spoonful of sugar,
my cup is fuller when you’re there

“i thought you couldn’t cook?” applejack asks.
rainbow scoffs at the taller woman. “i’m not completely horrible, aj. i can make buttered noodles.”
“completely horrible would be quite the understatement, dontcha think?” applejack teases, laughing when rainbow gasps in mock offense.
rainbow thinks she could listen to applejack’s laugh forever.
and, you know, forever’s a long time, right? so that really says something, doesn’t it?
she thinks so.
applejack’s laugh is one of rainbow’s favorite sounds. it’s bright and fun and pretty. her eyes close and she has a grin on her face. it makes rainbow laugh, too. gives her all types of butterflies.
still, though, her fiancée just mocked her absolutely amazing cooking skills, so, in glorious revenge, rainbow steals her hat.
“dash!” applejack says, but there’s no real heat behind it.
rainbow just grins, hopping up on the island counter like she just won the lottery.
“what?” rainbow drags out the vowel, trying hard not to laugh at the glare applejack sends her.
“you think you’re funny.”
“you think you’re funny! my cooking isn’t that bad!”
applejack folds her arms and raises an eyebrow. “it isn’t?”
rainbow scoffs, “you’re just gonna insult my cooking in my own home?”
“ our home.”
rainbow smiles at that, “yeah. ours.”
letting her arms fall back to her sides, applejack smiles too.
applejack doesn’t think she’ll ever get tired of seeing rainbow smile like that.
the soft, smile that she saves only for applejack, the one that’s open. the one that makes her eyes sparkle. the one that’s vulnerable, but in a way that they only are with each other.
as applejack leans against the counter, both women’s eyes fall to the ring on rainbow’s left hand.
it’s a simple band with a gem that sparkles under the kitchen lights.
applejack proposed four months ago, under the tree they planted together during their freshman year.
that was before they started dating—junior year, what a time—they were still best friends at the time.
(who maybe had crushes on each other, but you know, they were young)
rainbow flexes her hand, tilting it to watch the light reflect off of the ring. “i’m really lucky to have you,” she says, quiet, but meaningful. “like, really lucky. you’re…you. i don’t know. words can’t describe you good enough.”
they’re looking into each other’s eyes, now. applejack can see the genuineness in rainbow’s eyes—and rainbow can see the open love in applejack’s eyes.
applejack wants to say, i feel the same way about you , but rainbow already knows that. she knows rainbow’s not looking for her to say that.
so, instead, she leans up and places a kiss on her cheek and whispers, “i love you.”
rainbow leans down, careful not to fall, and pecks applejack on the lips, “love you, too.”
it’s quiet for a moment, but it’s comfortable.
“i also love being taller than you,” rainbow grins.
“well, don’t get too used to it now, sugar,” applejack says, taking her hat back, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.
(said mischievous gleam, is not related to her statement, however.)
“what do you mean by—“ rainbow cuts herself off with a sharp shriek as applejack lifts her off the counter.
she wraps her legs around applejack’s midsection before reaching an arm to grab the bowl of buttered noodles, tightly clutching onto it with her arms loosely wrapped around applejack’s neck.
her braids fall around applejack’s shoulders when rainbow leans down. “i’m still taller! you lose.”
applejack rolls her eyes, “sure, dash, you win whatever game we were playing.”
rainbow laughs, victory in her eyes and applejack will let her have this one.
they stay like that for a few moments. a silent conversation between them, only interrupted by a few giggles.
then, rainbow unwraps herself from around applejack, still careful with the noodles, and drops onto the floor.
“you’re shorter than me, again,” applejack winks, taking a buttered noodle from the bowl.
“you’re mean.”
“says the mean one.”
rainbow sticks her tongue out at her. “actually, i like to think that the mean one is rarity, and not me.”
“it’s both of you.”
“it’s you, too.”
“is not.”
“is to!”
they go on like that, eventually calling a truce and going on about their day.
messing around like they’re still teens, smiling, laughing—
wedding planning…
—just enjoying each other’s company in beautiful domestic bliss.
they day eventually turns to night and rainbow lies in applejack’s arms. they lose themselves in pillow talk for a while before they both start to fall asleep.
they know some people seem to think that they wouldn’t get along—too competitive, too stubborn, too similar and different , but, neither can think of someone who gets them as well as they get each other.
they get each other, they help each other, they love each other. if soulmates exist, that’s what they are. simple and plain.
they are reminded everyday that this is forever.
and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
don’t you feel lucky,
that we can end a day like that
