‘I’m into you, and girl, no one else would do.’

.

Hey, pal! How have you been? You must have traveled far and wide since we last saw each other, right? For me, I can only seek out some entertainment for myself. These past couple of days, I've used a work opportunity to explore Dragonspine and seek out some local specialties. I hope they will be of use to you. The harsh cold of the snow-capped mountains is reminiscent to the scenery of my hometown... Sigh, I've had many mundane days that makes me nostalgic of our time together. Whether it's a fight or a challenge, I always feel that having you around is what makes life really interesting. Haha, to be honest, I've been planning a special day to meet up with you, today could be that chance! If you have no special plans, how about you swing by my place?

-Tartaglia.

“So, who’s it from?”

Paimon asked, floating over Lumine’s head as she tried to catch a glimpse of the name signed at the bottom of the letter. They were both resting underneath a tree nearby Cider Lake, where they could look over at the city. Soon enough, they would make their way to the Adventurer’s Guild in Mondstadt to check out what commissions she had to do for the day.

Lumine’s lips were stretched into a soft smile when she read about how the Harbinger was feeling nostalgic over his homeland, and how he wanted to meet her. She couldn’t help but feel her heart flutter at how he thought about her…even if it’s through fighting or challenges.

“It’s from Tartaglia,” she replied to Paimon, her eyes not leaving the letter.

“Tartaglia?! You mean Mr. More-Money-Than-Sense?!” Paimon blanched, eyes blinking a few times as she tried to recover from her shock. “What does he want?!” This time, she shoved her head over Lumine’s shoulder and read through the letter.

Lumine sighed, glancing at her floating companion. “Are you ever going to stop calling him that? You do realize he buys you a lot of tasty meals. Besides, you can simply call him Childe; you’ve done that a few times already.”

Paimon huffed indignantly, and crossed her arms. “Well, after everything he did, he owes us that.”

Lumine giggled at her, and put the letter away, then picked up the package that sat next to her, and unraveled it. Childe had sent her a few pieces of starsilver, some chilled meat, and something else that was wrapped up and…warm. There was a note as well, which read, ‘A Prize Catch.’

Well, he did mention that there was something that would be useful for her somewhere in his letter. Unable to contain her curiosity further, she opened up the little bundle and an exotic scent wafted in the air. He sent her some sort of soup that smelled like seafood, and its color was an unusual blood red.

Paimon then picked up the note and read the contents out loud:

“This is my specialty; I made it in a way where it looks like a beast is trapped in an ocean of blood, its death throes an inaudible scream…But don’t worry! I managed to fish this out of the sea and added some contents from my homeland that I’m sure you would like! I hope you enjoy it!”

“Ocean of blood…?! Archons! What is he into?!” Paimon shuddered. “Still…it does smell good…”

Lumine didn’t even flinch at those words; instead, she was rather amused. Typical Childe, was all she could think. Even food had to be related to murder and death. Ah well.

“He did invite us to visit him. He’s currently in Dragonspine,” she told her companion.

“You’re not really thinking of going there, are you?” Paimon asked, brows furrowing in disapproval.

“Why not?”

“Why not?! First of all, it’s too cold! Paimon does not want to deal with that! Second of all, it’s Childe! He may…buy us lunch and dinner…but he’s a no-good Fatui! Who knows what he’s up to!”

Lumine leaned her head back against the trunk of the tree and looked up at the azure sky. No, she did not forget what he did, but they did eventually make amends later on; ever since his younger brother stopped by, she managed to see a whole different side of Childe. It allowed them to settle their differences aside, and the awkwardness between them dissipated after they agreed to spar on a weekly basis. Throughout those challenges and battles, they eventually formed a bond that allowed them to be comfortable and (to some extent), trust each other. It was way different than when they first met. Their friendship was certainly an unusual one, but it was one of her best ones nonetheless.

Also…Fatui Harbinger or not…she didn’t even care anymore…Caring about who he served made no difference in her life – it only drove her further away from the purpose she wanted to accomplish: finding Aether once again. Ever since their brief reunion…she decided that everything else was meaningless…The only purpose that mattered to her was Aether’s – and in the end, all she wanted was to go home with her precious twin brother, and that’s it. It didn’t matter if she was the Hero of Liyue, or an Honorary Knight – none of that made a difference to her. There was only one thing she wanted.

“It doesn’t matter anymore. He is still a good friend.” she replied solemnly. “It’s not my place to get involved in what the Fatui are doing – or whatever political purpose other nations have. I just want to go home…with Aether.”

Paimon only fell silent, and stared at the traveler with sad eyes. She reached over and placed her small hand on Lumine’s shoulder, who looked over at her.

“And we will. Paimon promises that.”

Lumine smiled warmly at her guide, and acknowledged the hand on her shoulder with her own.

“Come on! Let’s go finish up those commissions!” Paimon exclaimed, until her tummy made a rumbling sound. “Uhh…maybe after some food…”

Lumine simply shook her head and scooped some of the soup that she got from Childe into a bowl for them to both try, and it turned out to be delicious; a perfect mix of herbs and seafood. Paimon could not contain herself from humming at the taste, and patted her stomach happily when she finished her meal.

“Wow! Paimon didn’t think it’d be that good!”

“Me too, actually. That was a really good meal.”

After they packed their things, Lumine stretched her muscles and walked a few steps forward.

“Come on Paimon, let’s go see what we’ve got today.”

“Yeah!”

At the Adventurer’s Guild, Lumine and Paimon looked over the commissions that they had and it turns out that one of the requests was located in Dragonspine; it was about helping out an adventurer named Tommy, who was struggling to complete a commission of his own.

“What a coincidence; a commission in Dragonspine,” Paimon sighed. She really did not want to deal with handling the sheer cold over there.

Lumine had managed to finish the rest of the requests in a breeze, and all that’s left was the one that would send her to Mondstadt’s frozen city.

“Relax, Paimon. We’ll get it done as soon as we can, and then rest at a camp.”

“Fine…let’s go then!”

In a Fatui camp at the Snow-Covered Path, Childe was sitting on top of a rock with his cheek leaning against his palm in a daze, staring at the white sheets of snow. He had finished his work for the day, so he didn’t have much to do other than rest, fish, or just explore around. At the moment though, he didn’t feel like doing any of those. Truth be told, there was a certain someone occupying his mind – a certain traveler he had been aching to see. His body was calling out for another challenge, another exercise that he could not seem to obtain anywhere without…her.

Childe let out a sigh, a cloud of his breath exhaled from his mouth as he stared at the misty bluish-grey hue of the sky. Snezhnaya… when was the last time he’d been there? The skies were just like the ones of his hometown. He sure wished he could go back there and relive the moments he is already missing with his family. He wished he could touch the snow over there again, and feel the cold, crystalline ice in his hands. He wished he could go there…with her.

When did everything suddenly become about her? He really didn’t understand why he was so intrigued with the traveler. Sure, they were close friends now – but he thought that it would only be a friendship based on sparring and helping him become stronger; helping him become the most powerful fighter. Next thing he knew, he was always around her when she was around, even outside of sparring. Next thing he knew, every time he caught wind of her presence in Liyue, he would try to get his work done faster, either by finishing whatever he had left in a breeze, or reassigning it to Ekaterina.

He was drawn to her in a way he couldn’t explain… he never met anyone like that before; someone who had the same zeal for battle, someone who was so kind and caring, giving pieces of herself for others, someone who accepted him – a person who had so many flaws and imperfections, a person who was dangerous and manipulative; someone that a normal individual would stay away from. Yet Lumine cared nothing for all that, and instead gave him a second chance. In that second chance, he felt like he can truly be himself with her, to the point where he wanted to experience every moment he can with this unusual outlander who walked into his life.

And that’s why he sent her that letter and package of starsilver, frozen meat and his little specialty. It was his small attempt to share a part of himself - a part of his time with her.

Then suddenly, Childe remembered that he also invited her to see him here, in Dragonspine. He wondered, would she actually go? Would it be possible that she would be around for his ‘special day’?

‘She didn’t write back, though,’ an intrusive thought popped up in his mind, causing him to tense.

‘She probably has things to do. Maybe I was a little too personal?’  Childe then frowned, pressing his lips together. Where were all these thoughts coming from? All because he didn’t receive a mere reply from her…

‘She probably doesn’t care enough—’ That’s it. Childe had enough. He wasn’t going to let himself spiral into a vortex of overthinking. He immediately stood up, wiped some snow off of his pants, and made his way upwards along the path. Some exploring should clear his mind.

He was somewhere between Wyrmrest Valley and the Entombed City-Ancient Palace, when he heard a sinister voice call out, “I’ll put you on high heat.”

It was one of his men. The voice was followed by an all too familiar shout of “Wind Blade!”, the sound of sword slashing and clanging, and loud blasts echoing in the distance.

Could it be?

Childe immediately picked up his pace, dashing forward. He felt a certain excitement rushing through him, the toll of battle sending a burst of adrenaline that coursed in his veins as he ran towards the sound of the voice he had missed so much. Eventually, he reached where the voices took him, and he stopped in his tracks.

There she was.

That well-known blonde hair that reminded him of the sun, those shimmering golden eyes; that peculiar, white outfit with exotic accents that made her look like an angel of war, and that battle cry that was like music to his ears.

The traveler was here, in Dragonspine.

Several shots were fired, and Lumine immediately jumped to the side to dodge the incoming blasts, then dashed forward, summoning wind into her palms to throw her Wind Blade at the Pyroslinger Bracer. But then, the Electrohammer Vanguard slammed his large hammer directly towards her, and Lumine barely missed, leaping out of the way as he swung his weapon. It didn’t help that the Cryogunner was swaying his gun in every direction, blasting out a gust of ice towards her.

That was when Tartaglia nocked an arrow, aimed, and shot his Riptide that split-splashed around the skirmishers, the whirling waters gashing at them. They groaned in pain, and Lumine’s eyes widened in shock. She looked around to see who interrupted her fight, when suddenly, the skirmishers assumed a kneeling position, their heads bowed low.

“Greetings, soldiers.”

“Greetings, Sir Tartaglia!”

Lumine gasped, her head whipped around to see his figure standing by a boulder. Their eyes met, and Childe could not help but flash her a smirk and a salute with his fingers.

“Hey there, girlie. Long time no see,”

“Tartaglia,” Lumine greeted with a nod and a warm smile. Childe immediately leaped downwards, and landed in front of the skirmishers. He feigned brushing off dirt from his grey jacket as he stood by casually.

“I thought my men by now would be at least be aware that they are not supposed to cause trouble. Or have you always been this incompetent?”

Childe’s voice may have sounded nonchalant, but there was a menacing tone laced with his words.

“A-Apologies, Sir Tartaglia…”

“Let me make myself clear,” Childe started, his hand resting on his hip. “Anyone who touches a hair on the Traveler will have their heads hanging by a rope.”

Even though that was cruel of him to say, Lumine could not fight back the blush on her cheeks…did he have to be so…so protective like that? She wasn’t sure why, but she liked it. She liked it a lot.

The three skirmishers gulped, and Lumine could see that they were shivering uncontrollably.

“I will not show mercy if any more trouble is stirred. Is that understood?”

“Yes, Master Tartaglia!”

“Good. Now, disperse!”

In no less than a minute, the skirmishers were out of sight, and it was just Childe, Lumine, and of course, her little companion, Paimon.

“Phew! Paimon thought they would never leave us alone!”

Childe let out a chuckle as he walked towards Lumine.

“I’m sorry about that. You guys are not hurt, are you?” His brows furrowed in concern, even though he maintained a smile. His blue orbs raked over Lumine’s figure, searching for any scratch or injury.

His lips twitched into a small smirk when he found none.

Lumine shook her head at his question, and dematerialized her sword. “Nope. They’re not something I can’t handle. We were just looking around for a heating source,”

“And then those No-Good Fatui came and attacked us! Paimon thinks you should control your soldiers a little better! We were not bothering them!” Paimon’s chest puffed as she placed her small hands on his hips angrily.

“Hahahaha! Don’t you worry, my friends. I can assure you that they won’t bother you anymore. Now, how about we head back to my camp and warm up over there? I’ve got a delicious meal heating up in a pot!”

“Did you say, ‘meal’?” Paimon’s eyes glowed and her mouth started to drool.

“You mean that ‘Prize Catch’?” Lumine teased, her eyes glinting with amusement.

Childe’s eyes widened, and he felt a sense of joy spark in his chest. He could not hold back the grin that grew on his lips.

“Ah! So, you did get my letter! Well? Tell me, what did you think? Did you like it?”

Lumine couldn’t help but giggle at his enthusiasm in knowing what she thought about the soup he sent over to her.

“It was delicious. I didn’t think you were a good cook,”

“Ohoho, there are a lot of things you have yet to find out about me, girlie.”

“Oh yeah?” Lumine smirked, “Well then, I look forward to it.”

Childe’s heart skipped a beat. Gosh, she was just so…lovely. No words could explain how happy he was to find her here, in Dragonspine, and now they were going to spend time together; that means he could have more adventure experiences with this special Traveler. He definitely planned to make the best of it.

“Can we p-please hurry?! Paimon is going to f-freeze to death!”

In no time, they made it back to Childe’s camp.

After consuming some warm, hot, flavorsome soup made by Childe, they were all sitting by the fire, stretching out their hands to keep them from getting frostbites. Well, that was only Lumine and Childe, since Paimon returned to her dimension because she was starting to fall asleep thanks to all that food. They were both sitting in a comfortable silence, staring at the orange flames.

Childe then scooted closer to Lumine until their shoulders bumped, causing her to look up at him and arch a brow.

“Body heat helps us get warmer; don’t you think?” He said, flashing her a wink.

Lumine rolled her eyes, hoping he did not notice the pink color of her cheeks. “Whatever you say,”

Childe could only chuckle, and turn away from her. Honestly, there was a question that he was itching to ask, but he wasn’t sure if it would make things awkward, or if it wasn’t that serious to begin with.

He then decided he might as well ask, but he would keep his eyes at the flames before them.

“Hey, Lumine,”

Lumine turned her head to look at him, taken aback by the way he said her name in that soft tone. It made her feel an unfamiliar fuzzy feeling…maybe it was the fire?

“Yes?”

“I want to ask you something.”

“Sure, go ahead.” She nodded.

“Why…didn’t you answer my letter?” He finally asked. Lumine blinked at him, tilting her head to the side. He seemed so unsettled…his smile was tight, his brows were tense, and he didn’t even look at her. She felt every need to relieve him from whatever it was making him look like that.

“I actually received your letter today and opened it,” she started. “It’s not like I didn’t want to respond. I am sorry, though, I didn’t think you were expecting an immediate reply.”

Childe shook his head, “No, no, it’s not that…I just thought…that maybe…” Gosh, did he forget how to talk? What was so hard about this? He could feel her gaze on him, waiting for him to continue. He licked his lips before he finally finished his sentence.

“I just thought that maybe you did not want to come.” He was glancing away, fighting the heat that was creeping up his ears.

Lumine’s eyes widened, surprised that he would actually think that way.

“What? Why would you think I wouldn’t want to come?”

Childe sighed, his hands raking over his orange-brown tufts. “I don’t know—I just thought—” He then exhaled and shook his head. “Ah, you know what, forget it. My bad.” He waved it off and finally turned to look at her with that smile – the same smile he wore when they first met.

She did not like that.

“So, this place is really a lot like Snezhnaya,” he tried to change the subject but Lumine wouldn’t let him.

“Tartaglia,” she started, a displeased look visible in her golden eyes as she frowned at him.

His smile wavered.

“I don’t know what it is that’s gotten you so bothered like that, but I wasn’t planning on declining your invitation to be here.” She sighed, vapor exhaling from her mouth. “I was actually going to finish up my commissions and teleport here to find you; but then, I was faced with a little coincidence where one of my commissions was located here, in Dragonspine.” She then smiled at him, “I was going to write back when I was able to rest, but then I was ambushed, and then you found me instead. Now here we are.”

Child stared at her in shock. A bright, hot blush bridged over his cheeks as he felt that sense of sheer embarrassment over his idiotic way of thinking. He wished he didn’t doubt her like that in the first place. Now his heart was also drumming against his chest when she said that she was planning on seeing him after she cleared her plans for the day. A strange emotion welled up in him; a mix of happiness, satisfaction, and something else he couldn’t put a finger on. All in all, it was a nice feeling.

A happy laughter bubbled out of him, and he leaned back casually, relaxing himself as he rested his weight on the palm of his hands.

“Ah, I’m glad to hear that, comrade. Honestly, thank you. It really means a lot that you wanted to come here to see me.”

“Well, you did mention that you were planning a special day to see me. But what’s so special about today?”

Childe grinned at her. “Well…”

Lumine looked confused. “What?”

“Alright, here’s something I don’t usually tell anyone…it’s actually my birthday.”

Lumine gasped. “What!”

“Yeah!”

She immediately smacked a palm at her forehead, then glared at the Fatui. “You could not have mentioned that in your letter? I did not bring anything with me! Instead, you sent me presents!”

Childe then rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Oh, come on, don’t give me that look! Is it so bad that I wanted to spend some time with you?”

She then faltered, feeling shy at his words. “N-no…it’s not that…It’s just…I mean, still… I would have liked to be prepared.”

“Mmm. I get that, but then again, having you around is a better present for me.”

“Oh, stop it…” She nudged him, unwilling to look at the Harbinger as she fought back a heating blush.

That only earned her a chuckle.

“What! I’m not lying!”

She then huffed, crossing her arms and turning her face away.

The Harbinger then nudged her, smiling at her warmly. ‘So cute…’

“Yield.”

Lumine huffed out, the end of her blade glaring directly at Childe’s face. His ocean blue eyes tracing up the blade and then making contact with Lumine’s shimmery golden ones, panting heavily as sweat trickled down his forehead. He was laying on the cold icy ground, his arms spread out as he caught his breath. A certain thrill coursed in his veins as he grinned up at Lumine; zeal sparkling in his ocean orbs. He let out a chuckle and shook his head in disbelief that once again, he was beaten by this…this outstanding, iridescent, ethereal traveler that walked into his life, and who was once his enemy; this time amongst the harshness of the winter climate. Gosh, if only he could take her to Snezhnaya with him and relive that battle he just had…And gosh, why did she have to always look so charming whenever she defeats him…If only she knew the things that she did to him.

“You beat me again, girlie…Keep this up and you might make me fall in love with you.” He teased, smirking at her as she threw her blade to the side, which then dematerialized. She wasn’t fazed by his flirtatious words, though. She knew he said things like that out of impulse and excitement.

“Very funny.” She replied, then lent her hand to pick him up. Yet as she pulled him, she did not heed the slipperiness of the ground due to the melted snow, and then with a loud yelp, she fell forward, her face landing on his chest while she kneeled in between his legs. Childe groaned out when his back was flat on the ground once again, yet his hands held her hips to stabilize her. Lumine scrambled to get off of his chest, but she did not move to stand up as she looked over at Childe with concern over her face.

“Are you alright?!”

Childe’s eyes glazed over as he stared back at her, his lips parted slightly as he tried to will away the brief dizziness he felt from falling back roughly. He blinked a few times, and then his gaze drifted from her face down to her body, taking in the position that they were in. Her legs were spread apart, knees on his sides, and she was sitting on an area that’s a little lower from his abdomen. Her arms were stretched out so that her hands were pressed against his chest, and this only made her breasts squeeze against each other, accentuating her cleavage…

Damn, she was hot. He had never felt this attracted to someone this much in his whole life; and he had never felt this lucky to have such a gorgeous woman like her sitting on top of him – even if she unaware of the position she was in with him.

Too bad this moment couldn’t last longer.

“Well, it would be nice if you’d get off…unless, you like where you are right now. Not that I mind,” he winked, offering a weak smirk.

Lumine blinked a few times in confusion, then glanced down and noticed that they were indeed in a rather…compromising position.

There weren’t enough braziers to make her feel the heat that was currently crawling up her face, and she immediately broke off from the Harbinger, standing up and brushing the skirt of her dress down. She flashed the Harbinger a glare when she heard him chuckle, and he immediately lifted his hand to wave off what he said as a joke. Well, it was kind of a joke; he really did not mind having her on top of him more often.

She huffed and turned her back to him, “Looks like you can help yourself from here.”

“Aw, come on, girlie, I was just kidding around!” Childe said in between chuckles, moving to stand up as well, and once he did so, Lumine started walking away; and Childe followed after her.

While Childe only seemed to be amused at her pouty face and shyness, Lumine was trying her best to ignore the way her heart was pacing, and how she…liked the way he did not push her off of him…even though he was just acting flirty to rile her up, she did feel a strange sense of enjoyment at how he made her feel so desirable and attractive; and for some reason, she wanted more of that.

She wanted him to make her feel more of that.

Childe and Lumine were taking a stroll towards a lake. Childe told her that he wanted to go grab some food to ration for later on, particularly fish, but when Lumine told him she could just teleport and get some food elsewhere, Child shook his head at her with a smirk that said his intentions was not about finding food somewhere else.

“We’re gonna go ice fishing.”

“Ice fishing? Why?” Lumine asked confusedly.

“O-only someone like you would c-come up with such a terrible i-idea!” Paimon told him, wrapping her arms around herself as she shivered at the intense cold.

“You can stay here at the camp, if you want,” Childe shrugged. He definitely did not mind that the little fairy would stay elsewhere – that only meant more time with him and Lumine.

Lumine also nodded at the idea, and smiled at her companion. “It’s alright, Paimon. You can go ahead and stay warm over there. We’ll be back soon.”

And so, here they were; at a lake that was fairly close to the Entombed City-Ancient Palace. Childe managed to set up a fire for the two of them to warm up against the cold, biting winds that blew by.

“You never told me why you wanted to go ice fishing,” Lumine said.

“Well, here is another fun fact about me; this is one of my hobbies,” he told her as he sliced through the thin ice around the lake.

Lumine’s brows raised in interest. “Ice fishing is your hobby?”

Childe nodded his head, flashing her a smile as he looked at the traveler over his shoulder. “That’s right.”

“It doesn’t look like you do this very often, though.” Lumine told him, watching as he sat down with his fishing line already in the water, waiting for its prey.

“This is what I used to do back at home.” he sighed fondly at the nostalgic feeling. “Ah, this place really takes me back…my father and I always went ice fishing together. This is something I don’t think I can give up. It’s just like training, you see. Ice fishing is not as easy as it looks.”

“Wow,” Lumine breathed out, astounded by the Harbinger’s words. “You must really miss Snezhnaya.”

“Yeah,” his tone was soft…there was a certain sadness in his tone that was very recognizable. “You know what they say, there is no place like home.”

Suddenly, the face of her twin brother flashed in her mind, and Lumine faltered, bowing her head to allow her bangs to cover the sadness that was looming over her eyes.

“Tell me about it...” she whispered.

It did not go unnoticed by Childe, who cursed himself inwardly when he noticed the way the brightness in her shimmering golden eyes turn dim. He was speaking so freely about his home and his family that he did not consider how this might be something sensitive for her.

“Lumine…” He looked at her with concern, “Are you alright?”

When she didn’t respond immediately, he reached out a hand to hold hers, and this elicited a soft gasp as she whipped her head to look at the Harbinger.

The sad look on his face only grew her silence.

“I’m sorry. I did not intend to upset you with what I said,”

Lumine then let out a sigh, and returned a gentle grip onto his hand as she shook her head.

“No…it’s alright. There is no point in dwelling on that right now.” She said with a shrug.

Tartaglia didn’t respond immediately, but her words did not relieve him at all. He knew it was hard for her to talk about her brother sometimes; and it was no secret that she was turning every stone just to find him. Yet still… she seemed a bit off, but he decided not to pry.

“Let’s just change the subject,”

Lumine nodded at him, feeling more relieved at that.

Childe then felt a tug at his fishing rod, and he then smirked. “Ah, would you look at that!”

Lumine looked over curiously as Childe pulled out his rod to reveal their desired prey.

Lumine giggled, clapping her hands as she grinned happily. “Well done,”

Childe placed the fish into the bucket that was beside him, then turned to her.

“This one was fairly quick; but normally it takes a lot of endurance. That’s why it’s like training.”

“I never really thought about it that way, you know. It sure gives a whole new meaning to fishing.”

They managed to catch a few more, and in between those moments, they spoke about a variety of topics. Lumine was mostly intrigued when Childe told her about Snezhnaya, and all the exotic things that she had yet to explore, but made note of. She loved listening to him talk; he always knew how to get her mind off things. His company was always enjoyable; whether it was sparring or just hanging around. He was one of the few people that she felt comfortable being with; regardless of his affiliations. Not everyone was able to make her forget her problems the way Childe did, and for some reason, it drove her closer to him in an unspoken way. The way he looked at her made her heart strangely flutter, and every time he smiled, she felt as though cicins were flittering in her stomach; a pleasant feeling washing through her. She thought she wanted to feel more of that. That odd sense of security with Tartaglia…she wanted to lean on that for as long as she can.

Childe was happily enjoying his time as he spoke to her. He didn’t miss the way she was curiously listening as he talked about his hometown, Zapolyarny Palace, and a little bit about the culture over there. He took in the way her eyes – eyes that shined like sunlight - were gleaming with interest, the way her lips parted as he told her about ice sculptures, ice skating, and certain foods that he would love for her to try.

Childe was completely entranced – he almost forgot that he was a dangerous Harbinger that was sworn to the Tsarista. Ironically, Lumine did not allow that to even be a problem between them. He was simply being himself, and she was the only one who made him act this way. Once again… that strange tingle soared through him; a feeling he could not describe…was it…desire? Yearning? He couldn’t tell.

The two of them ate some Grilled Tiger Fish; and after that, they decided to take a casual stroll along a pathway where they were sure would have plenty of heating sources nearby when the sheer cold starts to claw at them. Actually, it was mostly for Lumine; Childe was already used to the harsh winters of Snezhnaya. He could literally walk around shirtless and the cold would never bother him.

He was teaching her a few Snezhnayan terms, and he listened to her fumble with the words, trying to hold back his laughter.

“Say it again: звезда.

“Zzvizzda.”

Childe could not hold back his laughter anymore; his hand coming up to cover his mouth while the other clutched his stomach. Lumine crossed her arms, pouting as her cheeks burned red in embarrassment.

“I’m sorry- I’m sorry- It’s just…It’s just funny how it’s hard to say such a small word.”

“Hmph! And I don’t get why it’s that complicated,”

“You’re stressing on the wrong part of the word. It’s zvez-da.”

Zvez-da.”

“Very good! Again, звезда.

“звезда.

“You got it, girlie! Great job!”

Lumine beamed at him happily. “Thanks!”

Childe then winked at her and said, “That would be: Спасибо.”

She then absentmindedly muttered the word a few times, trying it on her tongue, making sure she was enunciating the word correctly. Childe could not take her eyes off her, smiling at her fondly as he watched her practice his mother tongue. He felt a sense of pride swell in him, and he felt that he wanted to teach her some more. He thought of how it would be if she managed to communicate in Snezhnayan, or if she managed to speak his language fluently…just the thought of that made him feel so giddy with excitement. She was just too adorable for words…and she looked so beautiful…glowing like the sun, brightening his day with her presence.

мое солнышко.”  He whispered softly, mostly to himself.

“Hm?” Lumine perked up at him. “What did you say?”

He chuckled and shook his head at her. “Nah, nothing.”

“I heard you say something! And it was in Snezhnayan!” She stopped in her tracks, facing him fully. He followed her too.

“Hm,” he decided to tease her a little. “You’re just hearing things,”

“Hey! You’re not being fair, Tartaglia!”

“Oh?” He flashed her a challenging smirk. “Then how about another spar? If you win, I’ll tell you what I said.”

Lumine flared with determination. “You’re on!”

“I thought I knew that voice.”

The two of them turned their heads to the person that alerted them, and Lumine’s eyes widened in recognition.

“Albedo!”

She immediately walked away from Childe to greet the alchemist, who was slowly making his way towards Lumine. They met in the middle, and Lumine held out a hand for him to shake.

He took her hand instantly, returning the gentle handshake. “Long time no see, Traveler. How have you been?”

“I’ve been doing alright. What about you? How are your researches coming along?”

“Not bad; we’re currently researching a foreign plant that came all the way from Inazuma. There is still much to be discovered.”

“Inazuma, huh? That’s interesting, I’m sure Sucrose has lost her sleep trying to analyze whatever information she found,”

Albedo’s lips curved into a small, amused smile. “No surprise there.”

When Lumine left Childe’s side, he suddenly felt a strange...sense of emptiness. He did not like the way the loss of her presence lingered next to him. As he watched the way she excitedly made her way towards the alchemist, a bitter feeling jolted inside him; a strange twist ached at his chest when she stood close to that blonde male. Why were they so familiar with each other? Did they have to stand too close? Why was she smiling at him like that? Childe could not help but feel a strange…possessiveness towards Lumine; he wanted that smile reserved for him, and only him. That excitement was only meant to be for him…her hand…her soft, beautiful pale hands…no one else should be able to touch that…but him.

His hand tightened into a fist, his knuckles whitening as his lips pressed tightly against each other. A murderous stare was leered over at the alchemist who stood too close to the traveler, his traveler, and he decided that he wanted to put a stop to their conversation.

So, he allowed a friendly smile to take over his features, and he strode up to them.

“Hey, Lumine, who’s your friend?” He stood behind Lumine, and casually placed one hand on her shoulder.

Lumine looked up at him, then decided to introduce the two.

“Ah, yes, that’s right. Albedo, allow me to introduce to you Tartaglia. He is the 11th of the Fatui Harbingers, and he is currently on a little business here in Dragonspine.”

“Nice to meet you. You may also call me Childe,” Childe let out a hand for the alchemist to shake.

Albedo was not fazed at all by the fact that he was a member of the Fatui, and shook his hand either way.

“Pleasure. I’m Albedo, Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius.”

Childe’s hand gripped Albedo’s hand like a bear trap, and Albedo simply glanced down at their hands, then back up at the Fatui.

“Haha, my bad,” Childe let go of the alchemist’s hand. “I didn’t realize I was squeezing too much.”

Albedo didn’t respond, but only offered a curt nod.

“So,” Childe started, placing a hand on his hip. “Knights of Favonius, huh? How is that going for ya?”

“It’s quite alright. Although my main focus and purpose is on my research right now.”

“I see,” Childe nodded, then feigned a sigh. “Well, I hate to cut this short, but I believe the Traveler and I have some business to attend to.”

Lumine’s head whipped up at him, and she looked confounded.

“Let’s go, Lumine.” He tried to pull her along, but Lumine resisted.

“W-wait, hang on a minute…! I haven’t seen Albedo in a very long time, Childe! It’s okay if we stayed and talked for a little while – that is, if Albedo doesn’t mind, of course.” She looked at him with a pleading expression, before glancing over at the alchemist.

Childe tried his best to contain his irritation, and the alchemist was not making it any better for him.

Albedo crossed his arms, and locked his teal eyes with the Harbinger’s blue ones. “Well, I wouldn’t mind, Miss Lumine; but regarding any entry into the lab; unfortunately, I cannot have the Harbinger near my research.”

Childe’s lips stretched into a stiff smile and tilted his head to the side sinisterly. “What, are you scared that the big, bad Fatui might steal your research? Don’t worry, the Fatui’s investigations and scientific analyses are far more advanced than what there is to offer here.”

Albedo’s brows lowered in irritation as he frowned at the Harbinger. “With all due respect, I have strict confidentiality rules against those who are not involved with the Knights of Favonius.” He then glanced at Lumine. “Miss Lumine here, however, is allowed to join me because she has helped me plenty in the past. While your relationship with her has nothing to do with me, you’re still a Fatui Harbinger. I’m not foolish enough to give you that type of freedom just because you’ve befriended our Honorary Knight.”

“Alright, that’s enough. We are not here to cause any trouble, or get involved in any business.” Lumine stepped in between the two of them, and placed her hands on her hips as she looked at them.

Childe’s fists clench so tight at those words, and it took every shred of will in him to not summon his Electro polearm and pierce the alchemist. There was that itch for battle he wanted to scratch – and he wished it could be with Albedo this time. However, he was not here to cause trouble. He was not foolish enough to create problems with a member of the Knights of Favonius; their relations with the Fatui are already tense enough.

He shifted his gaze to Lumine, who looked very troubled at the tension that grew between the two. She was starting to get worried; and it did not suit her. He was angry. Angry at her for wanting to spend time with another man than him, angry that she wanted to stay longer in an area that he was clearly not allowed to be in. He couldn’t hang around any further – he needed to rip into something, he wanted to fight and take it out on…on her.

But he can’t. He won’t. It was not fair of him; because in reality, Lumine did not do anything wrong. She befriended the alchemist way before she met him, and he’d be lying if he said he was okay with how close they were.

“Oh, don’t you worry, Traveler. There won’t be any trouble at all,” his tone was bitter, and it did not go unnoticed by Lumine, who was taken aback with the way how he sarcastically referred to her. Childe took a few steps back, and despite his stiff smile, his gaze on Lumine were as cold as the biting winds of Dragonspine. “I have some business to attend to, myself. I do not want to be late. See you later.” He offered them a quick salute, and did not hesitate to walk away.

Lumine did not hesitate to jog a few steps towards him, calling out his name.

“Ah-Tartaglia! Wait!” Her hand reached out to him, but he only ignored her, and eventually disappeared down the path.

If it wasn’t for the sheer cold that gripped at her and trembled her bones, she would go after him, but she couldn’t move – and she was starting to get dizzy. Her arms wrapped themselves around her, and her eyes shut tight. Her breathing was starting to get heavy; blowing out puffs of her breath.

She then felt something heavy and warm on her form; it was a coat, and she let out a small gasp when she felt an arm around her, pulling her close. Her head whipped to look up at Albedo, who gestured his head towards the cave where his lab resided, and without another word, he steered her towards the entrance.

Lumine only leaned into whatever warmth there was, and that was Albedo, because she would be damned if she fainted from the drop of her body temperature.

However, she did not see that Tartaglia was watching them the whole time – standing far from where they were. He was seething with rage; his knuckles were bloodied when he subconsciously punched the boulder beside him, his teeth clenching tightly when he saw the way the alchemist pull Lumine close, and how Lumine leaned towards him rather than resist. His deadly stare might as well burn up whatever was before his sight. His body grew restless – he needed to fight – bloodlust bubbled up inside him, and he did not hesitate to hunt down camps of hilichurls and settlements of Frostarm Lawachurls, and unleash his wrath.

After terrorizing some of the monsters that inhabited Dragonspine, Childe sat on a peak where he could have a good view of the mountains, leg dangling as he rested his elbow on his knee, and was lost in his thoughts. All that fighting did not settle down the tight knot he felt in his chest when he recalled what he saw earlier.

He was jealous.

He was jealous when he saw Lumine getting too close to another man. But why, though? The only ones who would feel jealous of something like that was someone who—

His eyes widened, and his lips parted in realization.

The only ones who would feel jealous like that is someone who…carried feelings for the other. Someone who felt…romantically attracted.

Then that means…

It all dawned on him like someone spilling a bucket of ice over his head. That strange tingle…the feeling of yearning; the desire to be around her and go on adventures, the way her smiles made his heart soar, the way she brings out the best of himself and motivates him to become stronger after every spar, the way he loved to look into those enchanting golden eyes that reminded him of sunlight, the way he felt so calm and content with her mere presence…

Childe covered his face with his hand and bit out a curse. He finally understood what it all meant.

Those deep feelings…He wanted her. He wanted Lumine.

If there was one thing that he hated the most, it was sharing what he thought was his. That was why he was so angry when he first met that darned Chief Alchemist – he saw a potential threat.

“мое солнышко. He remembered whispering to himself.

Yet woefully, he felt miserable just by acknowledging that he had feelings for her…because there was a high chance that she did not feel the same way. Their affiliations just made them incompatible. Hurt flickered over his features – maybe he shouldn’t have gotten too involved with her. Maybe he should have maintained a distance after the whole incident with Teucer, rather than jump at the chance of starting a fresh chapter with their friendship.

And…maybe he shouldn’t have invited her out here in the first place just to celebrate his birthday with him.

An empty smile graced his lips, and he stood up. He looked over the scenery once more, then turned around and made his way down the path that led straight to his camp.

‘This was all a big mistake.’

Albedo passed over a bowl of soup to Lumine, who took it from his hands and muttered her gratitude, then sighed.

“I’m sorry again, Albedo. I did not expect that to happen.”

Albedo was shuffling over at his desk, looking over some sketches and diagrams.

“There is nothing to apologize for, Miss Lumine. None of it was your fault.”

“Still,” Lumine glanced away, conflicted. “I merely intended to introduce a friend.”

Albedo shifted his gaze to Lumine from his periphery, teal eyes regarding her. “Normally I do not involve myself in people’s personal lives, but I cannot deny my curiosity over this. Why are you befriending a member of the Fatui; a Harbinger no less?”

Lumine stared down at her soup, fiddling with the spoon. It was normal for her friend to ask that question; since it was very unusual to maintain a friendship with a member of the Fatui without them getting anything out of it. However, Childe always stood out, even as a Fatui, and that’s what drew Lumine to him. He was not himself at all today, and she did not understand why. Yet Lumine was no fool; the hurt was evident in those murky ocean blue eyes – eyes that she was used to seeing shine with excitement and zeal.

The way he walked away from her completely left her baffled; and she could not help but feel a sense of guilt over something she wasn’t sure she did. Could it possibly be because she introduced him to Albedo? Was she wrong to do so? She really did not like feeling that dimness of his usual positive, thrilling energy. She felt an unusual knot in her chest that she did not know how to squish down. All she could think of was wanting to see him again; wanting to be near Childe and to talk to him once more…

“It’s not like I wanted to. But throughout my journey, I discovered that he is not as bad as he seems. He clearly has his own reasons for doing the things that he does; just like everyone else.” She then looked up at Albedo, her expression was void of emotion, just like his. “I think you can understand that at this point, affiliations do not matter to me. I am not here to involve myself in other people’s lives, just like you. But that does not mean I care less for the friends that I made here.”

Albedo merely stared at her, taking in her words, before nodding at her in understanding.

“I feel the same way.”

That elicited a soft smile from the traveler, who then leisurely drank her soup. Some time had passed where they both discussed certain topics and helped out Albedo with parts of his research, and eventually, Lumine had finally regained her strength, feeling all warm and energized to resume her adventure.

“Thank you for everything, Albedo. I wish I could stay longer, but Paimon might be looking for me and I don’t want her to get worried.”

Albedo merely nodded and offered a light smile as he saw her off at the entrance.

“I should be thanking you, Traveler.”

Lumine only smiled back at him, and then heard a high-pitched voice calling out to her.

“LUMIIINE! Where have you been?!”

“Paimon! You found me,” Lumine moved closer to the fairy, who crossed her arms at her and huffed.

“You don’t just disappear like that! Paimon was so worried!” The fairy then turned her head sideways, indicating she was looking for someone. “And where is Childe? Wasn’t he supposed to be with you?”

Lumine tensed at his name, faltering only for a moment. Unsettlement fluttered in her eyes for a brief moment before composing herself.

“He left to take care of some business. We should find him, though.”

Paimon then floated to Albedo to offer her greetings, and after that, the two were about to set off.

Once they bid their farewell to Albedo, Lumine was now ready to find that Harbinger who walked away from her.

“Say, Paimon,” Lumine started.

“Hm?”

“Earlier you asked why Childe is not with me,”

“Yes? What about that? Do you know where he is?”

“I was just about to ask you that. Was he not at the camp before you came to find me?”

Paimon simply shook her head, brows furrowing. “No, he wasn’t. That’s why Paimon was worried. Did something happen?”

Lumine frowned, and hummed in thought. So, he did not return to his camp, after all.

“I don’t know, Paimon. He was not himself ever since he spoke to Albedo. For a second there, I thought they were going to fight.”

“Ugh! And here Paimon thought that for once, he could behave himself!”

Lumine ignored the fairy, who was muttering to herself about how he was a no-good Fatui who always stirred trouble, and instead, used her Elemental Sight to track down the Harbinger. She sensed a concentrated amount of energy radiating in the distance; and she felt that it could be him.

“Come on, I think I know where to find him.”

Lumine did not hesitate to dash forward, catching Paimon off guard, who then chased after her.

“Huh-? Hey! Wait!”

Childe was standing before new recruits, one hand on his hip while the other held his hydro polearm, and he regarded them with a blank stare. They were both shaking, and it was not because of the cold, but it was because of the intimidation that radiated off the Harbinger. They were also groaning in pain as they kneeled before him, and this did not please Childe at all.

He let out a sigh, and stalked around them like a predator ready to pounce on his prey.

“If you cannot handle pain, how would you expect to serve Her Majesty the Tsaritsa? Now stand up and fight me again.”

“M-Master Tartaglia…we are no match to your mighty strength…” One of them panted out.

“This is a part of your training,” Childe slammed the end of his polearm on the ground. “You will need to do this a few more times to get stronger for Her Majesty,”

“Look! There’s Childe!”

Childe’s ears perked up at the high-pitched voice that said his name, and he looked over his shoulder to see that head of blonde hair he knew all too well, and her floating companion that was pointing at his direction. His eyes locked directly with Lumine’s, who appeared to be catching her breath. He took in the way small puffs of clouds surrounded her soft pink lips, the way a blush was streaked across her cheeks and nose, and the way her gleaming, golden eyes looked at him expectantly.

The sadness that flittered in his ocean blue orbs vanished when he narrowed his eyes at her, before turning to face the recruits once more.

“We will continue this later. Disperse.” Without another word, Childe walked away from the soldiers and made his way to Lumine, his hydro polearm dissipating.

“What are you doing here, Lumine? I thought I told you I had business to attend to.”

“Childe,” Lumine walked closer to him until they were chests apart, and the Harbinger’s eyes widened briefly. “I wanted to check up on you. Is everything alright?”

His lips immediately curved into an empty smile, while his eyes maintained its cold gaze. “Of course. Why would I not be okay?”

Lumine frowned, then looked down and sighed, shaking her head. She then looked over at Paimon, a pleading expression casting over her face.

“Paimon, do you mind if you left me and Childe alone for a little? I just need to talk to him.”

Paimon only rolled her eyes and groaned. “Ahh, fine. But he better not leave you alone again! Or Paimon will pull out his hair!”

Normally, Childe would tease the fairy back, but he simply ignored her – all the more reason for Lumine to worry. With a quick thanks, Paimon disappeared into her own dimension, and it was just Lumine, Childe, and the blanket of snow surrounding them. Luckily, there was a brazier nearby.

“Childe, what’s the matter? Did I do something?”

He averted his gaze to look at the distant scenery; night time had befallen Dragonspine, the mountain peaks blending in with the dark vastness of the sky and clouds.

“No, you did not.”

Lumine glared. “You’re lying,”

He still did not look at her. “No, I am not.”

Lumine reached out and cupped his cheeks with both hands, turning his head to look at her.

His eyes widened at the way her eyes gleamed with guilt and misery, her brows twisting in concern.

“Why are you acting this way… You know you can talk to me…”

His hand slowly reached up to press over hers for a brief moment, then he slowly shut his eyes in his attempt to fight the urge to lean against them.

“Lumine…” He whispered; his throat heavy with emotion.

He then opened his eyes, and he noticed the way the she glowed an orange hue due to the flames nearby, and it reminded him of the sunset.

‘If only you knew what you’re doing to me.’

Then, his mind flashed back to when he saw the way she leaning against Albedo, and he felt his chest knot once more, and resentment pulsed inside him, prompting him to release his hand and step away from her.

“Ah-Tartaglia-!” Lumine gasped, and she was facing his back; he was walking away from her again. That pang of pain she felt crawled its way back into her heart – and she hated it… hated how it felt like he was drifting far away from her.

She could not stand it – she wanted to him to smile at her; she wanted him to laugh with her, talk to her, and make her heart flutter like he did every time she was around him. She just wanted…him…

She fought back unshed tears as her hands clenched into fists, and she shouted at his retreating figure.

“Just tell me what I did so I can fix it! Please!”

He stopped in his tracks, his fists quivering as he fought his emotions from that were on the verge of tumbling out of his heart; a cocktail of rage, anguish, and misery drumming inside him.

“You’re not making this any easier for me, you know.” He finally spoke, and Lumine perked up, listening intently.

“I was ready to just be friends with you; to just be your sparring partner and nothing more. We would both continue our own paths without any personal feelings involved…that is until I found myself seeking you out without even thinking about it.”

Lumine’s breath grew shallow, his words paralyzing her.

“I told myself; it was merely because you were a fun person to be around. A sparring partner who was pretty special.” A strained chuckle burst out of him. “Next thing I knew, nothing seemed fun without you experiencing it with me. All I wanted was to join you in your travels – in any way I can, just so that I could be near you.”

Lumine subconsciously put a hand to her chest in an attempt to will her heart that was about to break out of her ribcage as the Harbinger continued to talk.

“When I realized that I was highly attracted to you, there was no backing out. But it was fine, it was just an attraction - until I saw you with…with him.” He spat out, looking at her over his shoulder, and a chilling flurry of wind blew by and tickled his red scarf.

“Just you wanting to spend time someone else other than me…just…” He shut his eyes and took in a deep breath, trying to calm down the wrath that was bubbling up. “You don’t understand how angry I felt, when I saw you and that fucking alchemist all cozied up together in his little science lab.” He whipped around to turn to her fully, his ocean blue eyes piercing her with an icy glare.

In a few strides, he was in front of her once more, and she was frozen in her spot as she anticipated what he was going to do next. His hand reached out to gently press against her cheek, his touch completely contrasting the icy look on his face.

“Lumine,” he whispered softly. “Don’t you know what you’re doing to me?”

A conflicted breath escaped her throat, and she could not find any words to say as she stuttered. “I—”

“It’s hard enough to accept that you and I are completely incompatible due to our affiliations…It’s hard enough to accept that you might not feel the same way but…why…why can’t I stop thinking about you?”

“Childe…” Lumine whispered, her lashes fluttering as the warmth in his hand diffused into her skin.

“Why do I…” He was starting to lean in closer, eyeing her bottom lip that he was grazing with his thumb.

Lumine was in a daze…lost in his touch, lost in his proximity. Even her eyes flickered to his lips, and her hand slowly reached up to grab at his jacket.

“Why do I want you so much…?”

Like a dam that broke, Lumine pulled down at his scarf, stood on her the tip of her toes, and pressed her lips against his.

Childe’s eyes immediately went wide in shock – heat rushing into his face as he felt his heart pounding against his chest. He felt her arms reach up to wrap around his neck, and her hand tangle in his hair; and he did not hesitate to tilt his head to deepen the kiss as his arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer to him.

In that kiss, he spilled out every bit of desire he felt for Lumine; his lips moving with the passion and aggression of a man hungry for the sweet, perfect taste of a beautiful woman. Her lips parted, giving his tongue access to tangle with hers, earning a soft moan from the girl that fit so perfectly in his arms.

They then gasped softly as they parted for air, their eyes never leaving each other. Their faces with both flushed thanks to the heat of their kiss, and after a few moments, Lumine finally spoke.

“You really are an idiot, did you know that?”

Childe froze, and she continued, smiling up at him.

“You’re the only one who makes me feel that way, too; and I don’t know when it happened…but…I just…love feeling close to you.” Her gaze averted shyly.

Archons, she was too perfect. Too perfect, too sweet, too adorable…his arms tightened around when he saw sadness gleam into those beautiful, ethereal golden eyes of hers.

“That’s why it hurts when you are not around me…when you walk away from me and lose that smile and excitement of yours.”

Childe shook his head and leaned his forehead against hers, smiling as remorse laced his tone.

“Forgive me, Lumine…I just could not stand the thought of you being with another man. That’s how bad I have it for you. Can you blame me? Hurting you was the last thing I wanted, but it was too painful to stick around.”

Lumine sighed, looking back at him. “You really need to stop assuming how I feel, Childe…”

“You’re right. I’m sorry.” he apologized once more, lips curving into that gentle smile as he nuzzled her cheek with his nose, melting in her embrace.

Lumine giggled at his touch, and then her eyes widened as she remembered something.

“Tartaglia,”

“Mm?”

Her hands moved to hold both sides of his cheeks, thumbs caressing his skin.

She leaned in once more, lips touching his, and whispered, “Happy Birthday.”

She then captured his lips in a sweet kiss, gently suckling on his bottom lip, eliciting a low groan from the male in her arms, then parting gently with a quick peck.

Childe was in a daze, absorbing the tingling feeling of her warm lips that would be imprinted into his heart permanently.

When he regained his senses, he picked her up, walked over to a tree and pushed her body against it, and leaned his lips against her ear. There was no such thing as feeling cold at this point, since both of their bodies flushed against each other was enough to radiate heat.

“Gosh, you’re just so perfect, мое солнышко. You’re only going to make me fall harder for you,”

Lumine gasped softly as a hot blush bridged over her face, and she breathed out her next words, “Ah- W-wait; you never told me what that mea—"

He instantly dove in for a hungry kiss, his tongue entering her mouth as he pressed against her form, hands reaching for every curve and soft skin he can touch while drawing out little gasps and moans from the gorgeous woman that melted into his arms.

He’d tell her what it means later, but right now, he just wanted to feel every part of her as much as he can.

This was by far, Tartaglia’s most unforgettable birthday present – and that was having Lumine as his.

The End.
