Work Text:

The morning sun shined over National City. Its citizens were going about their days; people drove to work, jogged through the city’s public parks, or simply lounged in their homes on the beautiful Saturday morning.

Reaching into the sky was the headquarters for L-Corp. When it came to groundbreaking companies, L-Corp was the pinnacle model. No matter the field, from nanotech and pharmaceuticals to media and food safety and everything in-between, L-Corp had a hand in it, and they operated in each of those fields extremely well.

And this was due to the leadership of its young CEO, Lena Luthor.

Lena brought the company back from near ruin. “Luthor Corp” never had the most stellar reputation. Her brother, Lex, had once been CEO. However, his unethical, illegal, and in some instances, downright evil business decisions nearly brought the company to ruin.

At one point, Lex had been arrested and sent to prison, leaving the company with a bleak future. Lena had been brought in and she went to work, placing a priority over a complete rebranding of the company in an attempt to erase the public’s image of Luthor Corp.

With Lena at the helm, L-Corp returned from the brink, and the company’s philanthropic contributions had allowed the public to trust them once more.

Lena sighed as she sat in her brightly lit office. While Saturdays were typically lazy for some, it was work 24/7 for her. She was currently talking with the company’s R&D Department about the current status of a new formula for food preservatives.

Her phone suddenly rang. “Miss Luthor?”

Lena looked over and clicked the button to answer. “Yes, Jess?” she replied.

“There is a delivery man here for you,” Jess said.

Lena’s brow furrowed. “Send him in.” She waited a few moments before the door opened and a delivery man entered. She rolled her eyes when she saw him with a large bouquet in his hand.

“Hello,” she greeted, almost tiredly. “Just set them over there.”

The delivery man turned and saw a table that seemed to buckle under the weight of dozens of vases with other flower bouquets. Along with them were other items; necklaces and other jewelry, clothes, and other expensive items.

“You, uh…” the delivery man said. “You seem to have a lot of admirers.”

Lena rolled her eyes. “At least a quarter are from one man. None of them interest me.”

The delivery man chuckled and said, “Well, this one’s from a ‘James Olsen’.”

“Oh, James,” Lena said. “You are persistent.”

The delivery man tipped his hat and said, “Well, you have a good day, miss.”

Lena waved and said, “You as well.” As the delivery man walked away she sighed. Ever since L-Corp picked itself back up, many people jumped on the fact she was an eligible bachelorette. These gifts were just the tip of the iceberg; contracts from other companies, lavish parties commemorating L-Corp’s accomplishments, and other things were done in attempts to woo the young, beautiful billionaire businesswoman.

None of them caught her interest.

Lena was about to go through her email inbox when she looked at the clock on her computer.

10:32 A.M.

Lena smiled and scooted out from her desk. She stood up and walked around and out of her office. As she passed by Jess’s desk she said, “Jess, I’m heading out for my coffee.”

“Understood, Miss Luthor,” Jess replied.

Lena smiled again as she walked onto the elevator and pushed the button for the bottom floor. She was nearly buzzing as the elevator slowly descended. The elevator dinged and the door opened to allow Lena to exit. She smiled and waved to the security guards and a few other employees before exiting.

Lena smiled as she walked down the sidewalk. The people looked to her in a much friendlier manner than they had her brother or even her when she was putting forth all of her efforts to bring the company back. The people loved her and all she had done for the city.

Lena rounded the corner and smiled when she came face-to-face with a small quaint coffee shop. Its design reminded Lena of a log cabin in the woods, making it look out of place sandwiched between a couple of skyscrapers. The painted sign above the door read Danvers’ Coffee Co.

Lena walked in and smiled. The space was half-filled with customers happily sipping on their drinks or eating sweets, cheerful conversation filling the air. Lena looked ahead to the counter and her smile grew more.

Standing at the counter was a young woman. Her blonde hair was tied into a ponytail and black glasses framed her face. She wore a simple blue T-shirt and black jeans, an apron with small stains all over. She smiled cheerily as she placed some items on the counter.

“Okay, I have a medium Tropical Sunshine, a medium Jolt Juice Kicker, and a small House Special,” she said with a large smile.

The customers took their items and gave their thanks, placing some money in the tip jar on the counter. As the customers walked away, they revealed Lena standing behind them.

The blonde’s eyes widened and her smile grew. “Hi Lena!” she greeted cheerfully.

Lena chuckled. “Hello, Kara,” she replied.

Although only knowing her for a little over a year, Kara Danvers was Lena’s best friend. During the campaign to rebrand L-Corp, Lena started by investing money in the small businesses in the city. That was when she found the small, rundown coffee shop.

Despite Kara’s friendly nature, the coffee shop she and her sister Alex ran wasn’t bringing in enough business. Their bills were mounting, and they faced the threat of being closed down.

However, Lena arrived one day and immediately found herself captivated by Kara’s bubbly personality as well as her enthusiasm and determination. Plus, their coffee was really good, and so Lena took it upon herself to help the Danvers sisters. Within only a few short months, the coffee shop was one of the most popular in the city.

Lena approached the counter and Kara instantly leaned over and hugged her. She returned the blonde’s hug enthusiastically. Pulling away, Lena commented, “I swear, you’re going to crush me one of these days.”

Kara giggled. “Sorry. I can’t help it sometimes.”

Lena smiled. “How’ve you been, Kara?”

“I’ve been great,” Kara replied. “Alex has been doing alright too.”

“That’s good,” Lena said. She smiled and asked, “Do you think you can take a break right now?”

Kara beamed. “Of course. Anything for you, Lena.”

Smiling, Lena said, “Then I’ll take my usual and you can join me at our usual booth.”

Kara nodded and got to work as Lena headed for the small two-person booth next to the counter. She sat down and simply watched as Kara worked. She smiled at the looks of concentration on her face. Within only a few minutes, Kara walked over with a small tray.

“One medium Shot in the Dark and a raspberry scone for the greatest CEO and bestest friend ever,” she said.

Lena laughed and blushed as Kara set her coffee down. Lena looked around the coffee shop and said, “Business certainly looks good.”

Kara nodded. “All thanks to you.”

Lena waved her hand. “Oh stop. I’m not here running this place.”

“You humble yourself,” Kara said. “If it wasn’t for you this wouldn’t be here. Alex and I were about a month away from losing this place. Nobody wanted to even walk in here, let alone spend their money. But then you came along and put so much into this place that people flocked in.”

Lena smiled. “If only the people had known then how sweet and caring you are.”

“And if only more people would see how benevolent and kind you are,” Kara said. She leaned in and whispered, “Unlike certain…others.”

Lena chuckled. This was exactly how their friendship developed. She and Kara would have meetings like this to discuss what to do for Kara’s shop. However, once things started looking up, their “meetings” continued. Coffee either at the shop or lunch at Lena’s office, which quickly grew into movie nights or lunches outside of work.

And at all of them, they grew closer. Lena had always had friends, but they were mostly people connected through her family’s ties. However, Kara’s friendship felt genuine, as if she enjoyed Lena for who she was.

“So, what’s next for the astounding Lena Luthor?” Kara asked.

Lena smiled. “Now who calls me that?” Kara blushed and she replied, “I am currently awaiting a call from William Reynolds.”

“Of Reynolds Holdings?” Kara asked.

“The very same,” Lena said. “We’ve been talking about a potential partnership, but he’s being stubborn.”

Kara smiled. “If anyone can bring him to his knees, you can.”

Lena blushed and smiled. The two talked for another fifteen minutes before Alex appeared from the kitchen and said, “Hey Kar. Break time’s over.”

Kara looked over and said, “I’m the boss, so I decide my breaks.” Lena covered her mouth as she laughed.

Alex cocked her eyebrow. “Yeah, well I’m boss too, and I’m saying get your butt back here.”

Kara giggled and said, “Okay, just a minute.” She turned to Lena and said, “Well back to the ‘coffee’ grinder.”

Lena laughed again. “It’s time for me to head back to the office too.” She reached into her pocket to withdraw her wallet, placing the payment for her drink and scone.

Kara took the money and said, “Here, let me get your change.”

“No need,” Lena said with a wave. “Keep it.”

Kara looked down and noticed Lena gave her a fifty for only about a seven-dollar charge. “W-What? No, I can’t accept all this from you.”

“Too late,” Lena said with a smile. Just as she stood up, her phone went off. She answered it and smiled. “Why hello, Mister Reynolds.”

Kara smiled. “Go get him,” she said quietly.

Lena stood up and placed her hand over the phone. “Goodbye, Kara,” she said with a wave.

Kara blushed and waved. “B-Bye, Lena.” She watched as the raven-haired CEO walked out. She sighed happily as she watched her through the window.

“God, you really have it bad.”

Kara snapped from her reverie and noticed Alex staring at her with her arms crossed, her brow cocked once more.

“U-Uh…” Kara stammered. “W-What are you talking about?”

Alex smiled and shook her head. “I talking about the ‘thing’ you have with the darling Lena Luthor.”

Kara’s eyes widened. “What?!” she said. “I don’t have a crush on her!”

“Huh, funny, I never said anything about a crush,” Alex said.

Kara looked to Alex, eyes wide again at her slip up. “I, uh…” She looked around, trying to find something to distract her. “Does the panini press need cleaning?”

“Just finished while you were on your ‘date’,” Alex said.

“It…It wasn’t a date,” Kara said. She walked back around the counter and began rearranging some of the muffins and other sweets they had on display.

Alex sighed. “Kara, I’m not dumb. It’s clear you like her.”

Kara shook her head. “No, I’m just being a nice person, like I am to everyone.”

“Kara,” Alex deadpanned. “A person ‘just being nice’ doesn’t learn a customer’s order.”

“W-Well, she’s here so much and-”

“Or drives to four different grocery stores to find one special ingredient for something a customer ordered.”

“I just-”

“Or stares at them in absolute adoration every time she’s in here.”

“Alright!” Kara snapped, drawing the attention briefly of the customers inside. She blushed and hid in the backroom, Alex following her. She sat down upon a stepstool and sighed.

“Okay,” she said. “Okay. I admit it. I do have a crush on her.”

Alex’s teasing tone went away as she looked upon her sister’s troubled face. “I don’t understand why you’re beating yourself up so much over it.”

“You don’t?” Kara asked. “She’s, God she’s….a genius; she’s caring, she’s strong, she’s…everything.” She hugged her legs closer to her body and sadly looked down at her feet. “And I’m just…me. Boring, bland Kara Danvers.”

Alex immediately pulled up a nearby milk crate and sat next to her sister. Placing a hand on her shoulder she said, “Kara, you are not bland. You have so much to offer. You’re smart, you’re funny, you’re kind, you’re selfless. You’re everything too. Anyone would be lucky to be with you, especially Lena.”

Kara sighed again. “She probably doesn’t feel the same.”

Alex shrugged. “Well, you’ll never know unless you talk to her.”

Kara’s eyes widened. “W-What? I-I can’t just-”

“Kara,” Alex interrupted. “If you keep putting it off, then you’re only going to make things worse.”

Kara sighed again. “What do I even say?”

“Just be yourself, Kara,” Alex suggested. “You and Lena have grown so close over the time you’ve gotten to know her. She’ll listen.”

Kara took a deep breath. “Okay. I’ll do it. I’ll go to L-Corp tomorrow and I’ll talk to her.”

Alex smiled and hugged her sister. “You can do it, sis.” She looked over and said, “Now let’s get going. We’ve got a line forming.”

Kara returned the smile and stood up, ideas already forming in her mind on what to do.

She could do this.

She could not do this.

Kara could barely sleep the night before. Her dreams were filled with just about every scenario; from the best possible to less-than-ideal, to the absolute worst outcomes. All of them made Kara sick.

Kara walked along the sidewalk, Lena’s usual Shot in the Dark in one hand as well as her own Four Berry smoothie in another. She tried her hardest to keep her breathing under control as she entered L-Corp’s lobby.

A receptionist noticed Kara walking in and smiled, knowing Kara from her various other visits. The receptionist and waved her to go in. Kara walked to the elevator and pressed the button for Lena’s floor.

As the elevator ascended, Kara tried rehearsing everything she wanted to say. She had a plan, she really did. However, as the elevator slowly reached Lena’s floor, her mind went blank.

The door opened and Kara stepped out. Lena’s receptionist, Jess, looked up.

“Hello, Kara,” she greeted. “What brings you by?”

Kara smiled and held up her drinks. “I wanted to bring Lena her usual. I figured she’d be busy after her phone call yesterday.” She looked past and asked, “Is she available?”

Jess shook her head. “No. Didn’t you hear?”

Kara’s face fell a little. “No. What?”

Jess looked to Kara and said, “Well, Lena and William Reynolds talked extensively on the phone and she was able to get just about all of her ends of the deal met. However, Reynolds refuses to relocate, and he had already conceded enough. She asked that Miss Luthor move locations.”

“Move locations?” Kara asked. “Where?”

“Metropolis,” Jess answered.

Kara’s eyes widened. “W-What?”

Jess nodded. “Yes. She went straight home, packed a couple of suitcases, and caught a plane to Metropolis last night.” She smiled and added, “She was incredibly excited. This is huge for L-Corp, and if all goes well, we’ll be following Miss Luthor to Metropolis.”

Kara couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She was so absorbed with what she’d heard she didn’t realize Jess was talking to her.

“Kara?” she asked. “Is everything alright?”

Before the tears could spill, Kara quickly nodded and stammered, “I-I’m fine. I just need to go help Alex.” She hurried out of the office, leaving a confused Jess behind as she got on the elevator. As soon as the door closed the tears flowed freely.

She was too late. She was too timid; too afraid of the outcomes of what would happen after her confession. Now, all of those were dashed away. Lena had left National City.

Left her.

Kara managed to collect herself enough as the elevator dinged and the door opened. She hurried out of the building, making her way back towards the coffee shop. She hurried inside, barely hearing her sister say something before she ran into the small office, collapsing into the chair and crying.

The door slowly opened and Alex peered in. “Kara?” she asked timidly.

Kara sniffed and looked up at Alex. “H-Hey, Alex.”

“What happened?” she asked. “Did you tell her?”

Kara lifted her head. “N-No. I didn’t even get the chance.” Before Alex could ask anything else Kara said, “She’s gone, Alex. She’s gone, and is never coming back.”

“What?” Alex asked. “What do you mean?”

Kara sniffed. “She’s moved to Metropolis. Some big-time executive agreed to a partnership with L-Corp, but he didn’t want to relocate. So she agreed to move to Metropolis.”

Alex’s heart shattered at the sight of her sister upset. “Oh Kara, I’m so sorry.”

Kara shook her head and collected herself. “N-No. Lena is her own woman. This was her choice, a-and if she’s happy, then that’s all that matters.”

“But what about you, Kara?” Alex asked.

Kara shook her head. “I-I’ll be alright.” She sniffed and slowly stood up from her chair. “Come on, l-let’s get to work.”

Alex watched as Kara got up and walked back to the counter to begin working. She took a deep breath and followed her sister out.

Kara sat in her darkened apartment with the TV on. It had been weeks since Lena left National City, and she was watching a news report of Lena and Reynolds’s continued negotiations with the approaching merger.

“And on air tonight to tell us all about it, the hotshot CEO herself, Miss Lena Luthor,” the news anchor said.

Kara felt tears well in her eyes when Lena appeared on camera. “First off, congratulations, Miss Luthor.”

Lena smiled. “Thank you so much, Amanda.”

“It must feel really good to be you right now,” Amanda commented.

“It does,” Lena replied. “As a woman, I had to jump through all of the hurdles to get to where I am. However, all of my hard work and dedication has certainly paid off with L-Corp’s growth.”

“Indeed, Miss Luthor,” Amanda commented. “L-Corp has seen some of the most rapid growth of any company in the past fifteen years. With this upcoming merger, what is L-Corp’s path?”

Lena smiled again. “The negotiations are still ongoing but looking good. If all goes well, I’ll be calling Metropolis my home within a few weeks.”

Kara shook as a fresh wave of tears flowed. She collected herself as Amanda asked, “National City is quite a leap away from Metropolis. Is there anything you miss about it?”

Kara watched as Lena paused. “Some things. Mostly just friends, but the show must go on.”

“Indeed it must, Miss Luthor,” Amanda said. “Well, I wish you the best of luck.”

“Thank you, Amanda,” Lena replied.

Kara tuned out the rest of the news story as her head fell into her hands; she cried harder before she lied down on her couch.

Lena sat in her temporary office at Reynold’s Holdings. It was fairly barren–only the necessities one needs for a functioning office were inside. She had been using the office for the past week now, but if the partnership went through (which was to be signed today), then she’d be moving into her new office (and building).

There was a knock at the door and Lena looked up to see her temporary assistant, Phoebe, entering with a small tray in her hands.

“Good morning, Miss Luthor,” she greeted. “I’ve brought you your coffee and scone.”

Lena smiled. “Thank you, Phoebe.” She continued typing as Phoebe set the tray down and walked away. Not looking away from her screen, Lena grabbed the coffee and took a sip. Almost immediately she gagged; she pulled her small trashcan towards her and spit the coffee out.

It was terrible; it tasted like battery acid. She liked her coffee black, but this was extremely bitter. She went for the scone and took a bite, but spat it out as well. It tasted like sugar-coated cardboard.

“Man,” Lena thought. “I could go for some Danvers’ Coffee Co. right now.”

She stilled.

Danvers

Kara

Lena suddenly lost all interest in work. She brought up another webpage and looked up Danvers’ Coffee Co. She smiled when she saw various news articles about the coffee shop’s popularity. She saw the pictures of the Danvers sisters and noticed something.

Alex was all smiles in each photo. Kara was as well, but to Lena, it was so unlike her. All of the times she was with her, Kara’s smiles were genuine, but this time, it almost seemed forced.

Curious, Lena began looking on Kara’s social media pages. However, there wasn’t anything new on them. On her sister’s and other pages, she found Kara, where she noticed the same change.

Lena clicked on another article, which included an interview video along with it.

“Hello, National City. I’m Jay Jackson, and I’m here with the co-owners of a hidden gem tucked away in our grand city. Here we have sisters Kara and Alex Danvers of ‘Danvers’ Coffee Co., and we’re here today to listen to their story.” He turned and said, “Alex, we’ll start with you. How did all of this start?”

Alex smiled. “Well, Kara and I had worked together in this small coffee shop during our time together in college. I was studying Criminology and Kara was going for Journalism. However, after graduating, we both for some reason found ourselves drawn to the idea of starting our own shop.”

Jay smiled. “Fascinating. So Kara, what has been your journey?”

Lena looked and noticed that Kara had a distant look in her eyes. She quickly recovered and laughed nervously.

“Oh, sorry,” she said. “Uh, after graduating, we started looking into prospects at starting the coffee shop. We found this little, rundown office space sandwiched between these two skyscrapers. We used what little money we had to fix it up as best we could and purchase the necessary equipment.”

Lena listened intently to Kara’s story. She had been told it dozens of times, and she was enamored with both her and Alex’s strength and resilience. Kara continued on the screen.

“What little customers came always told us how much they like our coffee,” Kara said. “However, it wasn’t nearly enough to keep the place running. We were about a month tops from being forced to close.”

Kara’s mouth suddenly turned up into a smile. “Then one day, Lena Luther arrived.”

Jay’s jaw dropped. “The Lena Luthor?”

Kara nodded. “Yes. She loved our coffee so much, and when she saw our situation, she gave us so much. She poured money into renovations and marketing, and pretty soon, Danvers’ Coffee Co. became one of the best coffee shops in the city.”

Jay smiled. “Well, it was certainly nice of Miss Luthor to come to your aid.”

Kara smiled again. “She was...everything. She was so kind and caring. She didn’t have to help us, but she took it upon herself to do just that.”

“I had heard she is currently in talks about a merger with the William Reynolds,” Jay said. “There’s no stop in the action for Lena Luthor.”

“Yeah,” Kara said. Suddenly, Lena saw the distant look in Kara’s eyes again. She laughed nervously again. “S-Sorry. I...I haven’t been myself for the past couple of weeks or so.”

Jay nodded. “Well, it was great to hear from the both of you, and I wish you further luck with your shop.” He turned back to the camera and said, “Back to you in the studio.”

The video ended, leaving Lena in silence. Her head was swimming with thoughts about Kara. She was shaken from her thoughts by the door opening again. Phoebe walked in and said, “Miss Luthor, Mister Reynolds and some of his team are in the conference room.”

Lena’s eyes widened. “Oh, y-yes. Of course. I’ll be right there.” Phoebe left, allowing Lena to collect herself. She scooted out of her desk and walked with a heavy heart towards the conference room. She entered, finding Reynolds and a few men standing at the end. On the table was a single piece of paper.

“Ah, there she is!” Reynolds said loudly. “Miss Luthor, I am so glad that we were able to finally agree.”

Lena gave a small smile as the men clapped. “Th-Thank you, Mister Reynolds.”

Reynolds smiled as he grabbed a pen from his pocket. “All of the details we negotiated are right here. All you need to do is sign.” He set the pen down next to the paper.

Lena grabbed the pen and looked down. If she signed this paper, then everything would change. L-Corp’s prestige would skyrocket. Her name would gain more renown.

She would say goodbye to National City.

Goodbye to Kara...forever.

Lena thought back to everything that happened since she met Kara. The first time she’d met her. The long nights of planning out how they’d save the shop, and how they quickly turned into movie nights and lunches filled with non-work-related talk and laughter. With Kara, she felt so open; she had someone who’d listen, she had a shoulder to rest her head on, and sometimes to cry on...

“Oh my God,” Lena thought.

Lena slowly set the pen down. “I’m sorry, Mister Reynolds.”

Reynolds’s face fell. “What?”

Lena shook her head, her decision already final. “I don’t wish to sign.”

Reynolds sputtered over his words. “W-What? We’ve been working on this merger for months, and at the drop of a hat, you’re backing out?”

Lena nodded. “Yes. I am truly sorry, and I truly do appreciate the efforts you have gone through, but I cannot do this.” She collected herself to keep the tears from falling.  She pushed the paper away and said, “I will gladly reimburse you for whatever expenses incurred.”

With that, Lena turned and left the conference room. She quickly walked into her temporary office, collected her things, and left.

She had a plane to catch.

Lena was beyond lucky to find a plane to take her back to National City, arriving back at around 11:00 PM. She quickly found a cab and was driven into the city. Fifteen minutes later, the cab stopped outside Danvers’ Coffee Co.

Lena gave the cabbie his pay. “Thank you so much,” she said gratefully. She opened the door and walked out, stilling when she saw Kara alone at the counter. She was doing some last-minute cleaning before closing for the night.

“You can do this, Lena,” she thought. Taking a deep breath, she walked towards the door. She slowly placed her hand on the door and pushed it open. The little bell rang.

“I’m so sorry, but I just turned off the-” Kara looked up and her words died in her mouth. Her eyes widened and her mouth gaped as Lena slowly walked in.

“L-Lena?” she asked, almost in disbelief.

Lena waved weakly. “Hey, Kara.”

Kara immediately ran around the counter and rushed Lena. The raven-haired woman was winded by the blonde’s crushing embrace but instantly melted into it. She felt as if something missing from her life had returned.

Kara pulled away, tears in her eyes. “I-I thought you had left. I thought you’d moved to Metropolis. The merger...”

“I backed out,” Lena said.

Kara’s eyes widened. “W-Why? This meant so much to you. “This would have been great for you.”

Lena looked down sheepishly, a blush growing on her face. “I had realized some things while in Metropolis, and I knew I had to be here.”

“What things?” Kara asked.

Lena looked back to Kara. “You.”

“M-Me?” Kara asked.

Lena nodded. “I realized just how much of a kind, caring, wholesome, funny woman you are.” She paused as she quickly said, “A woman...I had fallen in love with.”

Kara gasped. “Did she just say that?” she thought. “Did she really say that?!”

Lena grew nervous at Kara’s expression and silence. “I-I understand if you don’t feel the same, but I needed to-”

Lena’s words were cut short when she felt a warm pair of lips gently press against hers. Her eyes widened as Kara softly kissed her. She sighed and closed her eyes before squeezing Kara again. They pulled away.

“Lena,” Kara said softly, “I have been in love with you since the first day I met you. Well before you offered to help the shop. I saw you as a strong, smart, and passionate woman, who would never let any sort of obstacle stand in her way.”

Lena clasped her hands around Kara’s. “When we spent time together, I felt like I could actually open up to you. Growing up, the people around me felt so fake, but with you, everything about you is genuine.” She looked up at Kara and said, “And the coffee was great too.”

The two women laughed in each other’s arms. Kara pulled Lena closer, resting her chin on top. They stayed in each other’s arms for a few moments before Kara pulled away and asked, “Lena Luthor, would you like to go to lunch with me tomorrow?”

Lena cocked an eyebrow. “Are you asking me on a date, Kara Danvers?”

Kara giggled. “I think we’ve gone on several with each other already.”

Lena laughed before lightly kissing Kara again. “I would love to.”

The next day, Alex was jogging along the sidewalk. It was Monday and the coffee shop was closed, giving her and Kara the day off.

As Alex approached the coffee shop, she noticed the lights inside were on. She jogged up and found Kara sitting at a particular booth. In the seat opposite of her, she saw a raven-haired woman talking and laughing with her sister.

Alex’s smile was possibly the largest ever as she jogged past.
