After the drama of the night, Tokageroh seemed to slip into the night, presumably at peace and on his way to nirvana, leaving behind an air of calm.
The brunette shaman who had appeased the low life bandit sat on the porch with his best friend, Manta, catching their breath after the perils they both faced merely minutes ago. The stillness of the night was, however, ruined by Ryu’s delinquent friends fretting over their fallen leader. Their constant worrying was getting to the blonde itako who stood by, her arms folded against her chest, brows furrowed.
“You boys! Take that weird guy upstairs to the spare room!” She demanded, she had had enough. She turned to look at the small boy sitting by her fiancé “And you!” pointing at the boy who had just jolted up at the sound of her voice “You can stay the night too, it’s pretty late.”
Manta needn't dare go against the wishes of Anna so he quickly followed Ryu’s gang as they all shuffled inside.
After she finished directing Ryu’s gang upstairs she quickly turned to glare at the brunette who sat sheepishly on the porch. He, in return, nervously peered up at her face.
Tear tracks, highlighted by the moonlight, stained her usually stoic face. He felt terrible. He never thought once about how his actions could hurt her. He was merely thinking about how to save the aggressive bandit's life. He now suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
“I’m sorry Anna..” He started before his ear was roughly pinched.
“Sorry?!” She snapped at him “You never learn do you?!”
Her grip on his ear vanished. Yoh braced himself for the slap of his life but it never came.
“Go sit in the kitchen. I’ll bring the first aid kit” Her voice was soft. The adrenaline of the night had made him completely forget about the slash along his chest. The cut appeared a lot worse than it was. He was lucky that he had dodged it in time, it wouldn’t leave a scar.
…
Anna was gentle as she applied antiseptic on the wound, a touch somewhat foreign to Yoh. His fiancée had always been bold and rough with him. Tonight her touch felt tentative, scared even.
“Anna, I’m sorry” His hands came up to steady her shaking hands.
“I nearly lost you” Her voice was quiet, the tone strange to him.
“I’m still here. Everything always works out in the end” He reassured her. His usual motto vexed her tonight. He had been so close to death. If his innocent trust in the no-good spirit hadn’t worked out she would have lost him. She couldn’t bear the thought.
“It nearly didn’t though, Yoh. What happens when it doesn’t?” She glared at him before returning to her duty of dressing his wound. “I’ll be left here without you” she added in a whisper almost too quiet to hear.
He stayed quiet unsure of how to act while she was being so candid. He hadn't thought about how it would affect her. She was so strong all the time, it was easy to forget she could hurt.
“You need to stop trying to save every lost soul you see!” She chided him, her usual sharp tone back.
“But Anna!” he whined as his fiancée placed the antiseptic gel back into the first aid box.
“No buts! What if a villain makes up a sob story for you to fall victim to?! What then?” she rebuked.
“Anna, you worry too much”
“I nearly lost the man I love to a ghost who calls himself ‘Lizard’, of course I'm worried!!” She rebuked before resting her head in his chest, exhausted. This tumble with near death had reminded her that the shaman fight was perilous, she could loose him at any moment. And if he kept his earnest belief that there was good in everyone there was a high chance he wouldn’t last long.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a hearty chuckle from her fiancé, obviously finding humour in Tokageroh’s name.
“I’m sorry, it’s not funny” He managed between laughs before sighing “Look Anna, I’m going to be ok” He gave her a warm smile of reassurance.
She was ready to scold him some more until her eyes noticed the scars along his flanks from when he had saved her from the dark depths of her own powers. If he hadn’t been there for her, her life would have been entirely different. She shuddered to think what would have happened to her if she was left in that darkness. Would her darkness have corrupted her very soul? Would she even still be alive ?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a calloused hand gently intertwining itself with her own soft hand. It was as if the brunette had read her mind and was reassuring her that it was ok. She looked up at warm brown eyes, kind and gentle.
“I just can't lose you” She managed, a glaze of tears clouding her eyes.
“You won't. I've got a promise to keep” He kissed her forehead softly and with that simple act of endearment it felt like all her worries had blown away. His warm smile seemed to melt away her fears, her hand in his, safe and secure. She had to have complete faith in him. He was here, and at this very moment, that was all that mattered to Anna.
