Chapter 1: Day 1 & 2

Chapter Text

Day 1

Every spring break Rose comes back home, from her college in Wisconsin, so she is able to attend her family’s week long vacation. For years it’s been in the same place, some lake house her aunt and uncle have in Georgia. She was always excited to go because her favorite cousin, Kelley, is there. Kelley and Rose are the closest out of all their cousins and she has no idea why, they have a 4 year age difference so they don’t have much in common other than soccer. It would make sense if Kelley was closer to Rose’s older brother or sister but she never questioned it because Kelley was her best friend and she wouldn’t change any of it for the world.

Rose’s mother started to catch her up about everything that happened on that side of the family while she was gone, “I guess Kelley is bringing a some girl friend this year” her mom informed her

Rose thought twice about the use of the word ‘girl friend’. She knew Kelley was gay, and Kelley knew Rose was too. They were the only two that knew that about each other, so instantly her mind went to the fact that Kelley was totally lying and brought her girlfriend on the trip. Then again why didn’t Kelley tell her about any of this, they talked everyday.

Not only did Rose feel betrayed and anxious, but she was also scared for what was coming this week. She wouldn’t even be able to enjoy her time with Kelley because she would be too busy with her friend.

“Oh cool, sounds like fun” Rose said trying to not show anything she was feeling.

On top of this new information, Rose was stuck in front of someone on the plane that kept kicking her chair. Rose being the socially awkward person she is, didn’t say anything and let it happen the entire plane ride to Georgia. Once they got there, and found their rental car, her nerves heightened. The family pulled into the gravel drive way of the house that looked like it could fall apart any second. It wasn’t the nicest house on the block but never judge a book by it’s cover because the inside was amazing.

When you walk inside, it looks like it’s extremely modern. A fully updated kitchen, a new fireplace and tons of bedrooms and bathroom. On top of that the backyard was acres of grass, surrounded by trees, and a lake in the middle of the yard.

Rose walked through the door first and as she turned her head she saw Kelley sitting on the couch next to a blonde. The blonde girl, who Rose assumed was her friend, was taller than Kelley, she could tell even when they were sitting. When Kelley turned her attention to the door and spotted Rose she jumped off the couch and ran over, engulfing the girl in a huge hug.

“ROSIE!” she yelled, still hugging the girl, “I’ve missed you so much!” finally letting go.

“I’ve missed you too, Kel!” Rose said in an excited voice, wrapping her arms tightly around her cousin.

Kelley grabbed Rose’s hand and took her over to the couch, “Rose this is Emily, Emily this is Rose, my cousin. Also this years first round draft pick to no where other than the Spirit!” the blonde rises and smiles really soft..and what’s worse is that Rose knew exactly who she was once she saw Emily’s full face. She’s watch the two girls play in Washington, but Rose didn’t want to sound like a stalker so she wasn’t going to say anything.

“Hey, nice to finally meet you. Kelley wouldn’t shut up about how excited she was to see you again” Emily laughed almost as if she knew it would make Kelley defensive.

Rose’s cousin wrapped her in a side hug, “Okay now, Rose is my favorite person ever! Of course I’m going to be excited to see her”

Rose thought to herself, ‘favorite person that you forgot to inform that you’re in a relationship with Emily Sonnett…sure’

“Rude” Emily whispered and it made Rose giggle a bit

“Alright enough, let get you settled in Rosie” Kelley greeted her aunt and uncle, as Rose did the same, before grabbing her bag and walking to their shared room.

Kelley and Rose always stayed in the same room since they were little, it was a smaller sized room with bunk beds and a bathroom along with a window that you could sit outside of due to the roof being an overhang.

Kelley closed the door, “this is going to be the best week ever. I just know the two of you will become best friends and it’s perfect timing before season starts!” she said excitedly

Rose continued to unpack her stuff quietly as the blonde girl was talking to Kelley about something she had no idea about, it’s been not even an hour and she feels left out. Rose laid on her bed and went through her phone while the other girls talked, but it wasn’t for long as they were called out for dinner.

Another thing that Kelley and Rose always do is sit next to each other at dinner, tonight Kel had the “brilliant” idea of making Rose sit in the middle of the two so that Emily and her would be forced to talk to each other.

The rest of the table was in conversation about a relative Rose could care less about, so there was no one left to talk to except, “So what are you studying in college?” Emily asked her

“Um, sociology” Rose answer picking up more food to hurry and shove in her mouth so she didn’t have to talk again

“Oh no way, I studied the same” Emily said surprised setting down her fork for a spilt second

Rose felt Kelley elbow her in the arm, “ow, what the fuck” she turned to Kelley

“Sorry my elbow must have slipped” Kelley continued to eat

“So you excited to start playing in the pros?” Emily asked her another question

“Yeah” Rose really wasn’t giving much to the conversation because she really doesn’t want to talk to this girl.

Emily kinda got the hint and stopped talking which Rose now admits was even worse than when she was talking. Rose doesn’t exactly know why she’s so mad or why she doesn’t want to talk to Emily, but she feels bad because it’s obvious the blonde is trying hard to put effort into getting to know her.

It causes Rose to speak up, “so where do you play?” She acts like she has no idea who Emily is.

“Defense, center or wing. You’re a pretty talented midfielder from what I’ve seen” Emily tells her

“Thanks, I guess. It’s nice to go in hearing that from an experienced player” Rose looked at her for a second

Emily looked at her like she was crazy, “there is no need to be scared for this at all. We’re all so pumped to have you dude, you’re incredible.”

“Thanks” Rose shyly said

“Rose I’m not going to lie, I’ve seen you play a lot almost every game. You’re amazing and I’m serious when I say you’ll be a huge impact to this team” Rose was stuck on the fact that Emily, a professional soccer player, has watched her play almost every game. Then it made sense…Kelley watches her games.

“I’ve seen you play too, you’re really good” Rose compliments her

“Why, thank you. You have a very bright future miss Lavelle” Rose thought to herself, ‘how the fuck does she remember my last name’

The dinner finally finishes, after what felt like hours later. They end up going to bed pretty soon after as the kids have an early morning adventure the next day, which was all Kelley’s idea. As they got settled in to sleep Rose wondered where Emily was staying since the bunk beds were small. Her question was answered soon after her saw Kelley and Emily climb up to the top bunk together.

With Rose unable to fall asleep she thought about the blonde. No, not in that way…I mean Emily was dating Kelley, obviously she couldn’t think about her in that way. She was just thinking about someone as high up as Emily watches her play. Yeah Rose DEFINITELY didn’t think that way.

Day 2

Kelley’s alarm clock went off at 6:00am on the dot. Obviously it’s an alarm clock, but Rose could stop thinking about how much she wished alarm clocks didn’t work right about now.

“Rose get up.” Kelley told her as she climbed off the top bunk, “Sonnett” Kelley threw a shoe up there, “you too”

Emily groaned as Rose flipped Kelley off, “why was I stuck with you two…” neither of them were morning people

“Kelley only you would come up with he idea to go on a hike at 6:00 in the morning” Rose said finally getting up

“Yeah, because they have a beautiful trail across the street” Kelley pointed out

Emily and Rose both got dressed and headed out of the room 20 minutes after Kelley went out. It was one of the many cousins only activities of the week. Rose could tell Emily was like her, the blonde had not spoken one word since they’ve been up. Even when the group started walking she was refusing to talk.

Rose and Emily quickly fell to the back of the group, neither of their energy levels were high and they weren’t engaging with anyone, just barely making it along. Kelley led the group as she knew this trail like the back of her hand and she also just had the most alertness at 6:30 in the morning.

“So what are you 22?” Emily finally spoke up

“21, I turn 22 in May” Rose told her, “what about you?”

“Oh, dope. I’m 24, just two years younger than Kel.” they fell back into silence

“Do you have a boyfriend?” Emily asked. ‘What the fuck’ Rose thought, “or girlfriend?” Emily continued, “which ever it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not homophobic. I’m gay actually” the blonde panics and stops in her trail out of shock.

Rose lightly laughed before replying, “I’m not dating anyone, and you totally just outed yourself dude.” Emily looked at the girl with bulging eyes, “it’s fine, I’m definitely not a homophobe. I know about squirrel girl up there” Rose is pretty sure she heard a sigh of relief from Emily.

Rose didn’t want to confirm her sexuality yet, even though Emily just came out and said it. She assumed Kelley told Emily about it since she asked about a girlfriend possibility.

“She is squirrel, legit insane” Emily had no other choice but to agree

They continue to walk slowly, only falling further from the group.

“Are you guys like…?” Rose asked cautiously

“What?” She paused “…dating? Me and Kel?…no, no, not at all. We’re like siblings, no that’d be like way gross” the blonde says almost too defensively

Rose felt butterflies in her stomach, why? “oh okay, sorry I was just wondering. You guys seem close in that way is all”

“No, just two girls from Georgia playing on the same club team is all. Like legit, noting more” Emily informed her again rather quick

“Okay, I believe you” Rose said softly trying to get her to calm down

The hike came to an end without any other thing being asked. When they got back home Rose collapsed in her bed so fast and instantly fell asleep.

About an hour past before Rose was awaken from Kelley blasting music in her ear, she jumped up and yelled, “KELLEY!”

The older cousin stood straight up with her arms bolted to her sides, “Rosemary, it’s time to wake so we can go to the lake!”

“That was a terrible rhyme…” Emily whispered behind Rose’s cousin.

Kelley looked back at the girl, “really? I’ve been waiting to use that one…damn. Anyways Rose, time to get up we have more fun to attend.”

“I’m not sure if I want to go anywhere with you now..” She groaned rolling to the other side of the bed.

Kelley grabbed Rose’s arms and dragged her out of the bed. She finally complied and stood up by herself. Rose made her was to the bathroom with her swimsuit in hand. When she becomes more alert, the conversations with Emily process more from earlier on the hike.

Why was Emily so defensive about being single…?

Why did Emily ask if she was dating anyone?

Emily and Kelley aren’t dating…?

Kelley really just brought a friend to their vacation.

Was Emily trying to flirt with her the entire time?

Did she like it?

Rose finished changing and slipped on the over sized shirt she took with her, then proceeded to walked back into the bedroom. Emily sat on on the brunettes bed with her own suit in hand.

“Where’s Kel?” Rose asked trying to find her shoes

“She got thirsty” Emily said still siting on the bed

Rose could feel eyes follow her around as she still searched for her shoes, “Is there something you need?” She caught the girls eyes

“Oh um…” the blonde freezes for a second then pointed to the bathroom, “you done?” She asks

“Yeah” Rose responds trying to act like she didn’t catch Emily Sonnett checking her out, strike one.

Once Rose found her shoes she left the house and started walking to the lake. She set her phone on the table next to the lawn chair. She proceeded to lie down on the chair, taking her shirt off before of course. Rose was able to get 10 minutes of silence before the rest of the family was there.

She knew when Kelley and Emily were there because they were both loud as hell. She noticed that two girls dropped their things on the same table Rose did. Still caught up with the stare down from Emily earlier she kept her eyes closed. Kelley soon yelled at her, “Rose come in, it’s not like it’s possible for you to get tan” It makes the family laugh.

“Kelley I swear, you’re getting on my last nerve today.” She looked at the two girl in the water. Kelley was giving her sad puppy eyes and Emily was floating next to the other girl, you couldn’t see her mouth due to it being underwater but Rose could tell she was smiling due to the crinkles by her eyes, it happens every time she laughs-

No, Rose didn’t pay much attention to her. None at all actually, it’s just an observation…yeah.

Not wanting to seem like the party pooper, Rose got into the lake with the others. She kept her eyes glued to the ground as she walked into the water, but once again felt like someone’s eyes were melting her. She looks up again to catch Emily once again gazing at her, strike two.

Rose sends herself into the water, not hesitating because she can’t stand Emily’s eyes on her any longer. Once she emerges from the water she cooled down, why was she worked up from Emily staring at her in the first place…

They mess around for a bit, floating on rafts, pushing people off them, etc. Once Rose was warn down, so was Kelley and Emily so they all exited at the same time. Rose played it smart this time and stuck to the back of the group to avoid Emily eye sight at all cost, but she couldn’t help herself and glance at the girl in front of her. Damn did Emily look good from the back, she couldn’t help but stare at her broad shoulders. No, again Rose doesn’t- can’t have feelings for Emily, it’s her cousins best friend.

The three girls lay out on the lawn chairs, Rose claiming the one she was in before…Emily claiming the one next to her. All three of them were on their stomachs, Rose’s head was turned towards the rest of the family who were stuck in their own conversations.

The girl felt a kink in her neck which had made her turn her head, due to its discomfort. Only to her luck, when she turned her head she was greeted with the eyes of no one other than the Emily Sonnett, strike three.

Emily doesn’t turn her head, just looks Rose in the eyes. ‘Man does she look so huggable’, Rose thought to herself. The brunette gave her a weak smile, which prompted Emily to turn her head the opposite way.

What the fuck…Emily keeps giving her these looks but then acts like she’s done nothing. Rose has never been more confused and after this last strike Rose thought about how everything will probably be messed up between them now because that was so awkward.

Rose was right about that, Emily has been doing her absolute most to ignore Rose in any type of situation. She hadn’t spoken a word to the girl, looked at her, or even been within ten feet of the girl. At dinner that night Kelley sits in between the two, yet it’s somehow the closest Rose and Emily had been all night.

“Everything okay?” Mary asked Rose as she say her sister playing with the food on her plate

“Yeah. Everything’s good” Mary gave her a weird look, “I promise” Rose confirmed

But was everything good? Rose couldn’t help but notice she missed the attention Emily was giving her with each longly stare. Fuck, did Rose have feelings for her…?
