Butterflies

Summary:

Butterflies had always been her favorite.

Notes:

This was written for @Padfootless' (on Instagram) writing competition.

There was a longer version but I decided against posting that version because most of the words were unnecessary and I felt the shorter one captured the feeling the best.

Work Text:

“I remember when I first fell in love with you.” Marlene whispered to Dorcas who was half asleep.

******

Marlene sat on a rock on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, “I don’t understand why no one ever comes over here, it’s so pretty.”

Dorcas looked over at her, “It’s because there are rumors of giant spiders living in there. Though that makes no sense, Dumbledore wouldn’t let them  never put anyone in harm's way on purpose.”

“Yeah, I guess.” Marlene said before something that was both yellow and flying caught her eye, “ Oh look! A butterfly!”

Dorcas smiled at Marlene, “Your favorite.”

“You remembered.” At that moment Marlene remembered feeling special, someone had actually remembered butterflies were her favorite.

“Of course I did.”

******

“Are you excited to see the butterflies?” Dorcas asked fastening their overall strap on.

“Very!” Marlene had been excited about this for weeks, she would be able to see her favorite types of muggle butterflies. While she loved magic butterflies they were nowhere near as pretty or as graceful in Marlene’s opinion.

Dorcas kissed Marlene on the cheek, “I know they’re your favorite.”

When they arrived at the park the butterfly garden was part of. Dorcas and Marlene walked through the park and through the forest until they saw flowers of all different kinds. There were signs on the trees with many types of butterflies.

“Look at that yellow one.” Dorcas said pointing to a yellow and black one.

Marlene recognized it as her favorite type, a swallowtail. “That’s my favorite,” she said to nobody in particular.

The pair walked through the garden butterflies occasionally landing near them and staying long enough for a nice picture. When the sky started to turn a pinky-orange color the two headed off towards the trail they came from.

Marlene had had the best day in her life, nothing would ever be able to beat her two favorite things in the world, her girlfriend and butterflies. “Thank you.”

Dorcas smiled, “Anything for you my dear. Anything in the whole world.”

A tear rolled down Marlene’s cheek, how had she gotten so lucky? Either way, she knew she would love her until the end of the line.
