Brighter than the Stars

Summary:

Weisz is stargazing, and Shiki joins him

Work Text:

The sakura petals floated around the starry sky as Weisz sat in solitude, staring off into the abyss. The observation deck of the Edens Zero was usually the quietest place on the ship, and sometimes Weisz desperately needed the peaceful atmosphere.

Its not as if he hated being around others - it was more like he had trouble keeping up with everyone else. It was hard to return the energy that everyone else on the crew could put forth so easily. It made him tense. He sighed, and took in the scenery around him.

Just then, he heard the door click open. "Great. That didn't last long."

Peering over his shoulder, his eyes met with a pair of dark eyes, glimmering with joy. Shiki, exuberant as always, rose his hand and greeted him with a big, bright smile.

"Shiki?"

"Yo! Do you mind if I join you?"

"Sure," Weisz spoke softly, "wasn't really doing anything exciting though."

The boy made his way over to where Weisz was sitting, a skip in his step. He plopped down next to the blond.

"So are you watchin' the stars?"

Weisz nodded, "I just needed to get away somewhere quiet."

"Are you upset?" Shiki tilted his head in curiosity. He looked a little worried, which caused warmth to form in the apples of Weisz's cheeks.

"No," he reassured, "just a little tired is all."

"If you're sleepy shouldn't you go back to your cabin?"

Weisz chuckled, "Not sleepy tired. More like, mentally tired. I just need to relax."

"Ooh," Shiki sang, smiling at Weisz. He sounded like he understood, but the man was certain he didn't - at least not fully. The two of them were too different in that respect. For all the enthusiasm Weisz lacked, Shiki was a never ending source. Regardless, he appreciated Shiki's efforts. He grinned, eyes returned to the stars in front of him.

They sat together and watched the stars twinkle in the distance. Things remained calm, and Weisz was surprised at Shiki's silence - it was almost eerie. He looked over and was met with the boy staring at him, face propped up with his hand and the most tranquil look in his eyes.

"W-what are you looking at?" Weisz blurted out in embarrassment, averting eye contact.

"You, silly. What else?"

"Why though?"

Shiki closed his eyes, "You're admiring the stars to relax, I'm admiring you to relax."

"I can't imagine you'd find your inner peace staring at this grumpy mug," he laughed, scrambling to cover up the fact that Shiki had made his heart nearly leap out of his chest. "When the hell did he learn to say things like that?"

"I do," he insisted, shifting closer. He laid down and comfortably placed his head on the blond's lap, looking up at him. "When you have such a peaceful look on your face, I feel like I can see beyond the surface. As if you leave yourself a little vulnerable, somehow. It makes me feel closer to you."

Weisz's eyes widened. "That's...surprisingly profound Shiki."

The boy beamed, a smile so big that Weisz couldn't help but smile in return. He ran his fingers through Shiki's scruffy black hair, and sighed. The tension that coarsed over his body earlier had since faded without a trace. "Would you look at that? Trust Shiki to know exactly what I needed."
