It's exactly 12 midnight, and Hyunjin finds himself staring at the blaring red numbers while his stomach is growling. The dots separating 24 and the two zeroes keep on blinking, as if mocking Hyunjin who's been trying to close his eyes long enough for him to fall asleep.
Chan is asleep beside him, and Hyunjin finds himself snorting at the parallels. Usually Chan is the one awake and Hyunjin is the one drooling away on their pillows, but for some reason, Hyunjin is still stuck staring at the clock on his nightstand.
24:01. Hyunjin's stomach is still protesting.
He decides he'll reheat some of the leftover pasta they had for tonight's dinner. Maybe that snack would satisfy his hunger and then he can go back to sleeping.
The more he thinks about it, the more he thinks it's easier said than done.
He still went out of bed and trekked to the kitchen with nothing but his pajamas on. The hallways are so dark, and Hyunjin has half of the mind to get scared. The other half though is determined to make his stomach stop eating itself, so he blindly made his way out. By blindly, it means he's hopelessly grabbing onto their walls and picture frames as he stumbled on his feet like a walking zombie. And then the microwave's bright red numbers greeted him as he stepped foot beneath the kitchen doorway. 24:14. Oh wow, it took Hyunjin 13 minutes to walk, what the fuck.
He doesn't have time to wonder how that happened because he's still hungry, so he tried to grope the wall for the light switch. The keyword there is tried, because not long after he set his hand he tripped on one of the chairs, barely missing the edge of the table as he crashed onto the floor, chair included. Oh, Hyunjin knows that made a loud sound, internally cringing at the possibility he woke Chan up. When the clock on the microwave turned 24:22 and he heard nothing but his own breaths, he steadied himself and the chair, more careful now to make sure he's the only one awake right now. It feels a little like he's doing something illegal, and the silly thought made him smile.
Hyunjin finally found the light switch, the whole room flooding with white as the clock said 24:27. He quickly got to work, pulling out the Tupperware with the carbonara Chan cooked and popped it in the microwave. The moment the food started spinning, Hyunjin sat on the counter and swung his feet along with the sound of the water dripping from the sink. They should really get that fixed sometime.
It's silent and still, Hyunjin's eyes did not droop as he waited. He should've brought his phone with him, so he can distract himself with some mindless scrolling through Twitter.
The moment his stomach became background noise, was the moment the microwave let him know his food was done. And wow, did it really want him to know.
Hyunjin forgot that the stupid microwave they got on sale when they were just moving in beeps so loud. And it's the really obnoxious beeping, the one where it sounds like an emergency alert. They never found out why and it's usually not a bother since they're both awake whenever someone uses it. Well, except now.
Footsteps can be heard along with the obnoxious beeps, and Hyunjin isn't sure if it's his or Chan's. He still tried his best to quickly shut it off, but apparently he wasn't quick enough as he heard a slam.
"What was that?" Hyunjin looked behind him with a guilty smile, the not-too-hot Tupperware in his hands. Chan seems to deflate a little, his guarded stance gone. Hyunjin chuckled a little when he realized Chan forgot about their annoying microwave, until he also realized he woke Chan up. He just woke up his insomniac boyfriend at the time he was actually sleeping.
"Oh my god, Channie. I'm so sorry—" Hyunjin is already fluttering around Chan, the Tupperware he was previously holding making a loud smack as he dropped it on the counter. Chan shut him up though, pulling Hyunjin for a hug. It calmed Hyunjin down, snuggling on Chan's neck.
"It's not your fault, although I'm surprised you wanted a midnight snack. You're usually asleep at this time," Chan said as he rubbed hands on Hyunjin's back. Hyunjin was so comfortable, however, that they stood in silence there for a while.
"Can't sleep. Hungry." Hyunjin mumbled, pressing himself closer to Chan out of embarrassment. It got a giggle out of his boyfriend, and Hyunjin will never get tired of that sound.
"You know what, I'll keep you company and then let's get back to bed."
"But—" Hyunjin started to protest, knowing there's a chance Chan might have trouble sleeping peacefully again. The other put his hand on Hyunjin's mouth quick enough for Hyunjin to voice that out.
"I know what you're thinking, I promise I'll sleep along with you." The smile Chan gave him reassured Hyunjin a little, so he poked his boyfriend's dimple before he smiled back.
"You better." He kissed Chan's cheek, going back to the counter to now set two plates for the both of them, humming a soft tune as Chan sidled behind him and hugged his waist.
By the time they both felt tired to sit and lounge on the kitchen table, the clock read 5:57. It doesn't matter though, because Hyunjin finds himself enveloped in Chan's arms and both of them are snoring lightly as the sun is starting to peek out.
