Work Text:
Just a few more nights, he thought; but it didn’t make the weariness he felt on his bones any lighter or easier to deal with.
Mark Hoffman was driving his car through the backstreets and alleys of the city to return to his second apartment, since his main home was under surveillance after his little… spree at the police station. His gloved hands gripped the steering wheel, the constant pattering of the rain on the roof of his car being the only sound in an otherwise silent ride. He only wanted to wash off and crawl under the covers to get a few hours of sleep before moving on to set another trap.
He was also excited to finally come home to you, hoping you were asleep at the moment so he could simply wrap himself around you and feel your warmth seep into his cold body. He released the grip he had on the wheel a little, and he rested his head back on the seat for a second. Just a few more blocks, and he’d be peeling off his grimy suit off of his body.
The rain didn’t give up, and as he parked his vehicle on the alley near his apartment building he knew he would get soaked as he ran all the way to his door. He picked up the files he had sitting on the passenger’s seat and stuffed them inside of his jacket, zipping it up to avoid getting them soaked with the rainfall as much as possible. He got out of his vehicle and closed the doors, before running down the sidewalk while staying off of the lights from the lamp posts lining the road. He ran into the lobby and shook off the water in his hair, before walking up the stairs to get to his floor, while he looked for the keys of his apartment door in his pockets.
Once he got to his floor, he quickly made his way to the very back of the hallway, finally pulling out his keys and opening the door.
“Mark? Is that you?” He heard your voice, clearly heavy with sleepiness, coming from the open door at the end of the hall and he smiled. Hoffman pulled the documents out of his jacket and left them on the coffee table in the living room before shedding his coat, hanging it by the entrance, and kicking off his boots as well.
“Yes, it’s me.” He replied, and he finally walked the hallway down to the bedroom. You were bundled up in the bedsheets, looking at him with half lidded eyes. “Evening, dear.”
“What time is it?” You asked, yawning, as he walked around the room shedding the rest of his outfit and gathering things to go in the shower.
“Last time I checked it was around 11.” The bathroom was in front of their bedroom, and he stood at the door to look back at you before he went inside.”Did you stay up waiting for me?”
You nodded before yawning again. “Tried to.” Hoffman chuckled and he went in the shower, and you covered yourself with the sheets again and nuzzled your face into the cold pillow to wait for him to come back. The sounds of the shower running and the rain outside were soothing, and slowly you began to drift off to sleep again.
It took some minutes, but Hoffman finally turned the shower off. As he was towelling himself as he walked to the room, he heard your soft snoring as you slept, and he simply chuckled to himself when he saw you sleeping again. He tossed on a pair of briefs and some checkered flannel pants to sleep, and he crawled onto the bed next to you.
“Hey baby.” He whispered, and you stirred awake once more. He placed a soft kiss on your temple. “You’re hogging all the blankets.”
“Oh, right.”
After a few moments of detangling you from the sheets, Hoffman was pressed up next to you under them. His presence was welcome, and you were thankful his warmth was still there next to you even after everything that had been going on in the past few years. You knew what he did, and he was aware of it, but the two of you rarely talked about it. You were just waiting for the day when the two of you would get out of the city once and for all.
“Do you want to tell me how your day was, or do you just want to sleep?” He was whispering near your ear now, and you moved back to press your back against his chest. He took the hint and wrapped his arms around your middle, moving the two of you so you were curled up against him.
“Just sleep.” The beard he hadn’t quite shaved yet scratched at the back of your neck, and you felt a shiver run up and down your spine. “Day was the same, so I’d rather just spend the night with you.”
He hummed and nodded, simply kissing the back of your head again before setting his own down on the pillow.
“Love you. Rest well.” You mumbled, and he smiled to himself. He didn’t really say it back, but you knew he did love you. His hug tightened a little and he kissed your shoulder this time, and that was enough for you. The peace he lacked all the time came to him now, and that was all he needed to push himself to finish what had been started by the others. Finally, he closed his eyes and inhaled the frutal smell of your hair, and that was enough to start lulling him to a light sleep, with the pattering of the rain against the outside still ringing in his ears.
