Chapter Text
Denki was having a shit day.
As dramatic or blunt as that may seem, it is simply the truth. It had really and truly been a shitty awful day. The type of day where you wake up sore and nauseous, find out you failed a test that almost everyone else passed, and overuse your quirk in training just to be laughed at.
So yes Denki has had a shit day and therefore was in a bad mood.
Just act normal. There's only one more hour until school is over then you can go back to your dorm.
He was currently sitting on the bench by the practice fields because not even 20 minutes into class he had accidentally shorted out and had to take a break. It was incredibly embarrassing because everyone always laughed. He had only seen what it looked like on videos because he wasn't very self-aware while in that state. He could see and hear but everything was fuzzy and he couldn't understand what people said. So when he went into that state he was pretty useless.
To be honest it scared him.
He was constantly worrying about what would happen if he did that during a fight. It would just make him dead weight for the other heroes.
He didn't tell people about this particular fear because he assumed they would laugh at him and call him dramatic. Or they would agree with him and realize he was useless.
“Hey Denks, you feel up for another round?”
He’s startled out of his thoughts by Sero.
He quickly plasters on a grin saying, “You know I can't let you win that easily.”
And that is how he ends up short circuiting for the second time that day.
---
Denki is walked back to the dorms only half-aware of his surroundings. He starts to see more clearly and finally comes out of the fogginess to a room full of his chattering classmates with him on the couch.
As soon as he is mostly back to normal the noise and stomach pain hits him like a truck.
He gets up, almost falling over as spots dance in his eyes.
“Hey dude you ok? You don't look so good.” someone says from the opposite couch.
“Heh yeah i'm alright, i think im just gonna.. go lie down.” he replies
Without waiting for an answer he grips the couch and stumbles toward the elevator.
He manages to not pass out and get to his door. Struggling with it for a minute before throwing it open and stumbling to the bathroom. He barely made it to the toilet before vomiting up the little lunch he got down.
And… shit that's blood. dammit not again.
He flushes the toilet before lays down with his back on the cold tile floor. Looking up at the bright bathroom light hurt his head so he closed his eyes.
Just gonna… rest my eyes for a bit… yea..
---
When he woke up the sun had set which only added to the disorienting feeling of waking up on the floor with a headache and the taste of copper in the back of your mouth.
He sat up trying to get re-oriented. He realized his headache had gone down quite a bit since his nap. Getting up to check the time he saw it was about 7 and he had a text from the group chat:
😘😫😉😍✨Bakusquad✨😍😉😫😘
Today 6:22pm
Alien Queen👽👑💅🏽💗: Hey Denki me and the others wanted to have a movie night if you're up for it! We’ll probably start right after dinner if you wanna come! ;)
Kiri👀😛😫: Yeah man we havent done one in awhile hope you can come!
He was really tired and would honestly rather sleep but the squad haven't had a movie night in forever so he didn't want to disappoint them by bailing.
⚡️Walmart Pikachu⚡️: Sorry lol i was a sleep. Yeah that sounds fun! I have some hw to do first but i'll go quick :)
While this may surprise some, Denki actually does try in school. He just… forgets stuff sometimes.
He sets multiple reminders daily to do his homework but eventually he stops being able to acknowledge the reminders and forgets. So he writes himself notes and puts them all over his room along with the reminders, and it works for a little while. But then they blend into the background too and he forgets. It happens a lot but he isn't sure why, he figures everyone else must just know a better way to deal with it.
His parents never understood when he tried to explain that he was actually trying and not just slacking off. It was just so hard to pay attention sometimes. He would be spaced out in class during a lecture and a teacher would call on him, resulting in an “uhhh” and a classroom full of giggles.
It was easier when he was younger but as he got older the material became more confusing and he just never could figure it out. His quirk definitely didn’t help either. It’s drawbacks made him to be even more spaced out than normal and he started to develop tics at the end of middle school. He was mostly able to pass off as fidgeting and difficulty staying still (which had also been a problem before). A few times he had accidentally ticked more noticeably and Bakugou had definitely noticed but didn’t say anything.
He finished his math pages (not correctly but he technically did it) and layed back on his bed, realizing once again just how miserable he felt.
Now as he sat in his room alone he started to space out again and honestly he didn't have the energy to stop it.
His mind wandered back to his parents which often happened after days like this.
“You can't be a hero if you can't even get decent grades.”
“You’ll just make it harder for the other heroes when you short circuit and get yourself killed.”
He tries so hard to prove himself to them and everyone else but sometimes it's just so hard. How can he get better when he passes out and vomits up blood every time he has a bad day.
Stop being dramatic god this is pathetic
I'm just sitting here, im allowed to have feelings
You're just being dramatic and doing this for attention
There's literally no one here, i haven't even told anyone
Stop thinking you're special because your ego got hurt, a lot of people have it worse than you so stop whining
“God could you shut up,” he sighed, rolling over into his pillow.
His brain would sometimes have these fights with itself and the points it made usually didn't make much sense, but it still always made him feel worse.
Suddenly there's a soft knock at the door and he forces himself to sit up and open it.
“Hey Kaminari, I just thought I would let you know there's dinner downstairs if you want any.” Uraraka said, smiling at him.
“Yeah sure I'll be down in a minute,” he said, smiling back.
After taking some painkillers he headed downstairs into the chaos.
