Chapter Text
Living in a world of heroes and villains, you would think every child out there wants to be a hero. Everyone but me that is. At first, I was like everyone else.
My quirk gives me the ability to summon golden chains that respond to my call. They were extremely flashy and exceedingly powerful. Everyone kept praising me and telling me that I would be a great hero. For a short while, I just accepted it as any child really would and glowed whenever I was praised.
Then the visions came. In my first dream, I saw some weird tentacle villain rampaging the streets. In the dream, I was looking at the villain from some building next door holding onto my father’s hand and absolutely captivated by the fight. When I saw Endeavor swoop in to apprehend the villain, I was ecstatic. He flared up with his signature move Flashfire Fist and began lobbing powerful flames at the villain.
I don’t remember the exact series of events that happened afterwards but somehow the villain managed to deflect one of the balls of flame towards where I was with my father. I remember screaming. I remember the feeling of my dad turning me around and trying to protect me in his embrace. I remember hearing glass breaking and my father screaming. I think I was screaming too but it doesn’t matter anymore. Then everything was black.
It was a weird dream. It felt real, almost as if I was there. By the time I woke up, I was kicking and screaming and my father was comforting me and holding me in his arms.
He was embracing me and reassured me that everything was fine. “Don’t worry,” he cooed, “papa’s here. It’s just a bad dream.”
I remember hugging him back and crying while holding him tight. It was a whole 10 minutes before I started calming down. By that time, my face was a sniveling mess with snot dripping down my nose, tears rolling down my cheeks, and eyes both red and puffy from crying.
“Want to talk about it?” my father asked me. I opened my mouth to reply, to tell him about that awful dream, of that villain with the tentacles and that fireball that came flying towards him, but nothing would come out. I tried forming words to say, but nothing would work. I was getting frustrated and it was showing.
My father was gentle, telling me to take my time, but no matter what happened, I couldn’t tell him about my dream. I gave up on telling him and instead opted to just say “papa’s the best papa ever” and buried myself into his chest.
My father laughed and hugged me back. After that, it was a simple affair. My father helped clean me up and changed my clothes. We headed down to the dining room where my mother was preparing a simple breakfast of steamed rice with some miso soup and grilled fish.
By this point, I had all but forgotten about that weird dream. I was instead contently chewing my mother’s cooking. The day went by as normal with my father taking me out for a dentist visit. We were in the waiting room of the doctor’s office and I was sitting by the window playing with my All Might figurine.
Then it happened, I saw some villain with tentacles rampaging on the street. “Papa, papa look! A villain!” I jumped up and down excitedly yelling for my father to look. He just chuckled and came over to my side by the window and held onto my hand.
Then Endeavor hopped in and engaged the villain with his signature move, and that’s when I remembered about my dream. Of the flames that will come our way. My eyes widened and I turned towards my father to warn him. “Papa we need to —.”
I never got to finish. My father’s eyes widened when he saw the flames coming our way. Just like in the dream he turned around and flipped me to be in front of him while shielding me with his body. I tried to call upon my chains to protect him too, but nothing happened. I couldn’t manifest my chains. Just like in my dreams I heard him screaming. I remember feeling a searing pain and then I blacked out.
When I woke up, I found myself in bed. There were bandages wrapped around both of my arms and my mom was by the door talking with a doctor. I remember looking up to my mother and asking “mama, where’s papa?”
My mother looked at me with eyes stricken with grief while the doctors looked away. The day after that was a blur. I remember hearing the news that my father died. I remembered crying. I remembered Endeavor coming in and giving a formal apology for inadvertently killing my father.
On that day I was 7 years old. On that day I lost my father. It was my fault he died. I was the one that called him over when I saw the villain attack. I was the one who dreamt about the villain. I could’ve protected him if I could have just used my quirk.
In my grief, I didn’t notice one thing. In my dreams, I never turned around to warn my father of the incoming attack, and that is what makes the world of a difference.
