Chapter 1: Falling Baby Fangs

Chapter Text

Monday

Just like any other day, she jumps out of bed immediately after hearing the sound of her loud alarm. She slapped the screaming clock demon making the thing faint. Others might find Mondays taxing but to Luz Noceda, a witch in training in the demon realm, she wouldn't miss a day learning about magic.

After changing into a fresh set of clothes AKA hexside’s school uniform, Luz went downstairs to meet Eda and King, Eda casually sitting on the coach with her feet up the table, nonchalantly drinking from one of her old mugs that said number 1# mom boss girl.

Spotting her apprentice, Eda smirked behind her mug, "Morning kid, how’s your sleep?”

“A little bit better than last time”, Luz gave Eda a small smile as a follow up. Thinking about the events of the big portal day, Eda is still not entirely convinced that Luz is okay by her demeanor, but the old witch didn’t want to pry too much and press her apprentice’s matters further, if Luz wanted to talk to her she would. She savored a sip again before speaking, “want me to give you a ride?", Eda said in between slurps, looking above her head to where Owlbert was nesting and cooing.

"Nah, Amity is gonna pick me up today,'' with that, Luz made her way across the witch sitting on the couch and towards the fridge.

King was on the kitchen table happily eating away what seemed to be paincakes, powdered atop with pixie dust. At the side of the little furball were fearpops, a winged version of regular cake pops she had come to love in the human realm, the pops would scream in fear knowing if they were about to be devoured. King didn't mind the screaming though, he just chomped through two of them.

They celebrated Amity's 15th birthday a couple days ago, these were the leftovers from the cake Willow and Gus brought over. Luz smiled at the thought that her cotton candied hair goddess was amazed and enthusiastic about being thrown a surprise party, though she did find it weird that Willow and Gus kept insisting to celebrate before her birthday, not on her actual birthday.

Regardless, the party was well-taken and the events of the celebration were fun. It was a good refresher before preparing herself for the big portal day, she met her mom again and made a new friend named Vee. She still needed to think over what she'll do about the portal and her promise. But right now Luz had to pursue her education here in the Boiling Isles. With a glance at the clock and the thought that her friends might be waiting for her at the entrance, she quickly grabbed two griffin egg sandwiches from the fridge. Luz hurried her actions of going outside upon hearing a hooty scream.

"Luz! Your friend is here HOOT HOOT".

She opened the door expecting her awesome girlfriend, she was ready to launch and give her a bone crushing early morning hug but was stopped at her tracks seeing Willow with her Palisman Clover in front of the Owl House.

A little bit confused, Luz gave Willow a dazed look before giving her a wave.

"Good morning Willow", Luz said cheerfully.

"Morning Luz," her friend said with a smile. "Hop on", Willow patted the empty space behind her staff. "We'll talk during the flight", with that affirmation Luz happily sat behind her friend. They took flight off the ground as soon as Luz sat down.

"So" Luz said, kicking the air with her feet, as they were flying to hexide.

"Hmm?" Willow hummed, she kept her eyes forward for the most part, she was navigating clover.

"How come you're the one picking me up this time?"

"Amity asked me to, she said she won't be attending the first period", Willow took a quick glance to check on her friend.

“And she didn't want you to be late waiting for her”. The plant witch gave Luz an assuring smile before turning her head back to see where they were going.

Okay now Luz was really confused, Amity Blight not early for school? This was new.

Although Luz had her fair share of tardiness, the first time around. It was to be expected being new to the isles, she garnered a hefty amount of horrible sleeping patterns. Luz was not used to the night critters watching her sleep from the window. A chill went down her spine, remembering the memory of one of the critters looking at her with glowing blood red eyes, in the dead of the night. The scrapping sounds of glass became evident if she made eye contact with those red-eyed critters. It scared her most nights. But now that she learnt some usable spells,  she had gained courage to investigate the window scrapers. Luz discovered that the critters were actually just curious little bug demons that didn't seem to pose any threats, with that she learnt to sleep through the stares and noises.

Hexside was now coming into view, Willow looked behind her back again to check on Luz, the brunette girl was still lost in her own thoughts.

"Ahm" Willow let out a fake clearing of her voice.

"Sorry Willow", Luz scratched behind her back. "I just find it weird that Amity would be late, let alone skip the first period", she said, while making a strained smile. "I'm just kinda concerned that's all, is she okay?"

Willow made a contemplated face. Thinking about what she should say. Willow would inform Luz about Amity’s dilema, but it wasn't her place to tell Luz what's going on with Amity, if Amity wanted Luz to know she would definitely tell her in her own time, the witch is sure of that.

"How about you talk to her at lunch, she'll be there for sure", with that Luz noded and gave Willow a hopeful smile. They landed at the front entrance of Hexside, Gus waiting at the side of the pillar. The young illusionist saw the two landed and approached them.

Luz pulled her friends into a group hug before they entered the school together. They went their separate ways towards their respective classes, Luz’s mind clouded with worry on what could be going on with her Amity.

--------------------------------------------

‘See you guys at lunch, thx for the favor btw, i owe you one Willow’

‘You know the more you avoid her , the more worried she gets.’

‘I know, I’m  just not ready to have that conversation with her yet.’

‘Alright, were heading to our classes now, I’ll see you at lunch Amity :)’

With that Amity turned off her scroll and tossed it to the otherside of her bed.

She winced from the spike of pain that quickly shot through her mouth. It felt like someone hammered two heavy nails into the gums of her canines. With the traverse ache in her mouth preventing her from having any deep sleep, she felt drowsy this morning. She looked at the clock at her bedside table. Yep, Amity will surely miss her first class, but in her defence her entire mouth was waging a war against her.

A set of footsteps can be heard through her door and a knock followed. Much to Amity’s annoyance, she couldn’t be bothered to stand up and open the door right now. After a few more impatient knocks, Emira busted the door open, holding a bowl of blood apples. Emira looked bothered at first but her expression changed when she heard Amity whimpering in pain, the lilac-haired witch was just moving her head to the side of her pillow to face the direction where her siblings came in, yet the small actions caused an attack of pain, shot through her growing fangs. Emira and Edric both furrowed their brows, expressing concern over the whimpering.

Edric followed behind Emira, holding a cup of appleblood, he peeked through the door, worry relevant on his face as he saw his younger sister scrunching up her face, mewling from gum pain bestowed upon her from their ever so powerful ancestors. He was sorta thankful that he didn’t inherit those features from their ascendant.

“Hey Mittens, we brought you some blood apples and apple blood”, Emira said as they approached their younger sister. Amity groaned in response and moved her head to face the ceiling instead of the twins. With a sigh, she sat up from bed to face her sister again, debating if she wanted to open her mouth to speak or just have it completely shut to avoid any unnecessary pain from spiking again. Ghost on the other hand was witnessing the distress of their owner, the white cat palisman jumped from its spot at the bottom of the bed and settled on Amity’s lap in an attempt to comfort, nuzzling their head on it’s owner’s hands. Amity appreciated the comfort and passed a long breath through her nose, in an attempt to convince her brain to stop focusing on the pain, she  looked up to face her concerned siblings, she was about to speak but was cut off.

“Look, I would call me and Emira lucky, since we didn’t really get to experience whatever pain you're going through right now”, Edric started to converse. Emira followed “But, we're here to help whenever you need us”, they both gave their younger sister a reassuring smile.

Amity is grateful for the gesture, her relationship with her siblings has come a long way, Despite the ever so minor pranks that occur traditionally every week, she wouldn’t trade them for anybody.

Even with forethought of the agony, Amity manages to get some words out, careful not to brush any force on her growing fangs.

“Thenks guysh, am sowwy abou gedting yoz late doe”, she attempted to smile but stopped mid motion as she flinched from the sting ever so evident on her gums.

Emira took the apple blood from Edric and set both the bowl and the cup beside her sister's bedside table.

“Potato potata, Mittens”, she waved her hands. “It’s an excuse to skip the first period” she closed her eyes and shrugged.

“Why wouldn’t we take the opportunity?” Edric continued, as he made his way to his sister's mirror to sit down and check his face if he was still pristine and handsome.

“What the heck is a potata?” Amity thought. Amity eyed on the blood apples, hesitant if she wanted to take a bite, she didn’t really need to right? Yep she’s not really that hungry, it's definitely not the pain that's fogging her hunger. Or the fact that she just doesn’t have the appetite of eating a whole bowl of them again, she had eaten plenty from yesterday, Amity was getting sick of the taste. Emira just watched her sister who crossed her arms, deep in thought, Amity's line of thinking broke when her stomach started to make a sound, it demanded fuel.

“I weally dun like eading dem'', Amity exasperated a sigh.

“Welp Mittens, you have limited food choices”, Emira sat at the edge of her sister’s bed.

“It’s either that or painfully eating a paincakes”, she turned her head to face Amity.

"And I don’t really find you crying from eating paincakes entertaining”. She gave Amity a soft expression, Amity attempted a smile again and was about to thank her sister, until she saw one of the corners of Emira’s lips maliciously rise.

”Besides, changing your alarm to rick roll you is way funnier”, Emira stuck out her tongue. Amity’s neutral smile furrowed into an annoyed expression. Emira and Edric chuckled to their sister’s displeasure.

Amity picked up the cup of apple blood from the table and started sipping. She didn’t really like that it made her jittery everytime she drank it, but those were one of the countermeasures for the pain that came with her growing fangs. She hummed as the strain in her mouth began to numb with every sip she took. She finished the cup, setting it back at her bedside table. Although she didn’t have an appetite for them, she was hungry, so she picked up the bowl of blood apples and started munching on it. She kept checking on the bitten part of the apple, seeing fang marks at the side of each bite. Her ever so gracious ancestors bestowed upon her the features of a powerful high-status witch, yet if she knew it was gonna be this painful she would have bargained with her gene pool.

Sensing their owner was now a little bit at ease, Ghost settled back to their previous position near the footboard. Emira leaned back at the bed a little, her forearms supporting her position, “you’re gonna make your girlfriend worry more if you miss the second period’.

Amity finished her blood apple, leaving the core and putting it back in the bowl. She knew where this conversation was going, Amity looked at her sister with a tight lipped smile that screamed "finish that thought I dare you".

Edric unafraid continued after Emira. He was staring at Amity now, “you think she would wanna let you - “ Edric pointed to a spot on his mouth on the spot where a fang was supposed to grow out.

Amity groaned, heat starting to wash over her face, as the thought of doing one of the traditional ways to relieve pain crossed her mind. The kiss on the cheek had her fuming for days, just the thought of it dusted her face with a familiar warmth.. Unable to reply to her brother’s remark, she layed back to bed and grabbed a pillow in an attempt to cover her embarrassment. Both twins chuckled.

“Well would you look at the time”, Emira said pointing at the clock, standing up and making her way to Edric. She pulled on her brother's arm and led him to get out of their sister’s room.

“We’ll wait for you downstairs Mittens”, she’ll take Amity's shuffling at the bed as a yes.

As soon as she heard the door closed, Amity got out of bed and started to do her morning routine of showering and prepping for school. She already had her breakfast from the blood apples her siblings gave her.

While brushing her hair, Amity can't help but take a glance at the corner of her dresser, she looked at the colorful birthday card Luz had given her after the surprise party, there was a small cute otter wearing a wizard hat at the side of the card - holding a sign that says "your otterly amazing”, it was dumb and sweet she couldn’t help but smile at her girlfriend’s cheezy ways of affection. She was glad that the celebration was before her actual birthday, her baby fangs fell out that day, and the adult once had started to bud out, noteworthy aches made its way to her mouth that day and she could barely think straight when she kept getting shots of pain everytime she tried to do something with her mouth.

Luckily for her, appleblood was one of the short-term numbing remedies for the pain. She made her way downstairs, Ghost following the pursuit, Amity grabbed a flask of apple blood at the kitchen, “This will come in handy” she said to herself. The twins were waiting for her in the living room, scrolling through penstangrams. “Ahm '', Amity cleared her throat, “we can go now”. With that the blight siblings left the Manor, heading towards Hexside.
