W-where are we? – Sayori said in a scared tone
The floor was unusually wet, so she stands up, then she realized in what situation she was
A strange buzzing that resounded across the room filled her ears, then when her eyes watched the roof, instead of watching the blue roof of Monika’s room, instead was a yellow and decaying roof.
And that details were the most normal in that place, a place that she never saw in her life before.
The situation was too weird so she thought that probably that was another nightmare for eating too many cookies after dinner, like that nightmare when she dreamed about being in a land of evil and scary cookies who loved to eat human flesh (she didn’t eat cookies for a week after that)
She looked around noticing more and more out of place details, like the flickering lights or shadows at the distance, then she tried to pinch herself in the neck to make sure it was a nightmare
The pain she felt in the neck confirmed that wasn’t a nightmare, that was something real , a reak situation and she wasn’t able to escape.
For a moment, she felt alone, alone in this new and unknown world, that feeling was too overwhelming for her, she wanted to scream but from her mouth, no sound was able to escape.
Her body started to tremble, her first reaction after fully realizing he was no longer in the real world, was looking for her friends ; probably Monika, Yuri or probably but unlikely Natsuki would know what to do in such a situation, sadly none of her friends was near of her.
She decided to start looking for them, even if she didn’t understand what was happening or how he ended in that place, she had to be brave for them
After some minutes of walking finally, she found her friends, but they weren’t awake, they were unconscious on the floor like they were sleeping, at least she wasn’t alone anymore, but she was about to lose her mind since that situation was weird and strange
-Girls…wake up, NOW¡ - Sayori screamed, getting more nervous minute by minute with a scared expression
Sayori was visibly in panic, none of the girls was reacting to her desperate screams, she grabbed Monika by the shoulders and started shaking her
-Please…WAKE UP ¡ -
For a couple of minutes, Sayori shakes the unconscious body of Monika with all her forces but that wasn’t working, Monika still sleeping and didn’t give any sign of awakening very soon.
Then Sayori started to think that maybe, they were already dead, and that’s why they weren’t reacting to her desperate voice.
At that moment Monika waked up, she was sleeping on her side so instead of watching the yellow ceiling, the first thing she noticed was how Sayori was nervous, sitting with her back leaning against a yellow wall.
And the sound, the damn buzzing sound.
From the first moment, she already knows that she was no longer at home, that took her by surprise, she looked to her new environment and breathing calmly, she gets up
-Sayori, are you fine? - Monika asked with a worried voice
-Monika? I thought you were …. d-dead– said Sayori while getting up
Then Sayori pointed to the bodies of Yuri and Natsuki, who still did not open their eyes and were still asleep, at least now 2 of the 4 girls of the literature club was awake, the 2 of them scouted the place
That place looked like an old and empty office building, something from the 80s or 90s, the yellow walls were repeated a lot, making that place a giant maze, a maze when the 4 girls now were trapped and escaping was not an easy task
- At least we are not in hell or something – Sayori said, trying her best to stay positive, to be optimistic in a weird and unknown situation like this, but she was about to break, the fear to the unknown, the suddenness of the situation was too much for her, she was sweating a lot, putting her hands to her head trying to process all of that.
Monika was handling the situation a bit better, after all, managing the Literature Club, being in the debate club and plenty of reading gived her a lot of experience handling sudden situations and staying calm no matter how hard or weird the situation would be, she breathed calmly and said to herself that for the sake for the Literature club, she had to appear calm and had to help the girls to escape, no matter how, still, the actual situation didn’t have any sense to her.
-Maybe somebody is playing us an elaborated joke. I mean, it’s illogical that we slept in one place and then we waked up in another one – Monika said in a serious tone, making her best effort to don’t start appearing scared, because if she panicked, then Sayori would follow.
Of course, she wasn’t believing any of that, but she didn’t want to accept it, to accept that they were trapped in a sort of maze, she was after all a logical person who didn’t believe anything related to magic or paranormal stuff.
-M-Monika, I am sure this is n-not a dream or a nightmare or…whatever – Sayori added while trembling
Of course, nothing of all of this had a logical explanation, the only thing that Monika and Sayori had it clear, was that both were still alive, and trying to stay calm would help both to think of a plan to escape from this maze
Still, the fact that Yuri and Natsuki weren’t awake was a real concern, then Monika put her finger in Yuri’s neck, then in Natsuki neck , with the purpose of checking the vital signs
-At least they are alive, but not waking up yet – Monika said, breathing a bit calmer – Maybe we just have to wait a bit , I hope they will wake up soon so we can think together in a way to handle this –
-Probably is the best to do –
Then they decided to wait until Yuri and Natsuki waked up, hopefully, it wouldn’t be long before that, time passed and then after 1 hour that felt like an eternity, Natsuki opened her eyes, at a difference of Sayori who take some time to finally start screaming and Monika who was trying to stay calm, she started to panic at the first second she realized that something wasn’t right.
-Where we are ?? – Natsuki said, who visibly was scared
-I don’t know, but we are not in my house anymore- Monika replied
The last thing Natsuki remembered, was that they were all sleeping in Monika’s room in sleeping bags and now she was in another place, way too different, at least, she wasn’t alone, Monika and Sayori were too.
They decided to wait a bit more, 1 hour happened, but Yuri didn’t wake up yet, and girls were starting to get worried, and to make worse the situation, a part of the ceilings fall near Natsuki, almost hitting her in the head, making her even more scared.
-I am going to check Yuri- said Monika and she put a finger on her neck to check her vitals – She is still alive, but she is sleeping, and for some reason, she is not waking up yet
-I hope she awake soon- Sayori said
-Me too Sayori but, we must think what are we going to do, we can’t be here forever, and we already know we are not in a dream or nightmare or…well, this is real- said Monika trying to be calm because she was getting scared too
But Yuri still sleeping, so Monika asked Sayori to help her carrying Yuri, so Monika grabbed one arm of Yuri and Sayori another and then, they advanced a bit, at a slow pace but all of them together, hoping to find an exit as soon as possible
After a while of walking through the maze, watching even more yellow walls, and the buzzing sound that seems endless like the walls, they stopped to rest a bit, Monika and Sayori were getting tired of carrying Yuri, so they left her for some minutes in the floor
-Are you sure we can escape the maze, Monika? – Natsuki asked
Looked like Natsuki was losing the little hope she had, and Sayori was scared, after all, the backrooms can take a huge toll on your sanity
-Listen, I know this situation looks bad, but is nothing we can handle, after all, we are going to survive this, we are strong, we can do this – Monika said, doing her best to try and cheer the girls; if they lost all the little hope they had, then it would be the end
Sayori and Natsuki after hearing the words appear to be a bit calmer and with a bit more hope in them.
But the tiny amount of hope that they have disappeared when they started to hear a sound louder than the buzzing sound, a lot of growls that sounded near of them, that day was getting worse and even worse
-Did you hear that, Monika? - Natsuki asked
-Yeah, we better must hurry and try to find an exit – replied Monika
-That’s not g-good - said Sayori
Then, like out of a nightmare 3 tall creatures with the appearance of dogs but more deformed and scarier appeared in front of the girls growling very aggressive .
Sayori and Natsuki lost what little calm they had left and started running trying to save themselves, 2 of the 3 creatures went after them, the last remaining one looked at Monika, with a wide smile, like knowing that founded an excellent prey, things didn’t look well.
Monika who already lost all her composure, and sweating a lot tried for the last time to wake up Yuri, but she didn’t open her eyes, no matter what, looked like it was the end for her and Yuri, they would never escape.
-¡ Get away, get away¡- Monika yell at the creature, really scared, about to start crying, after all, every human has a breaking point, and she wasn’t an exception.
That creature started approaching her slowly, like knowing that she didn’t have even a tiny chance of defending herself, but it focused too much on her, that didn’t notice that a man approached running to the creature, Monika saw him too but didn’t pay any attention thinking that probably was just a hallucination that her desperate mind created and she was already dying.
But that wasn’t a hallucination, that man was real , and then he jumped over the creature and with a sharp military knife in his left-hand stab the creature, opening a deep wound on it, blood started pouring out of the creature.
-¡Die ¡ - that man screamed with an angry face filled with rage, hatred, and sadness, and after yelling he stabbed the creature many times, the creature tried to counterattack, to take the menace that man was for it, but the pain was overwhelming and it didn’t allow the creature to defend itself.
Seconds passed and the creature, in a last and desperate try, with all his remaining strength, suddenly turned around and make him fall to the ground, then the creature used his claws against him, his t-shirt and makeshift armor become only rags after the creature viciously wounded him, then with a powerful kick launched him against the yellow wall, leaving him unconscious and wounded.
In the meantime, Monika was searching in Yuri pockets, of course, the smarter movement was taking advantage of the situation and escaping from the fight, to save herself and nothing else, but she knows that that creature was really powerful, that man was only a distraction for the creature, even if she started running eventually the creature would catch her and her fate would be to die, and she wasn’t planning to leave Yuri, in the end, she found a lighter and a can of perfume in Yuri pockets, but no knives, nothing that she can’t use to defend herself
Then she did a last effort to calm herself, to remind herself that she was a leader, that title of leader of the Literature Club, the fame that she had in her school, that wasn’t for nothing, give up wasn’t an option
Then the solution becomes clear, she quickly holds in one hand the lighter and in the another the can of perfume, at that moment after the creature already launched the man against the wall, then it looked at Monika
But, unlike before, that creature no longer had all its strength, the creature had deep wounds in the back and it was losing blood at a quick pace, it could barely stand, even so, the creature wasn’t giving up on devouring Monika, so it growled and charged at her
But this time, Monika was ready, and when the creature was near her she jumped, dodging the creature, the creature who wasn’t able to coordinate after losing so much blood, crashed at a wall making more ceilings falling, then Monika saw the deep wounds that the creature had, and with a hand in the lighter and another in the can of perfume, used the perfume hoping that would work against the creature.
The jet of perfume went through the lighter, becoming in a burst of fire that impacted in the deep wounds, making it growl in pain, she kept spraying and spraying until the creature collapsed after so much pain
Was it dead? that wasn’t important for Monika, the only thing that matter now for her was the creature was no longer a threat for her or her friends.
-F-finally- said Monika, still shaking, she was so near to death, so close to suffering a violent and painful death being devoured alive, she showed courage, but nothing of that would be possible if that man didn’t appear to weaken the creature
Then she heard a voice behind her
-M-Monika? –
Monika hearing that voice, immediately turned around to see who it was, to her surprise when she saw that Yuri had finally woken up.
Yuri was still a bit dizzy after being unconscious for a long time on the floor.
-Yuri, are you fine? - said Monika, being happy of realizing that Yuri wasn’t dead
-I am not sure - replied Yuri
Then, she realized too that she wasn’t in Monika house anymore, then she began to panic, Monika quickly explained to her that they were in a sort of maze and the rest of the little information she had
After that, she went to see that man who was unconscious, Yuri was about to have a panic attack, but then she saw the unconscious man too
-¡Isaac ¡ - screamed Monika watching how badly wounded the creature left him after he charged against the creature to defend Monika and Yuri from a certain death
-Do you know him? - asked Yuri
-If it wasn’t for him, we would be already dead and yeah, I know him, it’s a long story – replied Monika–
She used to talk with Isaac when she was trying to learn Spanish because she wanted a new challenge, something hard enough to learn, but even for her learning Spanish was more difficult than expected; then one day when she was talking with Sayori about how she was trying to learn Spanish, Sayori told her about a friend who was a native speaker and that he could also speak English
And that’s how she knows that man on the floor, with a lot of heavy wounds and scratches, was Isaac; but it looked way more different than before, thinner, with a stiffer expression, something about him was different.
Monika approached Isaac to try to help him, since it wasn’t hard to see that without some help he would die since he had a lot of horrible injuries and blood was staining the floor, then she approached him but she didn’t expect what was about to happen
Instead of recognizing her or Yuri, he looked at her like she was someone unknown, someone to fear, then even with the great number of injuries he quickly stands up
-Who are you? What do you want? – he screamed with a scared expression
-I-Isaac? – said Monika a bit scared, she didn’t expect him to act in that way
For a moment she thought maybe she make a mistake, maybe he wasn’t Isaac, but his voice was the same as she remembered, it was the same dark hair, the same black eyes, and that skin that wasn’t common in Japan since Latin people barely was present in the country
Why he was acting so hostile with them?
-How do you know my name? – said Isaac while quickly looking for his knife to defend himself but it was too far from him, he dropped it when the monster launched him against the wall
-It's me, Monika…we used to talk a lot online…Spanish classes..remember? – Monika said
-I don’t believe you…. your hair is coral brown now and her hair is purple … that’s not the hair color that I remember -
Monika didn’t know what to said but then she watched Yuri's hair and noticed it was purple, instead of blonde hair.
For sure that wasn’t a normal hair color (after all purple hair are not natural in the real world where they lived), and now Yuri’s hair was different
Probably her usual black hair suffered a similar change too
While she was thinking about that, he quickly draws a pistol from his holster and aimed with a firm grip at Monika.
If she didn’t convince him quickly that they were friends and not enemies, then the last thing she would see would be the pistol opening fire toward her …
