“Is she ready?” Sagewhisker asked.
Yellowfang tossed her head. “She’s my apprentice. Of course she’s ready.”
The living seers were gathered around the Moonstone. This was Cinderpaw’s first trip by herself, and Yellowfang was certain that Mudfur and the others would have expressed confusion, followed by condolences.
As an apprentice with no mentor, the seers would confer. Cinderpaw was certain to be deemed worthy — a moon or two more and Yellowfang would have given Cinderpaw her full name.
“Barkface is performing the ceremony,” Sagewhisker murmured. “Shame. I hoped we’d get to do it.”
Yellowfang flicked her tail. “It’s probably for the best. We’d just bicker over names. Someone would try to name her Cinderfeather. Or Cindershine.”
“Those are good names.”
Yellowfang flicked her ear irritated. “Good names, but not good names for her. Barkface will pick well.”
Cinderpelt, newly named, touched her nose to the Moonstone, and Yellowfang prepared to greet her apprentice.
