Who is Agust D, mysterious artist who disappeared from the music industry ?
The year is 2016 and rapper Agust D shakes the whole rap world with his first, and highly acclaimed by critics, self-titled album. As he was getting more and more recognition, selling many copies and reaching streaming records in his genre, the young man was touring the country and attracting every day different crowds with his stage presence and talent. The writer, singer and producer of all of his songs, got himself a nice reputation in the music industry, especially when signing with Big Hit Entertainment.
Everything seemed like he would have a long and successful career. But the story took an unexpected turn when, three years ago, Agust D completely disappeared from the public eye. Concerts were cancelled, and the promising second album that was supposed to be promoted early 2017, never got to be released.
A few hours before his New Year’s Concert in Seoul, a strange post on Big Hit’s social media accounts was written.
« Tonight’s show will not take place ; Agust D is currently unavailable. In the name of the team and the artist himself, we would like to apologize for the late notice and the disappointment. We will get back to you with more information. A link for refund will be sent to everyone with a ticket by email. »
The artist never communicated nor acknowledged on the matter himself. While a number of fans were, fairly, disappointed, both by the cancellation and the lack of interest shown by the singer for his fanbase, disappointment quickly faded and left place for worry. Indeed, only three weeks went by since the strange event and the label finally shared some news. In a long and upsetting statement, the termination of the contract between Agust D and the company was announced. The reasons are today still unknown, and Big Hit themselves stated how surprised they were by the young man’s decision. They admitted that they received the news by email, only twenty-four hours before the cancelled New Year’s show. The company also shared some deeply concerning revelations.
« We tried to get in touch with Agust D for weeks to discuss this sudden choice, but our calls were never answered. [...] None of our attempts reached him, unfortunately. While we still don’t understand what happened, we hope Agust D is doing fine. He knows how welcomed he will always be in our company and our studios. »
What happens in 2020 ? Well, not much. On the artist's side at least, nothing. We heard about this strange story only recently, and our curiosity pushed us to make some research. We never found anything more than what was discovered by fans in the last few years : no police investigation on the matter, no disappearance matching.
The only conclusion we could think of was that Agust D voluntarily disappeared from the music industry. Some would argue that the reasons are purely commercial, but this scenario seems, to us, unlikely. It’s well-known how costly it is to end an artist contract with a label before the planned date. Add to that a cancelled tour that was supposed to take place in 2017 and an aborted second album and you get a cost definitely not worth any publicity stunt. And if it was the case, why wait so long to come back ?
