No Place is Home Without You

Summary:

This fic takes place after the end of Zankyou no Terror. It's short, but sweet.

Work Text:

The light that entered was warmly glowing, and it shone down in gentle pillars from above. Around was a meadow, flowers blowing calmly in the breeze. The most striking thing, however, were the clouds. Ranging from soft pink to white, they drifted across the sky in a comatose manner, making the flow of time seem to slow down. Nine lay in the grass, sight fixated on the clouds, finding familiar shapes and daydreaming. He had only been here a while, but the sight was one to hold his gaze for a very long time.

“Nine!”

A voice was heard in the distance, it was one he knew, one of the voices he could detect in less than a heartbeat. The voice of the one he had known forever. Sitting up, his eyes matched Twelves', and he watched as the boy ran up to where he was sitting.

“So you made it.”

The brunet’s smile widened, as he took a place close beside to Nine.

“Of course I did, silly.”

“Do the clouds ever change here?” Nine asked.

Twelve looked away in thought. “I don't think so, although I haven't been here much longer than you...” he trailed off. “I was actually kind of hoping I wouldn't see you for a bit.”

Nine exhaled and grinned, and lay back down on the grass. “You and I both know that's not realistic. If anything, I would have ended up here before you, without interference of course.”

Twelve looked down as his smile faded. “I know. That didn't stop me from hoping.”

Twelve lay close beside Nine, and looked from the clouds, to him, and back at the clouds. They lay like that for quite some time, neither really knowing how long.

“What colour do you see me as?

Twelve looked towards Nine, a small smile slowly returning. “I was curious as to when you'd ask that. I see you as gold.”

“Gold...?”

“Yes. Nobody else either. I think it's because you're special.”

Twelve paused.

“The most special to me.”

Nine's breathing slowed, as he slowly turned to meet Twelve's gaze.
“The most, huh?”

Twelve beamed. “The most.”

The sky had slightly darkened, and if you looked closely, you could see small stars faintly glowing in the distance. Although it was darker, it hadn't gotten colder, and the warmth from the earlier sunbeams had remained.

“I'm glad you're here.”

Twelve rolled closer to Nine, gently nuzzling beside him. “And why's that?”

Nine brushed his fingers through Twelve's hair. “Because no place is home without you, of course. No matter where we went, it always felt right because you were near me.”

“...Nine...”

Twelve's smile grew wider, from cheek to cheek, as he pressed into Nine. A warmth spread through Nine's body, one he had never really felt until now.

The two slowly drifted to sleep as night fell over the meadow. It was silent and serene, the only sounds from birds calling far, far in the distance. The stars shone in the sky, the moon let out a comforting glow. Beneath the atmosphere was a tender feeling of affection. A place like home.
