Work Text:

Chifuyu was bad at surprises, well he wasn’t bad at coming up with surprises it was more just that he wasn’t very good at hiding them.

It was just another day at the pet shop, or at least that’s what Chifuyu wanted Kazutora to believe, so Kazutora just went a long with it. It was all for his sake anyways. So Kazutora would go with it, pretend that he didn’t know anything and then act surprised when he saw the surprise Chifuyu prepared for him.

And maybe, just maybe Kazutora did that for himself too. He would pretend to forget his birthday and pretend to be surprised every year just to see Chifuyu’s beaming smile when he told Kazutora “Happy Birthday Love.”

So just like every other year, Kazutora pretended that he didn’t remember his birthday. But this time Chifuyu seemed a little off, sure he would be a little fidgety every year when Kazu’s birthday came around, but this time he was just downright nervous. Something that worried Kazutora but he swept it aside, it was probably nothing.

The time passed slowly as Chifuyu became more and more nervous, Kazutora already knew why.

“Hey Kazu, why don’t we go out to eat today. We have done that in a while.” Chifuyu said, closing his locker. His voice cracked a little, probably because of the nervousness Kazutora guessed.

“Sure, do you have a place in mind?”

Chifuyu grinned, the same grin he gave Kazutora every year. “Of course I do,” he said, grabbing Kazutora’s hand as the other put his jacket on. They closed up the shop and got ready to head out.

“This… this is horrible,” Chifuyu mumbled.

It was raining hard. The weather forecast hadn’t said anything about rain this morning, it was just too sudden as if Chifuyu’s plan was set out for failure.

“Let’s just get inside, for now, we can’t drive in this weather,” Kazutora said, wrapping an arm around Chifuyu’s waist and leading him inside the shop.

Chifuyu and Kazutora were sitting in the lounge at the back of the shop. Chifuyu sat in between Kazutora’s outstretched legs, leaning back on his chest with Kazutora’s arms wrapped loosely around him. It was still raining heavily outside, drops of rain hit the lounge window creating a “tip tip tip” sound, there would be the ringing sound of thunder every once in a while followed by a strike of lightning that would illuminate the darkroom since the electricity was out.

“You know Kazu, I had this whole thing planned for us. A picnic in a garden, fairy lights, your favourite foods and a huge cake. And after all of that I would give you a huge surprise and see that stupidly happy smile on your face, but not it’s all ruined cause of this stupid rain.” Chifuyu grumbled.

Kazutora’s heart melted, every year Chifuyu would go through all this trouble just to make Kazutora happy, to make someone who caused him so much pain happy. Chifuyu was just that kind of person, he truly did love with all his might. “It’s ok Fuyu, I’m just glad to be able to spend time with you even if it’s like this.”

“No, it’s not.” Chifuyu pouted. He was silent for a while before he sat up as if a lightbulb had lit up above his head. “I have an idea,” he said, standing up and heading out of the lounge. “And you,” he pointed at Kazutora, “you just stay there.”

A few minutes later Chifuyu had come back, holding something in his hand. It was a cupcake, with a single lit candle sticking on top of it. Chifuyu starched his hand out getting the cake closer to Kazutora, “make a wish” he said, smiling. And in that light, in that specific moment Chifuyu looked ethereal, an angel ascended upon Kazutora to brighten his life up. And Kazutora promised himself that he would never ever hurt this beautiful human again. He closed his eyes and made a wish, wishing that this moment would last forever. The sound of the rain, the scent of the burning candle and Chifuyu.

“I have another gift for you,” Chifuyu said, putting the cupcake down on the table behind him. He put his hand in his pocket and fished out something, Kazutora couldn’t tell what it was, the room was too dark.

“Hanemiya Kazutora, I usually am really good with words but for the first time in a long time, I just don’t know how to say this. We’ve been through a lot together, when I first picked you up all those years ago when you were released from prison I did it for the sake of Baji-San thinking it was something he wanted to do, with that I let you be here with me. Your first few weeks here were a disaster and I was so close to just firing you,” he laughed a little, “But I thought no, I’ll let him stay until he finds something he wants to do, who knew you were just planning to stay here the entire time. And if at that time someone told me that this is where I would be in a few years I would have laughed, but here we are. I know I don’t say this often but Kazutora you are, the love of my life and I am so glad to have picked you that day whether it was for me or someone else, I am so happy that you are in my life right now,” at this point Chifuyu was down on his knees, “So, Hanemiya Kazutora, will you be my husband?” He grinned, opening the velvet box he had held in his hand the entire time to show a gorgeous silver band.

“Fucking idiot,” Kazutora said, pulling up Chifuyu by the face and giving him a kiss, “do you even need to ask,” he said in between the kisses, Chifuyu taking the ring out of the box and putting it on Kazutora’s finger.

“Happy Birthday Love,” he said, giving Kazutora the same smile he had given every year and will give for many more to come.

And maybe, just maybe, Chifuyu was good at planning surprises.
