Work Text:
The alarm went off just like it did every month when they got a new Greenie. He knew they had half an hour before the Box arrived so he went and got his lunch from Frypan and waited.
When Newt had finished his lunch, he saddled over to where the Box would appear and stood there with a few others.
When the clanging of the Box had ceased, he and Gally —who had arrived just five minutes ago— pulled the latches up and opened the Box.
Inside was the usual supplies, boxes, barrels, and crates. But what wasn’t usual was the Greenie.
He was huddled in a corner with his head bowed down, his hands were holding onto his shirt with a death grip, but that was the usual thing a Greenie would do.
It was when he looked up was when things became unusual. It turns out that he was actually a she, and she looked terrified.
When the girl had looked up, the boys had erupted into a loud chatter of,
“A girl?”
“I got dibs!”
“What’s she look like?”
“How old is she?”
Newt was in a sea of confusion. A girl? He didn’t know why the Creators had decided to send them a girl. Who is she? he wondered. Why—?
Nick shushed them and motioned Gally to go down the Box, which he did.
He landed with a soft thud and reached his hand out to the girl. She gave him a sceptical look before he whispered something to her. The look went from sceptical to curious and she then placed her hand in his.
While this was happening, Alby and Nick had managed to get the boys under control and had them step away from the Box so the two could get out without the Gladers crowding them.
The girl stood and limped slightly toward where Gally had jumped in and let go of his hand as she tried to climb out of the Box herself.
Gally shook his head and sighed exasperatedly before taking the girl’s feet in his hands and pushed her up. It looked like he overestimated her weight because when he pushed, he nearly sent her flying out of the Box.
Newt reacted quickly and caught her before she hit the ground. She landed on his chest with an ‘oof’ before she looked up at him.
Now that she was out of the Box, he could see what she looked like.
She had dark copper hair that fell just past her shoulders, it was slightly dishevelled and a little curly. Her eyes were turned down in the corners which gave her an almost tired look and their colour reminded him of honey as the brown was highlighted by the sun. She had a small mole in the right corner of her mouth and one on her left cheek.
She stood at what looked like one meter and sixty and was wearing dark green trousers that looked like they were practically made out of pockets. Her shirt hung loose on her, making it hard to determine her figure, but he could see that she had a fair amount of plumpness on her. Good, it meant that she was healthy.
Her lips were turned in a frown as she stepped away from him and then thudded into Gally’s chest. When the boy hand gotten out was lost to him. Her eyes widened and she stepped to the side.
The crowd of boys was silent now, all staring at the girl. She had yet to say anything, which was unusual since almost all the Greenies had at least one thing to say when they came out of the Box.
But this girl hadn’t even made a peep. She just stared right back at the boys, a look of curiosity and suspicion on her face.
He shot Nick a look and the older boy nodded. He inhaled deeply and clapped his hands three times.
