Deck the Halls (of the hideout)

Summary:

Yelena and Natasha have truly never experienced a real Christmas. So, they decide to take matters into their own hands.

Chapter Text

It had been snowing outside for the past two hours and Yelena hadn't removed her gaze from the window. It was the first time she’d seen it since she was a small girl living in Ohio. The apartment, also their hideout currently, was chilly. Matching the temperature outside. It didn’t seem to matter in the slightest to Yelena, though. Natasha, on the other hand, was curled up under two dingy quilts and still shivering slightly. She had to fight the urge in the back of her mind to ask Yelena to come over and share her body heat. It wouldn't have been very wise considering the growing feelings Natasha had caught for the younger spy.

“Tasha,” Yelena spoke softly, her eyes still focused on the falling flurries. “When was the last time you celebrated Christmas?” There was a moment of silence as Natasha thought back to a few Christmases she’d spent in the Avenger’s tower. The others were mostly around, but it still didn’t feel like a genuine holiday. Even the fake photoshoot holidays of her childhood weren’t real to her. There truly weren’t any good memories associated with Christmas.

Natasha shrugged in response before realizing Yelena couldn’t see her. “I haven’t really celebrated ever. If you hadn’t said anything I wouldn’t have even realized Christmas Eve was tomorrow.” It was the truth, even if it made Natasha’s chest ache a bit.

“We should celebrate,” Yelena answered, finally turning back to look at Natasha. “You know, like making cookies and decorating a tree. All that stuff.” It was said with such hesitance that Natasha couldn’t help the soft smile that overtook her face.

“Of course, Lena. We’re gonna be in this apartment for awhile anyway. Mine as well follow tradition.” The giant grin that Yelena gave her in response was enough to make her heart skip a beat. She was truly a goner for this other woman. It was only a matter of time before she slipped up and said or did something stupid. She had to get her feelings under control and fast.

“We are so getting a giant tree from the forest tomorrow,” Yelena exclaimed and turned her attention back towards the outside world.

It was then that Natasha realized what she’d just gotten herself into. The only response she gave was a fond eye roll, which went completely unnoticed by Yelena.
