“How long have you been awake?” Michael asked as he rolled over, body warm and cuddly in their shared sheets.
Alex briefly considered feigning sleep, but his phone was on and Michael was already pillowing his scruffy cheek on Alex’s bare shoulder. So Alex just sighed and pressed a kiss to Michael's curls.
“Just a bit –- the new meds, they give me these –-” and Alex tapped his palm on his sternum to the irrational speeding beat of his heart.
Michael nodded; Alex had been sharing a little more every month about where his body was at, what the meds were doing to it: good, bad, and indifferent. It was a kind of intimacy he never would have imagined possible, and one he treasured nearly as much as waking up with the other man still in his bed.
“How can I help?” Michael asked, just like he always did.
And just like he always did, Alex pressed another kiss to his warm hair, snuggled himself down into their blankets and murmured: “Just you being here helps.”
Michael nodded sleepily, and turned over, giving Alex his back and his slow, even breaths to match to as they both eased back down to a gentle sleep.
