Work Text:

“Hey... Kai?”

Yeonjun waits for the window to open. A minute or two passed but the younger hasn’t come out to meet him yet. Impatient, Yeonjun bent down to pick up another rock, attempting to throw it again at the lad’s closed window, if ever Kai did not hear the first one.

This is the first one. The first time Kai ran late to meet him for their secret rendezvous. Not so secret, I guess. Yeonjun and Kai’s relationship isn’t a secret to the people they are closed with. In fact, a good amount of people knows the score between them.

It’s just his parents. Kai’s parents. He begged Yeonjun to not tell his parents just yet. It’s funny, really. Both of them, being said, are one of the university’s hottest couple. The whole neighborhood knows about them, it’s a shock Kai’s parents don’t know it yet.

The campus’ sweetheart is the troublemaker’s boyfriend. Yeonjun scoffed as he let the idea fade. That is also one of the reasons why Kai can’t tell his parents about them yet. Yeonjun’s got quite a bad reputation, involving in a lot of fights when he was younger.

But I changed. I changed for him, didn't I? But then again, even though Yeonjun changed for the better, there’s still a doubt lingering around his head that maybe, it’s not enough. Maybe, he can’t be good enough for Kai in his parents’ eyes.

I don’t care. It doesn’t matter. Despite all the doubts, Kai never failed to tell him that he’s enough. To make him feel that he’s enough and more. Kai never failed to show him every good thing about him and that, that is enough for Yeonjun to stay. To not give up on them.

Huening Kai is enough. What they have is enough. And Yeonjun couldn’t ask for more.

Yeonjun looked at his wristwatch, realizing that Kai hasn’t given him any signal yet. It’s quarter past midnight. They were supposed to meet outside Kai’s house, particularly outside Kai’s window, at twelve o’clock. Is something wrong?

Yeonjun’s grip on the rock he picked earlier became stronger as the minutes passed. The whole place is now dark, the only light source is the light illuminating from Kai’s room. But it still isn’t enough to see Yeonjun in the dark, which is perfect if ever someone from their house comes out without any warning, Yeonjun won’t be seen unless that someone intended to look at him

It’s been 30 minutes. What’s taking him so long? Growing worry, Yeonjun threw the rock he was holding at Kai’s window, hoping this time it opens to reveal the man he was looking for. Yeonjun heard a sound coming from the room but the window still did not open and Kai still did not show himself.

An hour. A whole hour past midnight passed and countless rocks were thrown before the said window opened, revealing Kai wearing a white pajama and yellow hoodie, rubbing his eyes using his right hand and the other hand holding a rabbit plushie.

The scenario answered all the worry and overthinking in Yeonjun’s head. He fell asleep.

“Hyung, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I just had a busy day and it was tiring and—"

Yeonjun gently ruffled the younger’s hair and laughed at his cute way of explaining. Kai looked panicked, after all, this was the first time he went out late and he even let his hyung wait for him in the cold.

While Kai was having a silent panic, Yeonjun just looked at him dearly like he was the most adorable thing in the world. Well, he actually is. For Yeonjun, Kai is the most adorable, beautiful, lovely, and every godly word out there to describe the boy in front of him, in the whole world, and beyond.

“Hyuka, it’s okay. I understand. Besides, isn’t it great that you were resting after a long and tiring day?”

Kai just pouted and reached for Yeonjun’s hand. My baby still feels guilty. Yeonjun intertwined their hands and pulled Kai out of the gate, going to a familiar track. Kai looked at him, confusion filling his eyes.

“Aren’t we supposed to go to your apartment, hyung?”

“Not anymore. As much as I want to spend time with you, I want you to go back fast and take a rest. So this will be quicker than expected, is that alright?”

Kai showed a timid smile and just nodded. On a normal basis, Kai wouldn’t agree because he wanted to spend all the time there is with him but he knows Yeonjun always means well, and now, he’s just right. Kai needs to rest.

They don’t need to worry though, they have the whole day tomorrow. They have forever ahead of them and tonight is just a part of it.

The silence filled the air as they walk along the grassy path, no one dared to talk. But it isn’t because they were awkward, it was the opposite. The silence was comforting and the atmosphere was sweet and light, just like a string of candy floss.

Maybe because they have each other’s company.

The walk was quite short so they arrived at the destination rather fast. Kai was the first one to climb the rope ladder, Yeonjun guiding him. The ladder leads to a treehouse, enough to fit them both and let them lay around with comfort.

“Hyung?”

“Yes?”

Yeonjun reached for the strawberry-shaped pillow they specially bought for this treehouse. He hugged it, placing his chin against the soft cotton while staring at Kai’s crystal eyes, giving him all the attention he can offer.

“I think I’m ready.”

What. Yeonjun was confused but didn’t mind, he continued giving his full attention to Kai, waiting for him to continue his words.

“I will introduce you to my parents.”

Without any warning, Yeonjun’s head who’s leaning towards the pillow earlier abruptly fell to the ground. It was slightly painful but Yeonjun paid no mind to the light sting. He just rose, face with clear confusion now, and looked directly into Kai’s eyes, looking for something.

He might be fooling around.

But Yeonjun knows better. Kai might love to kid most of the time but he isn’t the type to joke around something like this. He’s serious. And it would be a lie if Yeonjun said his insides weren’t exploding with joy because they are.

His heart is beating too fast, too loud, that Yeonjun fears it might be a ticking time bomb inside his rib cage and not his heart. His brain is fuzzy, all thoughts and fear earlier were thrown into inexistence. All he can think of right now is this moment, Kai in front of him, looking in love, and ready to introduce him to his parents.

Yeonjun was in cloud nine. After all the waiting, after the hiding, he will be introduced to Kai’s parents. This time not as Choi Yeonjun, the boy who fights a lot but as Choi Yeonjun, Huening Kai’s boyfriend, lover.

“Hyung? Are you not okay with it?”

Yeonjun just stared at Kai, mouth agape. He was still processing everything. What if this is a dream? What if I fell asleep while waiting for Kai to go out and meet me? Yeonjun has to make sure. He reached for Kai’s hand and placed them on his left cheek.

“Pinch me.”

“Hyung, just what are you saying?”

“Kai, I need to make sure this isn’t a dream.”

Kai chuckled at him and pinched his boyfriend’s cheek. Yeonjun hissed and reached for his cheek, rubbing it to ease the pain of Kai's pinching. Pain. It hurts. The pinch is real. It means this is real and not me imagining things.

“Hyung? I'm sorry, does it hurt—”

Yeonjun hugged Kai out of glee. He didn't mind the pain, he was happy, ecstatic even.

He looked at Kai, making sure it’s filled with love so that Kai can see how happy Yeonjun is right now. How in love he is right now with the man in front of him, nobody else.

“I’m so happy, Kai. Really happy.”

He moved his head closer, enough to make his forehead meet with Kai’s. He felt Kai closing his eyes and so, Yeonjun did as well. The moment was perfect. The silence is full of love. Their face facing each other, them under the bright stars, and sitting on the treehouse’s wooden floor which they built together.

Everything was perfect. And Yeonjun couldn’t ask for more.

“I am too, hyung. I am happy too.”

That put a smile on Yeonjun’s face. He opened his eyes again, moving away from Kai to see all his details. Kai was smiling back at him too, eyes reflecting the moonlight’s shine. Even without the moonlight and the stars tonight, Yeonjun knows Kai’s eyes would still gleam with thousand dancing diamonds.

He would always shine. Brighter each time. Always.

“Do you think they will like me?”

“They will, hyung. I know, they will.”

Yeonjun nodded. He was still worried but he will take Kai’s word for it. They will. Hopefully. He placed his hand on Kai’s right cheek, gently gliding his thumb on the younger’s soft, rosy skin.

“We won’t be a secret anymore…”

Yeonjun whispered. He loves the thought of them not hiding their relationship from anyone anymore. Just imagining, Yeonjun formally asking Kai’s parents to let him take Kai to dates brings joy and warmth to Yeonjun’s heart. It feels right, like home.

“I love you, hyung.”

It’s normal for Kai to say ‘I love yous’ here and there from time to time but the effect never lessened for Yeonjun. It became more and more endearing for him. He smiled at him and cupped his other cheek.

“I love you too, Kai. I love you most, always.”

Yeonjun leaned closer, sealing the gap between him and Kai. It felt electric when his lips touched with the younger's, it's like someone blew the post on the fifth street.

Kai's lips taste so sweet against his. His lips somehow signify his personality, sweet. It reminds Yeonjun of honey and strawberry on a cloudy day picnic.

The kiss was soft, slow, and chaste. It was comforting and full of love. It felt right, like home.

They stopped and catch each other’s breath, Yeonjun still looking at Kai’s eyes, not breaking contact. He loves them so much. He loves looking at them especially on these nights, when they escape.

Maybe that’s what Yeonjun will be missing. The midnight rendezvous. The secret meeting behind Kai’s parents. He will miss the excitement. Yet, he’s willing to give them all up if it means he can show the world that Kai is his boyfriend and he is his.

The excitement he feels when they secretly meet means nothing compared to the chance of having a stable and proper relationship with Kai, which they both deserve. Kai deserves to be shown to the world and Yeonjun wouldn’t hide him just for mere excitement.

Because that’s how much Yeonjun loves him. Yeonjun waited for him for minutes, hours, days, and months. He waited for this moment to come.

Yeonjun wouldn’t mind waiting for him all over again and more but now, he'll make sure to let Kai feel like he’s in the right place, like he's home.

The same way he makes me feel at home.
