The Ones We Forget

Summary:

The History of Hyrule is long and varying. Wars are fought and won. People live. People die. Battles and events unrelated to great evils are glossed over, and those lost are forgotten by time. This is a group of short oneshots about those we forget.

Link carried Impa into the cave, the screams of terror as the abnormally strong monsters tore through his comrades echoing off the walls. He set Impa down on the rocky floor and was finally able to assess their injuries. He had a cut over his shin and one in his right shoulder, both of which he had quickly wrapped in cloth. Impa was much worse off. She had lost a lot of blood, enough that she was unable to even see anymore. He pulled out a half-empty vial of elixir into her mouth, but both of them knew it wouldn’t be enough. After drinking what remained, she pushed it away weakly. There was a slowly growing bloody spot where she had been hit in the stomach.

“Impa, just hold on, okay?” He said, panicked. “If we can wait, the Royal Army will be here to take out these bastards.”

Impa coughed. “We both know I can’t last that long. It’s no use worrying about that now. How’s your sister?” She said, trying to distract him.

“Impa! I- but-” Link sighed, nervously brushing a hand through his sticky hair. “S-she’s fine. You know her birthday is next week. We were hoping to have her home that day, but she’s stuck in the castle for now. There’s too many injured to take care of.” he sniffled. “S-so, how’s your’s?”

“O-oh Purah?” She stammered. “She’s eccentric as always. You know, she tried to get me to ride inside one of those Guardians? There was no way I was going in one of those death traps!” She laughed, but bloody tears began to run down her face. “I- I made some dumb excuse and ran off b-before she could respond!” Her nervous laughter shifted into pained sobbing. “Link, I don’t want to die.” She cried. Link could do nothing to help her, and she knew it. She grasped for him, eventually getting her arms around his torso in a weak hug. “I don’t want to die, don’t go, don’t leave me alone.

“I won’t.” He said, trying and failing to keep the emotion out of his voice. “It’s okay, I’ll be right here.” Tears streamed down his face as he returned the limp hug.

After a couple of minutes, he felt Impa’s hand slide down his back and onto the ground. Over the screams of battle, he finally allowed himself to cry.

Almost none of the Southeastern Hyrule Regiment survived the attack. Kakariko and neighboring towns were ravaged by the monster army until the Royal Army arrived and cleared the remainder of the monsters from their ruins.
