“…Yuu? What are you doing here?” Kenma blinked. Of all the things he expected to open the door to at eight in the evening, he didn’t expect it to be his boyfriend. Especially not when that boyfriend lived outside of Tokyo.
The teeny libero was standing at the door. Kenma guessed that he must’ve boarded the first train that was scheduled for Tokyo after the end of Karasuno’s daily practice - he was wearing his bookbag and had slung his sports bag over his right shoulder. The pockets of his jacket were rounded with something inside. “Surprise!! Happy birthday, KenKen!”
Kenma stood there in silence, his brain wracking for something he could say, trying desperately to keep up with how much this had caught him off guard. How could he be so shocked? Noya was a highly spontaneous person. He knew that. If anything, it was probably more shocking that he hadn’t surprised him in a more extravagant way. But for the life of him, he just couldn’t find any suitable way to respond. He was reduced to idly staring at his boyfriend, which made him appear displeased.
Immediately he was met by the most adorable pouting face he’d ever seen. “Wha- why are you looking at me that way?” Noya blurted out, tilting his head. “I wanted to surprise my boyfriend, who I love more than anyone else in the whole world! Besides, what do they say…? Something about how it’s in giving that we receive, right? And look it that — I love you and making good receives! So that saying is perfect for me!” With a wide grin, he put his hands together, forearms flat as a board, as he got into his signature serve-receive stance.
The setter simply blinked. “I… don’t think that’s how it works,” he finally said. “But hey- uh, you wanna come in? You took the train, right? I know train rides can be hard for you.”
Noya nodded, and Kenma opened the door a little wider to let in his unexpected guest. “Here, let’s go sit on the couch.”
Noya happily followed and sat down next to his boyfriend. Kenma’s golden eyes stared at him for a moment. “You didn’t have to come all the way out here for me,” he mumbled.
“Yeah I did!” Noya protested. “It wouldn’t have been as special if I just mailed you your present. Besides, no way in hell was I about to not see you on your birthday. So…” He handed his boyfriend a gift, which was ostensibly a mess of wrapping paper held together only by tape that had KenKen, with accompanying hearts, written all over it with thick black marker.
“Nice wrapping skills,” Kenma mused, a playful smile on his lips while he started unwrapping it. It didn’t take long for him to pull the paper back and find a case for his Switch with a few character stickers inside. Noya didn’t know much about video games since he wasn’t allowed to play them at home, but he definitely recognized the ones Kenma often beat him with. That had also guided his choice in stickers.
Kenma’s eyes lit up just like they did whenever he bought a new game. “Yuu, I… I love it. How did you know I needed one of these?”
“‘Cause,” Noya said with a nonchalant shrug. “Whenever Nekoma plays Karasuno, I always see you go back to the bench looking worried that something happened to your Switch. And I didn’t want you worrying so bad anymore, so I got this for you. Thought it could help.” He grinned.
Damn, would it kill Noya not to be so adorable? It still melted Kenma’s heart sometimes, just how perceptive and caring his boyfriend could be despite his usual relentlessly carefree disposition.
A warm blush crept onto Kenma’s face, making him melt and smile a bit. “… Mhm, I bet it will.” Suddenly, he buried his face into the crook of his dear boy’s neck and sighed with contentment. “Thanks for the surprise… I… I really appreciate it, Yuu,” he said before looking away. “I love you.”
“I love you too, KenKen,” Noya mused, hugging his boyfriend right back and peppering a slew of kisses onto his cheeks. He patted Kenma on the shoulder one last time before loosening his grip a little and reaching into his bookbag. “Well? You ready for more surprises?”
