Chapter 1: Reborn in Miyagi

Chapter Text

Debate Queen

Y/N L/N sat at her desk, laptop on the table as she binged watched countless of documentaries for the hundredth time ever since she passed her grades.

No failing grade of course, not a grade under 85, in fact.

L/N had just recently moved to Miyagi Prefecture again, all the titles and accomplishments under her belt giving her a wide variety of schools to choose from.

She lived in the small town but had to relocate to the metropolitan city of Tokyo after turning 10, thanks to her mother's job in the medical field.

Y/N scrolled though her acceptance letters of scholarships on her phone, the offers ranging from 25% financial aid to a fully paid scholarship plus allowance. She was unfortunately multi-tasking, matterloading* and imagining at the same time.

Karasuno High sounded like a mediocre school, nothing too interesting about their sports team, but their Debate Team and student council rivalled the top schools-- not just in the prefecture-- in Japan.

A quick backstory on our dear protagonist(which is you, my lovely reader); Y/N L/N has been homeschooled throughout her middle school years, a conscious decision made by her family to help her focus on doing the things she loved best, debate and martial arts.

Though not often, she has also been subjected to bullying from her early years in traditional school, where she was often teased and bullied because of her weight.

Not like she minded her bullies, in fact she enjoyed the fact that those people had enough time in their lives to go out of their way and belittle other people. She would be called disgusting names, shoved, and publicly humiliated back in her old school-- because man, kids can be vicious.

Even though she had such a tough external shell, some words can truly cut deep, and some of those words indeed got to her, and at the tender age of 8, Y/N found herself in her school's bathroom, trying to overdose on pills her mom gave her.

Now, an 8 year old wouldn't exactly understand why the 10 pills of Flintstone Vitamins didn't cause her to fall to her death in a bathroom to then be found by the kind janitor who she'd often talk to, and thus, her plan of dying tragically in her school failed.

seven years ago

A girl with short black hair stepped out of the bathroom, clutching a jar of Flintstones Vitamins in her hand and wondering why she still hadn't died after taking more than two.

She scrunched up her nose and looked closely at the jar, obviously annoyed that her attempts at committing suicide did not go as she planned.

As she walked back to her classroom to prepare for dismissal, she heard a familiar shuffle of footsteps go her way, the sound of the school's issued black shoes triggering plenty of unsavory moments she had to deal with after winning the Junior Competition in Public Speaking a year ago.

L/N Y/N, an eight year old way too mature for her age, possibly even considered a genius.

The adults and teachers were so impressed by the young girl's confidence in speaking publicly, her vocabulary way more advanced as compared to her peers, her wit and intelligence making people forget that she was indeed just a child.

Mrs. L/N, Y/N's mother, valued education and knowledge, and as soon as Y/N could open her eyes, she was sent to Kumon* and made to study English and Reading.

Y/N read her first book at 3, then moved on to writing her first letters right after she could read, and a year later began reading her first chapter book. Talk about advanced.

Staying up late at night to study for a quiz, the child would often catch herself slipping out of focus only to be snapped back into reality by her mother who quit her job to focus on her daughter's welfare.

All these studying for an exam. For good grades.

Excelling in grades, Y/N had always made the Top 3 of her school, none of her grades lower than an 85, her head held up high when she received her awards.

But somehow, everyone seemed to forget that she was only a child.

And as Y/N walked on to her classroom, trying to ignore the group of kids coming her way, it started.

The name calling, teasing, and bullying.

"Hey guys! It's little Miss Piggy passing through!" one kid called out as the other children joined in.

Y/N rolled her eyes, only remembering the advice given to her by her mother.

'They're only kids, Y/N. Young and stupid.'

"What's wrong Miss Piggy? Don't you have ears?" they all trailed behind her, making snorting sounds.

"Little Miss Piggy," one kid, a boy from her class, stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "Listen to us when we're calling your name, Piggy." the boy flicked his finger on Y/N's shoulder rather roughly.

And she couldn't hold it in any longer. Last week, she had been punched by the same group of people and she had retaliated by punching them: she was almost suspended had it not been for the public speaking trophies and quiz bee medals she had won for the school.

She looked up from the floor and stared the boy right in the eye. She never bothered learning his name ever since the bullying began.

In a swift motion, Y/N kicked the boy in the stomach with her knee, leaning down to whisper a simple;

"Fuck you."

The boy groaned in pain and looked up at her, shocked that she had said the forbidden word at school, the boy trying to tattle to any adult who would listen.

All the kids backed off, finally understanding Y/N's quick reaction to her bullying, noting her anger that radiated throughout the school hallway.

Y/N walked towards her classroom and stopped when she spotted someone orange silently sniffling by the staircase.

Curious by nature, she walked to where she heard the muffled cries, slowly approaching the scene with caution.

She stood in front of the orange-haired boy that was crouched down by the stairs and raised a quizzical brow at him.

"Don't cry." she unfolded a towel from her pocket and handed it to the boy. Tangerine boy looked familiar, and Y/N remembered that they were both in the same classroom, but she never bothered to talk to her classmates right after they dumped juice on her head after she won the Public Speaking Competition.

"W-What?" tangerine boy looked up with the largest eyes in the world, as if all the light in the world was held in those eyes. Y/N felt a pang of guilt. Eyes that pretty should never cry.

"Just don't cry here," she extended her hand only for the towel to be finally accepted by the boy with shaking hands. "It's dirty and weird."

"If you wanna cry, go to the bathroom. Or better yet don't cry at all." she sat beside him slowly, going against her word of the stairs being dirty.

"Thanks." he mumbled, blowing into the towel. Tangerine boy liked the smell of the towel, it smelled like paper and baby powder, with a hint of milk.

The two children sat in silence, comforting each other in unspoken words.

"Why were you even crying in the first place?"

"Akira-san made fun of me again and he pushed me at P.E," Tangerine boy gestured to the bruise on his knee that was lazily covered with a band aid.

"Is Akira the boy with the dark hair? Does he hang out with that brown-haired girl with an annoying high voice? The one who looks constipated all the time?" Y/N asked.

"Yes, that's him," he cringed at the name. "What's constipated?"

"Nevermind the last word," she shook her head. "You need to forget that guy. He's mean and he won't be reaching anywhere for quite some time."

Tangerine boy nodded, even though he only understood half the sentence the girl had just said.

"I kicked him in the hallway earlier, so stop crying."

"You did?"

"Why? What's wrong with it?"

"Nothing! I'm just happy somebody hurt him."

"Me too."

They both sighed in relief.

The ringing of the bell cut their therapy session short, and they were both unaware of how much time had passed since then.

"Well, tangerine, i'm L/N." she stood up and helped him up.

He nodded along, "I know you. You're the smartest in class."

Y/N blushed internally at his comment, it sounded so much better when her peers thought she was smart as compared to the compliments she received from adults.

"Not really, i just started reading early. But thanks."

"I'm Hinata. Nice to meet you!"

L/N gazed in amusement at Hinata, and noted how easily his mood shifted from being gloomy to being the light of the world in such an instant. She laughed. For the longest time in school, she laughed.

This was the beginning of a life-long friendship.

After cringing at her attempts of ending her life back in traditional school, Y/N focused back on the screen, fully retaining the info from a documentary that explained the human trafficking crisis in Nepal.

That is, she remained focused until she received a text from one of her best friends, Hinata Shoyo. It was a miracle they remained in touch even after all these years. Well, thanks to technology, the two had remained very good friends throughout the years.

tangerine:

Y/N paused to think about her choices, and reminded herself that she had already chosen a school, the same school in which her best friend is also attending.

Y/N laughed to herself as she continued chatting with Hinata. Ever since the L/N arrived two months ago just before school started, Y/N and Hinata have been inseparable, with Hinata filling in Y/N on his best(and only) volleyball match, and how he excited he was to go to Karasuno.

Meanwhile, Y/N opened up more about all the things she couldn't express well enough online, such as her burnout and eating issues, the girl being very open to her Tangerine boy. In all honesty, Hinata was sometimes concerned because his best friend had such a tendency to joke about her struggles in a way that seemed very funny to her, but left her closest friends worried.

But all those aside, school season was about to start soon, and Y/N L/N couldn't wait to finally step out of her burnout phase and start giving herself wholly to debate, martial arts, and English club.

And of course, to navigate the world of highschool with her one and only Tangerine boy, Hinata Shoyo.
