Work Text:

“kacchan!” izuku whined, running to keep up with katuski, because despite them being damn near the same height katsuki had always been so much faster.

“keep up izuku!” katsuki chuckled, slowing down for the boy, “jeez.”

they were both quirkless children, finding comfort in the fact that they were the same.

they weren’t different from each other, and they’d never be. and they knew that. they knew that they were safe together.

they found themselves at the park that they spent most of their time at. they didn’t like being at home, as their parents hated the fact that they were both quirkless.

their parents wanted strong kids, they wanted warriors. and sadly, izuku and katsuki weren’t that. god, they weren’t even close.

“c’mon zuzu!” katuski called, reaching his arm out to pull izuku onto the jungle gym ball thing.

“ugh, i’m trying kacchan,” but izuku’s legs were just too short, so katuski had to get down and give him a boost.

“izuku, you have to learn how to get up here by yourself, i’m not always gonna be here to help you.”

“what? kacchan where are you going?”

“no where right now, but what if something happens someday? then how will you get up here?”

“i would never let something happen to you kacchan! ever!”

“alright izuku, i get it,” katuski smiled.

“do you wanna play heroes?” they both asked in unison, they giggled and then started playing.

they played until the street lights went on and then it was time for them to go home.

“i had fun zuzu.”

“me too kacchan.”

“wanna play again tomorrow?”

“sure.”

-

they were eight now, and it was izuku’s birthday party.

no one showed up, and the boys should’ve known deep down that this would’ve happened.

no one talked to them at school. no one made an effort to eat lunch with them, or play with them when they were on the playground.

it was okay though, they were used to it. they knew they were different and they didn’t care. as long as they had each other then it would all be fine.

that’s what they told themselves, and they believed it too.

“hey zuku, blow out your candles,” katsuki’s voice strained, he was holding back tears, trying his hardest to save the happy mood that was quickly crashing.

izuku, on the other hand, was sobbing. he was so upset that no one, no one other than katsuki showed up to his party. he invited the whole class! and not one person showed up.

he was heartbroken.

“c’mon izuku, please don’t be sad,” katuski was trying hard not to cry at the sight of his best friend breaking down.

“k- kacchan, no one came! i- i invited everyone!” izuku tried to look up at katuski but his eyes were blurry and his heart hurt and he just wanted to take a nap.

“i know zuzu, but it’s me and you, okay? it’s me and you against all of them. it always has been and it always will be.” katuski smiled at izuku as he rubbed his friend’s head.

“really kacchan- you mean that for real?”

“of course i do.”

and from that day on it was them against the world, forever and always.

-

the boys had grown into tall thirteen year olds.

they were content in their life together.

they thought they were in love. they thought that with their whole hearts, but they were only thirteen of course. they didn’t really know what love was.

right?

“izuku?” katuski called, knocking on izuku’s bedroom door.

“come in kacchan,” izuku was smiling, stuffing a note into his dresser drawer then getting up to go give katuski a hug.

“are you ready to go?” katuski asked and izuku nodded, going to get his wallet and his key so he could lock his bedroom door behind him.

their parents were accepting, as the boys had known each other since they were kids. their parents didn’t care about their sexualities, and they stopped caring that they were quirkless.

“bye mom!” izuku called out as he shut the front door behind him and ran to catch up with katuski.

just like back then.

they went to a fair, something basic for a first date. but katuski was nervous, he’d never planned a date before and if he was being honest this was the first thing he could find.

“so this is the super secret surprise date idea that you’ve been telling me about?” izuku chuckled as he went to grab katuski’s hand that was sweating just a bit too much.

“well yeah, do you not like it?” katuski asked, nervous.

“no no, it’s not that kacchan! i love being here with you, there’s no where else i’d rather be.”

god izuku was such a sap.

the boys went around everywhere, trying so many new foods. they went to the photo booth and on the bumper cars. they went on the mary go round and last but not least to the farris wheel, just before the fair closed for the night.

“wow kacchan! isn’t it so pretty up here,” izuku had his arms and legs outstretched, as if he could fly.

he was so adorable.

“you’re so adorable.”

“what kacchan?”

“you’re adorable, izuku. you are and you always have been and i can’t believe that you’re in my life. i feel so lucky to have you and i know that i’m dumb. and i know that we’re only thirteen, and i love you. izuku i really
love you, for real.”

and izuku was speechless, and then he was crying and katuski was kissing him and the fireworks were going off and then they fell.

and they hit the ground.

and the last thing they heard were screams.

-

and now katuski was eighty, and in his hand was a note. it had izuku’s handwriting on it.

inko gave it to him after the accident, she said, “read it when you’re ready katuski. just know he loved you.”

and he had never been ready. he never felt good enough to read the note.

but that day, the 67th anniversary of izuku’s death, he felt ready. well, as ready as he’d ever be.

dear kacchan,

it’s izuku here, but i’m sure you knew that.

when you asked me out the other day i was so happy! i’ve loved you ever since you told me that it was you and me against the world that day on my birthday. do you remember that? god that feels like so long ago.

i know that this might be premature, but i want to spend the rest of my days with you kacchan! i want to get married and adopt a cat with you. and i know that we’re young, but i know how i feel. and i hope you feel the same.

i love you kacchan, and just like you said, it’s me and you against the world. forever and always.

love, izuku <3

“i miss you zuzu,” katsuki cried into the air. and he felt it in his heart that izuku missed him too.
