, but he’d much rather crawl back to sleep, like when was the last time he was allowed to sleep in on the weekend?
“Wanna shower together?” Tetsurou asked with that trademark smirk that still had Kenma’s stomach flip after all these years of them being wed. Kenma pushed himself out of his chair, stepping over one of their cats loafed up on the floor as his husband draped his arms over his shoulders. He felt those warm lips peck at his pierced ear and turned his head to give Tetsurou a soft kiss on the lips, weekends really went from binging video games alone to spending quality time with his family... how domestic.
...
The moment they crossed the street, Reo shot out from Tetsurou’s grasp to run straight towards the table where Keiji, Kotarou, and their two sons, Sora and Minoru, were. Kohana kept hold of Kenma’s hand as they walked over to join the couple and so far the park was somewhat quiet, but there were still a couple hours until noon. Tooru and Hajime were still on their way just thanks to traffic and Kenma took the short window of time to log into all his games since he’d been too occupied all morning.
“Papa, let’s go play!”
Kenma looked over to his husband who had already wandered off to go put up the volleyball net with Koutarou, having their two future volleyball stars in tow. Much to their shared surprise, Kohana was far more interested in athletics than her brother who seemed to follow after Kenma when it came to sedentary hobbies. Sora was extremely excitable like a younger Koutarou and sometimes that led to Kohana getting too overwhelmed by his boundless energy, but hopefully they’d be okay today.
Reo seemed intent on making his father be physically active today as they went from the swings to the jungle gym to the slides with Keiji and Minoru tagging along, or well Keiji trying to keep his son from running off anyway. He’d just learned how to master walking and if you took your eyes off him for even a second, he’d be dashing off towards something that interested his toddler brain. The amount of times Tetsurou had to ask where Reo was when Kenma was supposed to be watching the twins was off the charts because Kohana usually stayed put when they were at that stage of life.
The Oikawa’s arrived just as Reo pushed his father down the slide and finally Kenma had a moment to sit down for longer than five minutes. Tooru and Hajime had adopted three children, Kaori, Aoi, and their newest edition, Ryuu, that everyone was excited to welcome to their extended family. With everyone here it was time for lunch made by yours truly because Tetsurou reminded Kenma it was his turn and he’d skipped out the last three times, and no, a blowjob wasn’t going to get him out of lunch duty again.
Kenma didn’t mind cooking, it was just easier to order in or wait for his husband to do it, but whatever he recruited the twins help for making all these bentos while Tetsurou packed their other things. The kids occupied the table besides the adults as Reo helped Kenma with passing out all the bentos before plopping down next to his sister to eat. Kenma may have tuned out the conversation to play something on his phone, they were just going on about current events, gossiping, and not-so-subtly bragging about their kids achievements, which Tetsurou was not immune to whatsoever.
This somehow led to a three vs three with Tetsurou, Koutarou, and Kohana on one side with Tooru, Kaori, and Sora on the other. Hajime was the referee while Kenma and Keiji wondered how in the world this could be considered a fair match, but Tooru was convinced he could beat the pair even with kids so... here we were. Meanwhile Reo and Aoi were drawing on the sidewalk with chalk and ignoring the feuding adults, as they should be.
The weather warmed as the afternoon came upon them and their totally intense game was put to a pause as they went over to the ice cream truck parked on the side of the road. Tetsurou sat down next to his husband with a popsicle in hand, grumbling about how they were definitely going to win that set and Kenma just nodded along while biting into his strawberry flavoured popsicle. Reo had gone to show off his sidewalk drawings to his sister before they sat down by the sandbox with the other kids and Tetsurou pulled out his phone just in time to record the cute exchange.
“I sense trouble,” Tooru said as they all caught sight of a group of slighter older kids, probably around Kaori’s age, making their way towards the sandbox, “who do they belong to?”
“No clue, don’t think I’ve ever seen their parents around here,” Keiji replied, “but they haven’t bothered us yet.”
“Not everyone is a troublemaker like you, Tooru,” Hajime said, “some people want to make friends instead of instigating someone they meet within five minutes.”
“That’s boring, Iwa-chan,” Tooru replied as his husband just rolled his eyes in response.
Kenma just bit down on his popsicle again as he watched the kids talk, they’d come to the park often enough to have more than a few neighborhood kids as friends, but these kids usually did their own thing.
None of the adults could hear what their conversation was from here, but the ‘leader’ of them must’ve said something that had Sora rising to his feet with Reo quickly getting between them. Kenma settled a firm hand on Tetsurou’s thigh as he could already feel his husband getting up to move, but they couldn’t coddle their children forever, they had to learn how to solve problems on their own. All their attention was drawn to whatever argument the kids were having now as both the leader and Sora were getting rather huffy with each other as Reo seemed to be trying his best to de-escalate.
At least until said leader shoved Reo down onto the ground.
It all seemed to happen so fast as Kohana grabbed her plastic shovel and went to town on this kid while his two friends were stunned, they did not seem to expect the quiet girl to go feral on him. Sora and Kaori took this as a sign to jump in too and okay, well now the adults had to step in before someone got seriously hurt... and by that, Kenma just watched as Tetsurou, Koutarou, and Tooru dealt with breaking them apart. The older children ran off as the others came back to their table, explaining that the older ones claimed that the sandbox was theirs and they needed to pay or go away.
“They hit Reo, so I hit them back,” Kohana said without a trace of regret in her voice.
“Good job on protecting your brother, I’m very proud of you,” Kenma patted Kohana’s head as Tetsurou furrowed his eyebrows at him, “... but next time you should use your words, or walk away before it goes to that point.”
“It’s their fault,” Kohana pouted.
“I know,” Kenma pulled her in closer to drop his tone to a whisper, “you gave ‘em a good walloping, I’m sure they’ll be too scared to mess with you now.”
Kohana smiled back at him, giving her father a hug as he knew that Tetsurou was definitely going to nag at him later about what he told her. Fortunately no one got hurt and Reo bounced back from it all pretty quickly, wanting to go back to playing as Kohana stuck noticeably closer to her brother. The rest of the afternoon went off without a hitch as Kenma was forced to join in for a few volleyball games and both of the twins were amazed to watch him set for their father.
Maybe he was a little motivated by them.
...
Their next destination was a surprise for the kids as they likely assumed they’d just be playing at the park all day, but nope. They shuffled the little ones off into Tooru and Hajime’s van while Tetsurou and Kenma rode with the Akaashi’s to the place that Kenma had honestly neglected after graduating from university. He’d even forgotten this place could be fun and not just used to cram for exams or avoid his loud neighbors at the time.
But before they could go inside, they had a bit of a fire to put out in the shape of Kohana running over to cling to Tetsurou’s leg as she was crying. Kenma had a feeling this would happen because she’d been overstimulated and spent all day around people, but she still wanted to be close to her brother who wanted to ride with the other kids. Tetsurou squatted down to comfort their daughter who was complaining about how loud and noisy everything was as he held her close, telling her it’d be alright and everything would be okay.
Reo stayed behind to hold her hand even though they were right in front of his favorite place in the entire world -that wasn’t Kenma’s gaming room-, the library. Their son absolutely freaked out when they were given a tour of their elementary school and saw the huge library there filled with tons of books. The twins would be sharing a room until they were at least ten or so, but Kenma was already planning on giving their resident bookworm the best reading space for his future bedroom.
It was clear though that nothing mattered more to their son than his sister and making sure she was okay. Kenma was an only child and Tetsurou had an estranged relationship with his older sister, so it was nice to see they’d done something right when it came to the twins. As fast as Kohana’s mini meltdown came, it left like a breeze in the wind as Tetsurou used a napkin to wipe away her tears and Reo tugged her off into the library.
God ... Kenma loved them.
They rejoined others in the kids section of the library and as predicted, Reo was scouring for any new novels while Kohana was drawn to the big picture books, taking three out to bring to Kenma. They found a big, unoccupied bean bag to sit in that was next to Koutarou with Minoru snoozing away in his lap and Kenma plopped down in it, Kohana soon seating herself in his lap. She opened up one of the books filled with marine animals as Koutarou scooted his bean bag closer and both adults pointed out the various sea creatures.
“This is disgustingly cute.”
“Isn’t it? Although it’s the only time that Min stays still so we shouldn’t spoil it.”
Kenma looked up to see that Keiji was holding up his phone and definitely snapping a picture of them, “Koko would make murder look cute.”
“Honestly wouldn’t put it past her,” Tooru replied, “I’d help her bury all the bodies too, free of charge.”
“Let’s not put any ideas into her head,” Keiji said as Koutarou looked over at him, “Sora is with Tetsu and Hajime... probably.”
“Got it,” Koutarou gave him a thumbs up as the other two men came to join them in their corner, taking chairs from a nearby table. Kohana switched to another book with jungle animals and Kenma helped her read them out, her mood was totally relaxed now as compared to earlier. He went through the same thing when he was little and it took his parents some time to figure out how to deal with his anxiety, it was something he worried about when she started school too.
They were nearly done with the third book, everyone had their opinion on each and every desert animal, when Reo, Aoi, Kaori, and Sora popped up from around the corner, claiming they found their group hiding. They all had several books they wanted to check out and ran off to the counter while Tetsurou and Hajime -carrying a sleeping Ryuu on his chest- trailed after them. It was obvious that Kohana was feeling tired too from how she clearly didn’t want to leave Kenma’s lap, but he promised her they’d be going home after this and she could nap soon.
They picked out a few other picture books that interested her before going off to the counter to check them out, then Koutarou invited them all over for dinner. Kenma passed on it in favor of just taking Kohana home and Tetsurou said he’d bring them both something back.
Once they were dropped off back at home, Kenma set Reo’s stack of books on his bed, then went to go feed the cats and took one peek at his work phone to make sure he hadn’t missed anything important. He’d queued up a video to upload this afternoon and there were a rash of comments and such, but he’d get to that later, otherwise there was nothing else calling his immediate attention. Kohana had grabbed her blanket and her tiger plush to lay down on the couch in the gaming room and Kenma softly smiled as he saw her waiting on him.
Her feet rested on his lap as he wondered what to unwind with, there were a few games in his backlog that he’d yet to touch and went with three houses since he still needed to finish the golden deer route. Much like Kohana, he’d had enough socializing for the day, but the house felt empty and quiet without his husband and their son around. He hoped they wouldn’t come back too late...
Ugh, when did he get so clingy?
...
It was a little after eight when his two boys came home and Kohana was grumpy because she was hungry, but the sight of a plate set in front of her put her mood at ease. Reo asked if they were doing anything tomorrow and when his parents answered probably not, Reo immediately ran up to Kenma and proclaimed they would be playing video games all day. Kenma had no opposition to this as he patted Reo’s head and told him to get ready for bed so he could wake up bright and early to be no-lifers tomorrow.
The twins were both cuddled up in Reo’s bed as Tetsurou read them a bedtime story, Reo picked from one of the books he’d gotten at the library and Kenma briefly watched from the doorway as his husband was going on with one of his silly voices. This nightly ritual was one of Tetsurou’s pure joys in life and he was always somewhat down when work kept him past their bedtime because this was supposed to be their time. It’d only be a matter of years before they were too old for bedtime stories and in Tetsurou’s dramatic words, push him away as teenagers and never want to hang out with their lame dad again.
So obviously he had to capitalize on their time and love now.
Kenma left for their bedroom although the night was still very much young, but he really couldn’t remember the last time he pulled an all-nighter that wasn’t related to streaming or editing videos. He’d lived his whole life as a night owl, then he had to be a responsible adult who kept his twin's lives on a schedule and that meant dwelling in the daylight, terrible. Kenma stopped by the hamper to yoink Tetsurou’s dirty shirt that he changed out of after getting back home and replacing his own with it, loving just how Tetsurou it smelled like.
Some old habits never changed.
Kenma was scrolling through social media on his laptop as his husband came in about half an hour later, he spent most of that time catching up on dumb drama from a fellow streamer. Tetsurou joined him in bed after stripping down to his boxers and grabbed his phone to presumably check his emails and such, teasing his husband about still having a thing for his sweaty clothes. Kenma didn’t deny it, adding that at least Tetsurou didn’t walk in on him sniffing his underwear, again, and his husband just did that obnoxious hyena laugh that’d probably wake up the twins if they weren’t so used to it.
“So Kohana...” Tetsurou said as he’d calmed down, “I didn’t really expect that out of her.”
“Really? I’ve lost track of how often she’s hit Sora because he made Reo cry, or how she shoved that one kid at school for making fun of him, or that time she hid Reo’s switch for a week because he got stuck on a game and cried,” Kenma said, “she’s very protective of him.”
“I know, I just choose to ignore my little girl becoming so violent over him,” Tetsurou pouted as Kenma just chuckled, “and you shouldn’t be encouraging it.”
“That kid was an asshole and deserved it,” Kenma replied, “don’t act like you wouldn’t have done the same thing.”
“I have done the same exact thing,” Tetsurou said, “but still, I don’t want her punching the wrong person and getting into more trouble.”
“Baby do you forget how rich we are? We have fuck you money, Koko could get away with anything,” Kenma smirked as Tetsurou pinched at the bridge of his nose, “if it bothers you that much then maybe we should enroll her in some martial arts class so she can better learn self control, hm?”
“That’s... not a half bad idea,” Tetsurou said as he tapped on his phone, “imagine our baby getting a black belt in kicking ass, oh I’m so hype.”
“She will become an efficient killer and I won’t have to pay for an assassin anymore,” Kenma replied.
“Koko will not be used for killing off random youtubers, Kenma,” Tetsurou said as he brought his phone over to him, “I could go check this one out with her on Monday.”
“What you don’t know won’t hurt you, darling,” Kenma gave a quick skim over the website, “looks okay, maybe you should ask our friends if they have any recs.”
“Mmm... I’ll do that,” Tetsurou opened up one of their group chats and sent out a message, “and now it’s time for my favorite kitten.”
Kenma’s laptop was taken from him before he could say anything, followed by his light frame being easily pulled onto his husband’s lap. A large hand was on his neck while another was placed on his hip, quickly slipping downwards to squeeze at his plump ass as they kissed. Their sex life had a huge rebound since the twins were able to sleep through the night now and didn’t require as much attention as they did just a couple years ago.
Kenma had the faintest fear that one day Tetsurou would get bored of him, or maybe Kenma would lose interest, or they’d just end up growing apart, growing out of each other. There was a period during their engagement where work consumed both of their lives and they barely had time to see each other, even living under the same roof it was rare for them to have an actual conversation. Kenma hated this dark time in their life, there were so many doubts and worries and stupid fucking invasive thoughts that plagued his mind, he didn’t want their marriage to be this, to just be... strangers.
When Tetsurou awoke to get ready for work, Kenma refused to let him go, it was borderline childish and definitely pathetic on some level... but he was so tired of watching Tetsurou’s back as he left. The sight of Kenma’s tears rolling down his cheeks seemed to be the breaker as his fiancé wrapped his strong arms around him and wound up calling in sick after he took good care of his Kenma. It took some time, but they did find a way to make things work, to squeeze in dates and movie nights and special fiancé time where they were just content vibing with each other.
Years passed since then and Kenma was still so easy for his husband’s touch, craved those long, skilled fingers stretching him out, keened for Tetsurou’s tongue on his warm skin, hungered to be stuffed full by the love of his life. They were the experts of each other’s bodies and had done countless things in (and out) of the bedroom, yet all Kenma desired was to be close to his husband, to feel him, to taste him, to see how Tetsurou looked up at him with so much love and adoration in his eyes. At the end of each and every day, even if they fought, they would always have each other... Kenma had the man by his side who took his last name seven years ago.
His Kozume Tetsurou.
