A Peach Tree

Summary:

You could only hope that he will be there before sleep takes you away.

Notes:

i blame mitski's first love/late spring for putting worms in my brain

Work Text:

Something sweet, something bitter.

You'd meet his smiles with an equally passionate frown but he smiles even brighter.

"What are you, really?" You'd ask. He doesn't seem perturbed by the question and shrugs. You've asked him the same thing many times over the years and he finds different answers every time. Today he repeated one of his previous answers.

"I'm a friend."

Yesterday you said you were my lover.

Every olive branch extended has been knocked out of his hands. But he simply takes another from the trees and tries again.

"Here." Adriah puts a tiny plate of sliced apples on your table. You didn't realize the sun had started setting already, orange light pouring into the living room and making you long for a time you never had.

He takes a seat beside you, hands clasped but his shoulders tense. He was much larger than you that even sitting a few inches next to you would cause him to bump into your shoulder.

"What's this for?"

"For eating?" His body was cold, and you wished it was summer so you would've appreciated it more.

"Why would you do this for me?"

"Because I like you."

The same answer as yesterday.

A cold bottle of water sits on your bedside table after a rough night out. The note next to it is wet, but the writing is still readable.

Don't forget to eat something before going out! I made some soup for you. It's in the fridge so you can just heat it up :) -Adriah

You scoff, but make your way to fetch the bowl of soup to heat it up and eat. It was good, but something felt missing when you listened to the sounds outside.

Why was he doing all of these things? He'd say it was because of love but it doesn't sound right. It doesn't feel right.

Every action has a consequence, you believed. There will always be a downside to anything, even with Adriah.

It was another one of those days, you're run down by the end of the day and you've been waiting to collapse on your bed and forget dinner. But there's light from the small kitchen in your apartment and even though it was most likely Adriah, you went to check it out anyway.

It was not Adriah at all, you thought as you stared at the bloody mess on your kitchen floor. The figure crouched by the fridge is large and you move closer to the door frame to hide. It seemed to be eating something and it was beyond nasty. The sound alone made your stomach lurch so you moved farther away from the kitchen.

Your eyes caught the open window that was left unlocked when you left for work. This was the worst time to have left it open.

Your foot hits the edge of the couch and you freeze in place. For a second everything stills, only the swaying of the trees outside filling the silence.

Just when you thought it was quiet enough to continue moving, the figure stands up and peeks out from the kitchen door frame, zooming in on your form just a few feet away from the door. In the few seconds you had gotten a good look of the stranger, you wished you hadn't.

Everything else was a blur right when you were knocked down on the ground. There was a great struggle, and your shock didn't help when the rogue vampire pried your arms away from your neck and pinned it to the ground.

Your chest tightened, seeing the hungry gaze being directed at you. Two large fangs protrude from the mouth, blood still staining the tip.

You choked out a cry, a sound that echoed the halls of the apartment complex. There was no strength left in you but the rogue taunts you with their bloody chin, leaning down to clean themselves off with your cheek.

This has got to be the worst day of your life.

Even when you've done everything in your power to avoid asking help from others, you're still utterly useless in saving yourself.

You feel teeth sink into your skin and your muscles slowly relax. Your breathing slows down as your eyes are glued to the ceiling of your apartment. Paint had started chipping off last week and the leaks from upstairs was getting troublesome for you to fix so you'd planned to move out soon after saving up most of your salary.

Your mind continues to swim but your body is shutting down.

Adriah had texted you beforehand that he would be gone for a bit because of a meeting with the soc, not that you cared to reply. The message was left open though, an incomplete text unsent because of how much you kept deleting and retyping them. Maybe you should've been nicer to him. Laughed at one of his jokes over the phone. Thanked him for always looking out for you… Thanked him for liking you at all.

He won't be here to revive me.

Your eyes flutter shut and the weight on your chest has lightened.

Can't feel anything anymore.

Next time, you'll be the one extending that olive branch.

If he finds me alive, that is.
