Hitoshi was almost home when the smell hit his nostrils like a train and caused his fur to bristle. Hissing in anger and panic, he started running, not caring if he bumped into anyone on the way. There was blood. Blood that belonged to his mate! Who dared to hurt Izuku?
When he reached their building, the cat shifter almost kicked in the door to their shared apartment, his body already half shifted with extended claws and fangs, ready to attack whoever had invaded their den and hurt Izuku. Looking around frantically, Hitoshi tried to locate the danger and the source of Izuku’s blood. His panic only grew when he didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. No signs of burglary, no signs of a fight, nothing. Even their shoes stood neatly in the entrance area. Hitoshi was about to run back down onto the street, thinking that he had misread the trace and that the scent was coming from somewhere else, when a soft, confused voice made him stop in his tracks.
“Toshi?”
Turning back around, Hitoshi saw his mate peek around the corner to the bathroom, looking at him with wide green eyes, his floppy bunny ears twitching.
“What’s wrong?”
The sight of Izuku made some of the tension leave Hitoshi, but the smell of blood, even though it had been faint right from the start and had almost disappeared by now, still made him anxious.
“I… you… your blood,” Hitoshi tried to explain, slowly starting to feel embarrassed. What was going on? Izuku was obviously fine. But…
Green eyes grew even wider. “You were able to smell that? But it was nothing? I just nicked my finger while cutting some veggies for dinner…”
Great. Now Hitoshi felt stupid. Blinking, he slowly dropped his backpack and made his way over, inspecting the small cut on Izuku’s pointer finger.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to overreact like this,” Hitoshi said, voice low and his hands shaking a bit while holding Izuku’s. He knew that his beloved bunny didn’t like it much when Hitoshi’s protective side broke through like this when it wasn’t necessary. It made him feel like Hitoshi didn’t trust him to take care of himself. And Hitoshi tried, but sometimes, his instincts got the better of him. As usual, Izuku managed to surprise him. The green bunny shifter giggled and pulled Hitoshi in a tight hug, scenting him along the way.
“It’s okay. It was kind of funny to see you standing there ready to fight when nothing had happened. Just wait until I tell Ochako about this.”
Hitoshi groaned. Great. He was not going to live this down any time soon, was he?
“No, you’re not,” Izuku answered and pulled away only to press a quick kiss onto Hitoshi’s lips. “But at least you’re in time for dinner.”
*End!*
