The first time I saw him, he was digging ketchup out of a bottle with a knife. The only person in the place was the owner of the dinner. I had heard rumors of this man; he was apparently the resistance leader. Seeing him jabbing a knife in and out of the bottle I can see why. His white fur with red pattering gave him the appearance of a bloody lunatic but his purple eyes seemed to scream trustworthy.
“One moonberry milkshake please,” I asked the water sitting down next to him.
“You heard about me haven’t you,” said the man with a mischievous smile “I go by the name Moontears.”
“A-6214 is my name,” I said nervously.
“Named by the government like almost everyone else right. Don’t worry this is one of the few places in the empire that don’t have any surveillance. It’s run by my old friend who is a counselor and is part of the resistance,” Moontears said calmly.
“Okay, I think I can be of use to the resistance,” I said, still nervous.
“For starters if you're going to join the resistance you need to go by an actual name not just a set of numbers. That way it will be harder for them to catch you. I suggest something fire related that ability of yours seems quite amazing,” Moontears said as calmly as ever.
“How did you know that I was a Fliter,” I asked surprised.
“I’m one too though unlike you I was never registered. My power is not that easily noticed. I can read minds and the fact that you're a Fliter has been one the main things you have been thinking about since you got in here. I guessed it was fire related based on the flame colored patterns that show up so noticeably on your black fur,” Moontears said a smile plastered on his face.
“I want to join because I just got a letter saying I am being assigned to the army invading the planet Yutts. I never have been much of a fighter though that was why when I got out of academy I signed up to work at an orphanage. The kids at the Mangrove orphanage love me and I don’t want to abandon them but it seems I don’t have much of a choice. But if I have to leave I want to at least work towards giving them a better life. Oh also, the name I want to go by is Campfire so I will be known as something that brings joy and comfort,” I said with pride welling up in my chest.
“You are a great man. Welcome to the resistance. I think the children will be quite pleased with what you will do. I have visited the orphanage many times. It’s a shame what the empire’s hunger for power does to kids. All kids deserve a family,” Moontears said, staring out the window.
“Yes, thank you sir. I will not let you down,” I said, shaking his hand.
“Go to the candy store on Factory Avenue. Darkheart will be waiting for you. He is a black and white cat with a heart pattern on his chest with a red outline. You can’t miss him,” Moontears said as I left the dinner.
