Chapter 1: Prologue: Saved

Chapter Text

The heroes weren’t going to do anything. Izuku could see it clearly in their eyes. They weren’t budging, insistent that they needed to wait for someone with a better quirk. None of the civilians were willing to do anything either, they were all too scared to move. No-one was willing to help. No-one except Izuku.

The green haired boy dashed through the crowd, making his way towards the burning building. Smoke billowed its way out of the ashen doors and windows, forming a thick cloud up ahead. Izuku could see the civilians that had already been saved being carried away, all of them heading straight towards the numerous ambulances lining up nearby. He could see a few familiar faces among the group, including that of his mother’s, who was worriedly calling out his name. Their eyes locked for a singular moment, and Izuku shook his head gently. Having arrived at the building’s entrance, he looked away and dashed inside, not wanting to see her reaction.

The inside of the building was smokier than outside, making it difficult to breathe. Izuku’s figure was highlighted by bright reds, oranges and yellows, the fire beginning to spread even further. The smell of burning flesh was in the air, that of which belonged to those who couldn’t be saved. He moved forward cautiously, the burning building creaking with every step. In the distance he could hear a girl crying out, begging for someone to come help. Izuku sprinted towards the room it was coming from, bursting through the doorway to see a blonde haired girl struggling to get out from under a fallen pillar. He put both of his arms underneath the pillar, and lifted as much as he could. The girl scrambled out from underneath, her sobs quieting in relief.

“Come on,” Izuku beckoned the girl, and together they ran out of the room that was quickly beginning to fill with flames. His vision was beginning to blur, and he was beginning to find it harder to breathe. The girl was also breathing heavily, but all in all she was looking to be okay. At first Izuku tried to go back through the way he had come in, but the way had been blocked off by fire. The girl waved her hand frantically at Izuku, while he stared at her blurry figure. He quickly realised that she was motioning for Izuku to come with her, and he ran towards her. They dashed through a few more hallways, and the smoke became thicker, while the fire spread further and further. Finally, they reached a door that seemed to lead out of the building.

The girl tried to open it, but it didn’t appear to be working. “It’s locked!” She exclaimed in fear. Izuku felt his eyes beginning to flood with tears as he and the girl continued to try opening the lock to no avail. The fire was getting closer, and the two were panicking, desperate for it to open. He took a few steps back, and then ran at the door as fast as he could, hoping desperately that it would free itself from its position. Finally the door gave way, and the two burst out into an alleyway, frantically trying to catch their breath.

The alleyway itself wasn’t anything significant, just a dumpster off to the side, and some random scrap material on the ground. Once they were a good distance away from the building, they slowed to rest and slumped against the hard brick wall.

“Thank you.” The girl said as she turned towards Izuku, a pained smile on her face. He could see that her body was still tense, almost as if waiting for some kind of criticism.

“I- I’m honestly just really thankful that we both made it out of there alive.” Izuku said with a hesitant smile. Some of the tension faded from the girl’s shoulders, and her grin became even wider. As he was about to ask the girl’s name, he could feel his vision beginning to cloud again. The adrenaline from the rescue was beginning to fade and his body was realising how much it hurt.

Before either of them could say another word, he blacked out.
