Work Text:
The last colour Bren Aldric Ermendrud sees is red; the colour of the flames destroying his family, his life, his mind.
The world is grey after that. The new companions he meets are dazzlingly diverse, alive and sparkling, but never colorful to him. He never sees them as they are. Not truly.
It changes in Hupperdook. In a tavern that smells like beer and gunpowder. He's had too much to drink and suddenly he's dancing. Dancing with the beautiful tiefling who sparkles even in grey tones.
He closes his eyes and thinks of a dance shared with a love from long ago. When the the grass was green, her hair blonde, his own red. His heart flutters. The sky had been blue.
Blue. It's what he sees when he opens his eyes. Her hand is blue, wrapping around his own grey one, the white of her teeth is now sharply contrasting against blue skin. She's smiling. His heart flutters again.
She's tucking him in bed when he finally finds the words. "You are blue". He stammers. She confirms, smiles and doesn't understand.
The first colour Caleb Widogast sees is blue.
