"Mmm, what is it?" King-Lu asked, stumbling into the kitchen, soaked from the rain.
"Just a strawberry pie," Cookie blushed. He just took the pan out of the oven and was looking at it, assessing the result.
"It smells magnificent."
"You always say that," Cookie answered but still smiled softly.
"I won't be taking objections," King-Lu waved his hand categorically and came closer for a greeting kiss, carefully tilting his head forward not to wet Cookie's clothes, but the cook leaned into the kiss with all his body anyway, like he always did.
In a few sweet moments he blinked, pulled away and hurried to put the kettle on.
"It's too hot," he warned without looking, just in time to stop King-Lu who almost reached to the pie to poke the filling with his finger.
"You know that I don't like waiting," he grunted.
"You don't like getting burnt either," Cookie said wisely and turned to put the cups on the table.
"There's nothing like coming home," King-Lu said suddenly as if he wanted to counter him with his own piece of wisdom.
Cookie froze.
"You really think of here as your home?" he asked in a weak voice.
"Of course, Cookie."
"I thought you preferred being on the road."
"Well. Maybe I've been on the road long enough to start thinking about settling down. And this is the best home a man could hope to have."
"I haven't even hoped to ever find a home," Cookie confessed, his quiet voice now full of tears.
"Hey now," King-Lu took his hand and pulled him closer. "And yet, here we are. Drinking tea and eating your delicious pies. I wouldn't trade this for the world."
Cookie only hummed in agreement into King-Lu's chest.
The kettle came to boil, but they ignored it.
