Work Text:
In the quiet of the room, Baekhyun types quickly, once in a while checking the ultrasound scans laid on the table next to the mouse. It’s already close to evening, he guesses, judging by the waiting area outside his room isn’t full of chatter, but he doesn’t even mind as he focuses on the task at hand, typing his last patient report for the day.
Summary of ultrasound findings: normal intrauterine pregnancy.
DIAGNOSIS: Pregnancy with acute appendicitis.
There are limitations to ultrasound screening; the type of fetal anomaly, amount of amniotic fluid, body mass index, and the position of the unborn baby at the time of the scan can affect the detection rates.
Byun Baekhyun, MD
Sonologist
Baekhyun sighs, pulling away from his desk in his swivel chair and stretches his arms up in the air. He doesn’t even realize his muscles have tensed and how tired his body has been. It’s been a long day; 5 pregnancies and 4 various abdominal scans he can’t even recall anymore in his brain. He checks the clock, contemplating going straight out to sleep when he’s back home or playing more with his video game, only to throw all those plans out the window when he notices the time.
“8.30 PM?” Baekhyun voices out, bewildered. He’s pretty sure the last time he checked the time, it was around 4 PM, and he hasn’t even eaten yet since morning. Other than the one sandwich he had before his shift, his poor tummy hasn’t got their food.
As if on cue, his stomach grumbles, loud enough to make the assigned nurse—Taeyeon—chuckles at the sound as she enters the room. “Sorry about that,” Baekhyun laughs, slightly embarrassed. He quickly gestures to the printer, pointing to the printed report. “I’ve done my last report, by the way. You can compile them and send them to the referring doctor.”
“All right,” Taeyeon nods, taking the report from the printer and compiling it with the other medical reports in the green map she holds. Baekhyun gets up to his feet, cleaning up his belongings and prepares to finally get out of the room for the day.
“Oh, dr. Byun, before I forget, your meal has been delivered to the doctors’ mess. I asked the kitchen staff to bring them there as this room will be used again after this,” Taeyeon informs as she puts the DVD of the ultrasound scans in the green map and checks the name of the patient on the map’s information.
“Oh?” Baekhyun says, slinging his small sling bag over his shoulder as he turns towards her. “It’ll be used again after this? That’s rare.”
“Yeah,” she nods. “Dr. Do will use the room later; one of his patients can only set an appointment for today.” And then, she frowns a bit. “It’s pretty inconvenient, though, especially with how dr. Do has to quickly get here from another hospital.”
“Oh,” Baekhyun nods, not saying anything else. He already had a feeling it must be dr. Do. Because, who else is the sonology physician at this hospital besides the two of them anyway?
Baekhyun’s heard of him, though. Dr. Do is the new sonologist at this hospital who fills the shift days when Baekhyun is at another hospital. While Baekhyun works there from Monday to Wednesday, dr. Do takes the shifts on Thursday until Saturday. That’s why, Baekhyun never gets the chance to meet this supposedly new colleague of his, despite how often he hears the other’s name being mentioned frequently. Apparently, dr. Do turns out to be quite popular, and he’s known from Jongdae enough to know it’s because of his attractive features.
kjdae: hey, are you still at the hospital?
Baekhyun checks the notification of his phone, typing a quick yes before walking to the door. “I’m gonna go first, thank you for today,” Baekhyun waves at Taeyeon who’s turning off the ultrasound machine, before strolling out into the hall. He stops at the end of the hallway, waiting for the elevator while checking back his message.
kjdae: wow, a lot of patients for today, huh?
kjdae: i wanna ask if you’re up to another patient after this, i referred one of my patients to you and she’s still here
bbaekhyun: u wanna prolong my working hours that bad??
bbaekhyun: but just assign her for tomorrow i think, the room will be used by dr. Do after this
kjdae: oh??
kjdae: dr. Do??? 👀👀
kjdae: how do you know he’ll come here tonight
bbaekhyun: of course from my assigned nurse, dumbass. she informed me
kjdae: oh, right. no fun :(((
kjdae: but have you met him though? 👀
bbaekhyun: what’s with the eye emoji
bbaekhyun: nah i haven’t
kjdae: you should meet him, you know. he’s fucking handsome
bbaekhyun: yeah, for you
bbaekhyun: and you’re usually exaggerating
kjdae: WHAT
kjdae: I’M NOT
Baekhyun turns off his phone, chuckling at how Jongdae continues his series of protests. He steps aside for a patient in a wheelchair who comes out from the elevator, sending the family a smile and walks in when it’s finally empty. He presses the 9th-floor button, waiting as the elevator slowly moves upwards.
Now that he isn’t working, his stomach feels hungrier than before. He purses his lips as he thinks about which staff meal he’ll get tonight, praying it’ll be something other than kimchi and scrambled eggs. He can request for a special, actually, since he’s not a hospital office staff and the kitchen’s staff is kind enough to make something for him if the ingredients are available, but Baekhyun thinks it’ll be a hassle for the chefs and simply settle for the same meal as the staff.
When he arrives on the 9th floor, Baekhyun walks through the slightly dim hallway, waving at the few physicians and nurses he passes by. He finally stops in front of the door labeled ON-CALL ROOM, turning the doorknob slightly before getting in. Even though he’s technically not an on-call doctor, it’s not uncommon for various physicians to rest and chat in the doctors’ mess.
It’s unsurprisingly deserted in the room, the only sound filling the silence comes from the air conditioner. Baekhyun walks in, eyes immediately land on the food tray at the table and feels his stomach growl even more at the sight. At least it’s something different this time—a bowl of fried rice with a sunny side up on the top—and Baekhyun excitedly takes off his white coat and tosses it onto the nearest bunk bed without looking as he walks over to the table.
There’s another food tray next to his, he notices, and he barely peeks to see the label on the top of the plastic wrap before suddenly, he hears a soft groan coming from somewhere behind him.
Baekhyun jumps, a hand immediately goes up to his chest as he turns around in shock to look at the bunk bed. He almost curses because he swears he didn’t see anyone in the room when he came in and what the actual fuck because—
Oh.
Oh wait.
Baekhyun stops in his tracks, mind completely blank for a second at the sight of the man sleeping soundly in the lower bunk bed across him. He must’ve looked creepy like this, staring at a literal stranger openly, but he can’t really help it, not when the most good-looking person on earth sleeps that attractively in front of him, looking so peaceful and so, so adorable to his eyes. Subconsciously, Baekhyun trails his gaze to the name tag on the left chest of the person’s white coat, slightly tilted and almost pressed to the sheets.
Do Kyungsoo, MD
So Jongdae isn’t exaggerating, after all.
Baekhyun looks up again, letting his eyes appreciate the features of the sleeping man on the bunk bed. Dr. Do has thick eyebrows, very attractive eyebrows, and plump lips to top it all as he breathes softly in his sleep. Even at this distance, his cheeks look smooth, propped by fine cheekbones and a sharp jawline but still filled healthily and pressed gently against the pillow. Maybe, Baekhyun’s a bit starstruck right now, but who wouldn’t anyway when this man is very hot but also very, very adorable? Does that even make sense?
Before Baekhyun can really figure it out in his head, though, his stomach rumbles and he jumps again, turning around and slaps his hand to his cheeks.
“Don’t be a creep, Baekhyun,” he shakes his head as if to clear his mind, shakes his head again for a good measure before walking back to his precious fried rice and opens the plastic wrap.
When he starts to eat, he immediately forgets all his embarrassments and everything, actually, because he’s that hungry and food is the way to happiness. He munches loudly, taking the fried rice into his mouth as he plans to play video games a little when he’s back home before snuggling happily with his blankets. Maybe he can play a round or two.
“Dr. Byun?”
Baekhyun jumps (again) in his seat, miserably choking on his food before reaching for his orange juice. He coughs a few more times, hitting his chest before feeling a warm hand soothe the back of his shirt.
“Are you okay? Sorry, I didn’t mean to surprise you,” says a deep, soothing voice.
Baekhyun freezes, of course, his brain stops working for a second. Unfortunately, this is easily noticed by the person, who quickly withdraws their hand. Baekhyun stiffly turns his head to the side, looking up to meet eyes with the very person he’s staring at just a few minutes ago.
Oh, oh he’s doomed.
“No, no. It’s fine. I was just lost in my thoughts,” Baekhyun waves nonchalantly, chuckling nervously as his eyes try to look anywhere but the good-looking physician in front of him.
Kyungsoo hums, nodding a few times before looking at him once again, making sure he’s really okay. “Good, then. I was just going to ask something, actually.”
“Oh?” Baekhyun looks up at him again, slightly surprised. “What is it?”
“Well,” Kyungsoo shifts his weight to the side, uncertainly holding up a white coat in his hand. “Is this yours?”
Baekhyun turns his eyes to the said coat, pausing for a moment to process it in his brain, before finally remembers to breathe out again. “Oh my God.”
Baekhyun thinks he’s panicking internally, because he literally threw his white coat at Kyungsoo while stepping in and because of his stupid starstruck moment, he forgot to take it back. But he’s also panicking externally, because he immediately stands up to look at Kyungsoo with his best puppy eyes at the moment and claps his hand in front of his chest in apology. “I’m sorry,” he says, panicking even more if it’s even possible. “I was just— I thought no one’s in the room when I came in, and I immediately went to eat after that.” That’s not exactly the truth, but Kyungsoo doesn’t need to know that.
Kyungsoo only looks back at him, lips twisted in amusement, before suddenly breaking into a laugh. His shoulders shake in his mirth, eyes curving up cutely as they form two crescent moons. And most importantly, his lips form a heart Baekhyun can only stare at dumbfoundedly again.
“Okay, okay, I get it,” Kyungsoo says in between his laugh, shaking his head. “You better not throw your coat anywhere, though, dr. Byun.”
“Yeah, yeah, really sorry for that,” Baekhyun says again, now laughing sheepishly with him. It feels like Kyungsoo’s laugh is contagious. “Won’t do it again.”
“Good,” Kyungsoo grins as his laugh has died down, practically shoving the white coat against his face. “Here, take it back. I should go quickly to our room; my patient has arrived.”
“Oh,” Baekhyun says, nodding as he takes the white coat from Kyungsoo’s hand and their fingers brush slightly in the process. He grins. “Go then, save the world.”
Kyungsoo rolls his eyes, but his smile is wide on his lips. He pats Baekhyun on the back, walking swiftly to the door to save the world, but before he opens the door, he turns around once more, looking at Baekhyun with eyes shining with intrigue and amusement.
“Oh and, nice to finally meet you, dr. Byun.”
Baekhyun looks back at him, brows arched in question, before laughing and nodding back at him.
“Nice to meet you too, dr. Do.”
And really, that’s how they meet.
