Think Again (Adrienette AU)

Summary:

"The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry."

Adrien Agreste does not believe in such a saying. After receiving a 'yes' to his marriage proposal from his girlfriend of a year, Kagami Tsurugi, he deems himself one of the luckiest men in the world.

...That is until he finds out that he's been married to someone else this whole time.

To a clumsy and wildly chimerical girl, the breadwinner of her family, Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

And divorce is something that she completely disapproves of under one simple yet fatal condition.

Chapter Text

I'm What?!

“This is it. The beginning of our future together,” Adrien whispers, his voice full of fruitful anticipation and excitement as he is being driven with his fiancée of five days to one of the government offices to prepare some of the documents needed for their wedding which will be held in seven months. The limousine is wide enough for the young couple to enjoy some quiet time to themselves.

He proposed to his girlfriend of a year, Kagami Tsurugi, and after she said yes, they both could not wait with the preparations for the wedding.

Being a model under his own father’s design label and for other high-class and worldwide designers, Adrien knew that he had to bring out the best in him. He also had to make sure that he was around the best kind of people. Kagami was the right fit in his world. He loves how sophisticated and elegant she is with her ways and words. The manner in which she holds herself demands nothing but attention and respect from the people around her. He knew they were the perfect match. He knew that their lives were completely intertwined.

He presses a kiss on the back of her hand as their fingers stay interlaced. Kagami flashes him a small smile and asks him in a whisper, “Are you excited?”

“Of course, I am,” he answers. “The moment you told me that you wanted to visit the office to gather our documents for the marriage certificate, I turned down all my bookings and made time for you.”

Kagami titters at that, happy to know of her fiancé’s willingness to even move mountains for her. “You know how much I love it when things are organized and fixed exactly according to plan.”

Adrien nods, pressing another gentle kiss on the back of her hand. She continues, “I also love it when things are done early. My mother would not stop nagging if ever I were to slack off. Though, your bookings were not entirely affected, right? I don’t want to be the cause of sudden mishaps-”

“No, no, of course not,” He reassures her, “They completely understood when I told them. The staff even wishes us all kinds of congratulations after hearing the news.”

His fiancée breaks off into another smile. “I guess that we’ll be expecting more gifts and bouquets from them.” She squeezes his hand in her hold before letting out a sigh purely out of content. “How exciting. We’re not even married yet and we’re now receiving tons of gifts along with well-wishes.”

“That is how much they love you.”

She pouts her lips, hoping to look cute as she does so. “But you love me more, right?” She playfully bats her eyelashes at him, something she has only ever done in front of her fiancé and to no one else.

Adrien grins at her and cranes his neck to capture her lips with his. His free hand immediately moves to take a hold of the nape of her neck to deepen their kiss. Even the way they kiss could be considered elegant. There is nothing torrid or desperate about it, but it still does say a lot about their feelings for each other.

He pulls away and just as his eyes fluttered open, he meets the loving gaze of his fiancée. Fiancée, just even thinking of it feels so foreign, yet it gives a certain shudder down the spine. He certainly loves it so much. “Does that answer your question?” he mutters breathlessly, earning a wide grin from Kagami.

------------

“I am surprised with how early a couple comes here to have their wedding documents prepared,” the government worker, in charge of citizen records and social security numbers, comments, clearly showing how impressed she is with the young couple who are seated together in front of her desk.

“Well, we just want everything ready ahead of time, ma’am,” Kagami replies cheerfully, keeping her arm looped around Adrien’s. “I just love it when things are organized and well-planned.”

“I can see that,” the worker mutters under her breath. Thankfully, the couple did not hear her sarcastic remark. They are too busy being engrossed in each other’s presence. She clicks through the folders in the database displayed on the computer screen, going through records to check the couple’s current individual records to see if there are any anomalies or things of that nature. “Aside from knowing the details you would need when filling up your marriage certificate,” she utters, this time in a louder voice as it is meant for the couple to hear, “There are also other things, mostly in terms of shared property. Also,” the worker pauses from looking at the computer screen to avert her gaze to Kagami, “Miss Tsurugi, do you plan on changing your surname?”

“Oh!” Kagami exclaims. “I’m actually planning to hyphenate my last name. I wish to keep the honor brought by my family name.”

The worker nods in assent. “I understand. There are still some papers that you might have to fill out for that to be fixed-”

“Oh, I know about that already,” Kagami interrupts her, “You don’t have to tell me twice.”

The worker forces out a smile, something that she is accustomed to doing when people treat her work as menial. “Well, isn’t that convenient?”

“Isn’t my fiancée the best?” Adrien utters in pure excitement to the worker before leaving a kiss on Kagami’s cheek.

Sir, this is a government office. Keep those feelings to yourself. “I guess she really is,” the worker forces out, still keeping that sarcastic smile of hers. Then she clears her throat, wanting to change the subject and the horrid view in front of her as she turns her attention back to the computer. “I am now going to go through your personal information again,” she informs them, scrolling through the different forms and licenses on the screen with the help of the mouse. “And for entertainment purposes, I might as well check your civil statuses to ensure that none of you are married.”

Adrien laughs, finding it hilarious that the worker would even have to go through that. “You won’t find anything there. Trust me, none of us are even married-”

“Oh, my,” the worker suddenly gasps in an absolute state of shock. What she discovered is something that will truly be considered the highlight of her boring job. She instantly looks at Adrien, her mouth agape.

This causes the man to throw the woman a skeptical look. “Is something wrong?” he warily asks. Even Kagami is beginning to worry now.

“Mister Agreste,” the woman starts slowly, “are you sure you’re not married?”

Adrien scoffs, finding the question absolutely ridiculous, “Of course, I’m sure that I’m not married!”

The woman then turns the computer around for her to show the screen to the couple. “It does not say so here in the database.”

With furrowed brows, Adrien leans forward and peers into the screen. There, on display, is a scanned copy of a certificate of marriage, and his heart drops to his stomach just as bile rises when he reads his full name typed on the certificate. His eyes widened in bewilderment and kept on re-reading what was written on the certificate to make sure that his eyes were not playing tricks on him.

Kagami gasps from beside him, a hand flying to her mouth. “A-Adrien?” She asks in utter confusion, throwing him a look mixed with worry and something akin to betrayal.

“K-Kagami,” he coughs out and vehemently shakes his head, gesticulating profusely as he tries to explain himself, “I swear, I did not know. I must have been tricked, I must have been-” He stops himself from rambling on any further and looks back at the certificate of marriage still currently displayed on the screen. It can’t be. I'm not married! How in the world could I be married?!

The date of marriage typed in bold on the form shows that it happened around six months ago. He squeezes his eyes shut, racking through his memories to go back to that certain date.

“Adrien?” He hears Kagami call out his name again, her voice clearly on the verge of tears.

“I-I swear,” he mutters, still with his eyes shut, “I don’t-”

“Dude, forget about her! Forget about everything! Have some fun!”

Flashing neon lights. Loud music reverberating off the walls of the club.

“You look cute!” “Thanks, I know!”

Endless rows of flaming shots and a blurry figure taking down seven of them without a break.

“I like you! Let’s get married!” “Heck, yeah!”

Loud cheers as another bottle of champagne popped open.

The loud buzzing sound of a tattoo machine followed by a searing pain located on the backside, and the tight hold of someone’s soft hand around his.

“This is so cool! I’m never going to forget this night!”

His eyes fly wide open as he lets out another gasp, this one in realization. It all makes sense now. That clueless night from six months ago. That night-out with his close friends...ended up with a wedding to an utter stranger?

Adrien peers close to the screen again, reading through the name of the woman he is married to in a state of panic.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

And now he knows the answer to the initials MDC

...tattooed using black ink engraved on his upper-right butt cheek.
