Work Text:

the colourful fireworks illuminated the dark, starry night sky, and the faces of the agency members, as well as the park scenery. they were beautiful in the sense of the world, bright bangs of colour illuminating everything around them, fading much too quickly than anyone really wanted. It reminded Kunikida of Life and Death.

“when i go out, i’d like to go out just as beautifully.” dazai whispers, a comment possibly meant only for himself, but kunikida was not the only one that had heard. the implications of the comment made kunikida’s stomach drop, as often as he reprimanded dazai for his ‘attempts’, at the end of the day, kunikida did not want his friend to die. could they even truly be friends if kunikida wished death upon him? kunikida’s gut feeling, and his personal ideal’s told him no.

atsushi turned his head to face dazai, the green and purple fireworks in front of him casting a gentle glow across his silver hair, highlighting the dark strand. “i’d rather if you didn’t go at all.” he says, words gentle, full of pure intent.

kunikida nodded, not making an effort to look at dazai. “i agree with the brat.” kunikida thoughtly deeply about what he should say next, something to encourage the other to keep living.

“i still need to see you when you’re old.” shit. that was not the kind of comment he had been going for, but it elicited a laugh out of atsushi, and dazai smiled a little.

“alright you two, i don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon, not without your permission at least.” he smirks at the final comment, turning his attention back to the fireworks.
