Heaven could be better than this (I ain't convinced)

Summary:

Dean and Cas slow dance to a country song. No plot, just fluff.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

They sit in the kitchen under September skies, the absence of words not a hindrance to the intimacy they’ve fostered here.

Dean tucks into the soup he made, Castiel long since finished across from him. Cas just watches Dean with a hair trigger smile on his lips. Outside the dim kitchen, far beyond the glow of warm scented candles, Dean hears a rolling rumble and the persistent wash of rain against the window.

He’s sure it’s an awesome, violent storm raging in the night outside. But in their little bubble, only they exist in the halo of candlelight. The only sounds are a spoon clinking against a bowl and Cas’ humming to some country song on the radio. Dean adds another sound as he gets up, the quiet scuffle of shoes on the floor, the bowl forgotten on the table.

Cas never stops watching him through the motion, only glancing down at the hand Dean offers him when he comes to stand in front of him. He looks up at Dean.

“C’mon, sweetheart.”

Cas is confused, but he’s already taking Dean’s hand and letting his partner pull him to his feet.

“Dean, what…” Dean can’t help but smile because Cas is too, even though he clearly doesn’t know why they’re both standing.

“We’re dancing, idiot. Just roll with it.”

Cas seems to take it literally, as he rolls his eyes in response. But he’s still smiling, and the song is still playing, and the rain outside is still coming down as the candles burn and flicker.

Dean tangles his arms around Cas’ neck loosely, leading his partner into an easy sway as Cas pulls Dean against him by the waist. They look into each other’s eyes and Dean lets the music suffuse through him.

This is perfect. Come kiss me one more time. I couldn’t dream this up, even if I tried.

He tilts forward just enough to give Cas a peck on the cheek. Cas blushes.

You and me in this moment feels like magic, don’t it? I’m right where I want to be.

He is, isn’t he? Dean’s heart aches in the best way.

Everybody’s talking ‘bout heaven like they just can’t wait to go. Saying how it’s gonna be so good, so beautiful.

Dean watches Cas closely now, ensuring that the message is not lost on him.

Lying next to you, in this bed with you, I ain’t convinced. Cause I don’t know how, I don’t know how heaven, heaven could be better than this.

Cas is the one to kiss him this time, deep and impactful, and Dean feels shot through with emotion. He tries to think, reaching some intangible conclusion about faith, but he loses it happily to the feeling of Cas’ mouth on his.

This is heaven.

I swear you’re an angel, sent to this world. What did I do right to deserve you, girl?

Dean is still kissing Cas through this verse, but he tilts his head just right, tugs Cas’ hair just so, and he makes sure Cas knows just how much these lyrics resonate with him.

I could stay here forever . I’d be fine if we never had to even leave this room.

He breaks the kiss, gasping quietly as he leans his forehead against Cas’. Cas’ grip around Dean’s waist tightens.

Everybody’s talking ‘bout heaven like they just can’t wait to go. Sayin’ how it’s gonna be so good, so beautiful.

Lying next to you, in this bed with you, I ain’t convinced. Cause I don’t know how, I don’t know how heaven, heaven, could be better than this.

Cas moves his head until he’s buried in Dean’s shoulder. Dean feels tears well up when he feels Cas press a kiss there. He reciprocates, kissing the shell of Cas’ ear, sweeping a calloused hand along the back of his neck and up through his hair. Cas shivers against him.

Everybody’s talking ‘bout heaven like they just can’t wait to go. Sayin’ how it’s gonna be so good, so beautiful.

“I love you, Cas.” He whispers. Cas’ shivering has spread through every limb, and Dean feels it against the line of his body wherever he’s embracing Cas.

Lying next to you, in this bed with you, I ain’t convinced. Cause I don’t know how, I don’t know how heaven, heaven, could be better than this.

“I love you too, so much.” The cadence of Cas’ voice is barely perceptible, and the declaration is a hoarse murmur spoken against Dean’s collarbone. He pulls back reluctantly.

As he looks down at Cas, and Cas looks up at him, he realizes that this is it for them. He’s been to heaven, but Cas was the one who pulled him from hell. There’s no better salvation than in Cas’ arms.

As the song begins to fade, Dean can’t tell if it’s him or the song who speaks the final lyrics. He’s focused wholly on leaning in and drawing Cas up to meet him, tasting heaven when they come together.

I swear this is perfect. Come kiss me one more time.

Notes:

Song is "Heaven" by Kane Brown. Author has been listening to nothing but country for a few weeks and had to get rid of a DeanCas brain worm. Still working on some multi-chapter fics for y'all, but I want to make it to at least five chapters for the biggest ones before I post, just so I can give myself a break if I don't write for a while. Comments and kudos are, as always, appreciated.
