Chapter 1: Aoyama Yuuga

Chapter Text

1
His mother and father are cousins who were arranged into a Quirk marriage. Meaning that the "birth defect" that plagues his Navel Laser is a result of...inbreeding. His parents won't tell him what his family in France was like, only that moving out of France and permanently living in Japan was FAR preferable to staying. Things could've been much worse! Since then, his father became an investor in support items, which eventually led to his trademark, Sparkle Belt.

2
He's very lost when it comes to popular culture. Granted, when he got bullied as a kid, his mother and father bought him plenty of books and CDs to keep him entertained and educated! However, both he and his parents are too sheltered to know what's considered popular these days. I.e., having learned many historical, vintage things, he has no idea what to do with modern memes, manga, music, slang, etc. He appreciates manga with beautiful characters and gorgeous art, but he finds anything dealing with incest, especially Imouto, downright putrid. As in, it genuinely angers him.

3
He went through several phases of "Chuunibyou Syndrome," and he's tried several aesthetics to appeal to his peers' sense of "broody coolness." Like Starving Artist, Avant-Garde Filmmaker, Lonesome Aristocrat, Phantom of the Opera, All with the "nobody understands me" cliché. NONE of these caught on because his emulation attempts came off as cringy, bizarre, pretentious, and out of place in the present-day school environment. Not to mention, it made him far less willing to use his Quirk since he repeatedly put it down.

4
He looks up to Tokoyami. Strange as it may seem, Tokoyami inspired him to STOP being a Chuuni because he does it better anyway. But also because his past phases always notably put his Quirk down, whereas Tokoyami embraced the dark. So, being in the same class as the edgy guy gave him the idea to embrace the light. Not just embrace it! But become a royal and noble knight of the light. He's dazzled ever since that day. So, his current personality appeared relatively recently in his life!

5
He adores massages, spas, and hot baths. It has a lot to do with the fact that his Quirk affects his abdominal nerves. They get overstimulated when he fires his laser for too long, causing abdominal muscle cramps, which flatten his digestive organs. The same happens if he uses his suit to fire it from anywhere else in his body, this isn't counting for the leakage he suffers without his belt. So this kind of self-care is essential to him!

6
He's exceptionally bad at holding conversations with a few exceptions. As one would expect, he's pretty awful at reading the room, has a bad handle on social cues, and tends to default to talking about himself. Unless he legitimately has something he wants to tell others. It's difficult for him to get people's attention meaningfully, so if he does, he will be honest to God and beg others to hear him out until the end. In these cases, he finds it stressful to find the appropriate words to convey his thoughts.

7
He often does extravagant things for his friends. True, he seems highly self-centered. But to people he considers friends, he happily would spend a fortune on them. ESPECIALLY on their birthdays and Christmas. He'll often enlist the help of *ahem* "Santa Claus" to help him deliver such gifts as covertly as possible.

8
He learned how to fence; this was with the help of the Equipped Hero: Yoroi Musha. A very, VERY traditional man whose Quirk is basically to store and draw weapons and armor from his body (Think Erza Scarlet's Requip). He truly enjoyed Aoyama's sense of traditional pride and dignity--yet he wanted to help him fight on, even without his Navel Laser quirk. It was his teachings that inspired Aoyama to come up with his super move: Navel Saber.

9
He is genuinely compassionate towards the disabled. Those whose Quirks don't work as they should or harm themselves in some awful way. Or even those who are Quirkless, whether being born Quirkless or having their Quirk taken away! He wants to protect them--and let them learn that Quirks don't judge their lives; this has made him great friends with Ojiro, being one of the few students capable of truly understanding his plight!

10
He doesn't just want to be a hero, but a modern-day knight; a glorious, glowing, upstanding symbol of justice whose bravery far outshines any of his weaknesses. Even if he must sacrifice himself, he will be a warrior who shines for himself and others. Like Ojiro, perhaps he does this because he wants to prove his doubters wrong and succeed because of his Quirk.
