Work Text:
The first time Dream knew he was in love with George was at a random frat party. Dream only went after much convincing of his friends and George asking once. Because really that was all it took to bring him here.
The brunette was drunk off his mind and Dream was trying to keep him from making any major mistakes. George was almost passing out in the middle of a crowd of people so Dream decided to take him outside. A huge garden with a few people scattered around the corners was the place Dream found.
George ran to the small grass field and Dream ran straight after him. He abruptly stopped and looked up at Dream. Before Dream could question what he was doing George pushed him onto the grass with him.
George started laughing hysterically looking up to the city sky with his dark eyes practically glowing. And right at that moment, as Dream stared at him he realized how completely in love he was. The realization kicked hard and Dream was staring at the boy with a blank face as if he had figured every single secret of the universe.
"George, I think I'm in love with you." He said almost as if he was questioning himself. It slipped out of his mouth really, a thought said out loud.
"What?" George said unamused. "What? Dream, did you say something?" Nodding his head and with a soft smile Dream backed out immediately. "Nothing, nothing"
"Holy shit, Dream you are such an idiot." He had just told Sapnap everything that happened the previous night.
Grunting and rubbing his closed fists into his eyes. "I know." Dream said, extending the word for a few seconds more. "You have to tell him now, Dream, it's now or never and you know that."
Dream did know that, as a matter of fact, he followed Sapnap's advice. Arranged a whole date and prepared to confess to George.
They went together to the beach and were sitting on the empty deck with their legs hanging over the sea. They stayed there till the moon was shining on them and Dream told him everything he felt. Since the day they met and when he found out he liked him. It really was a whole thing, a really dramatic speech, just for in the end George look at him and go: "Sorry Dream, I don't we're on the same page here. But I really hope this doesn't change our friendship."
Dream was not only heartbroken but sitting on the deck on a beach, an hour away from his and George's house, therefore nowhere to run. Before he knew it he started crying, he had tried so hard to keep the emotions inside him throughout his whole speech. And now he was bawling his eyes out in front of George.
"Oh Dream, please don't cry.." George said and hugged Dream in an attempt to comfort him. Which was pretty ironic in George's mind. "I-I'm really sorry George." Dream said through hiccups. "It's okay, I'll take you home. c'mon."
And that was it, George took him home and walked back to his because it was Dream's car. Now, not to say things weren't awkward, because they really fucking were. Dream was obviously still in love with George and George didn't like him back. However, George did love Dream, just not the way Dream wanted him to. George loved Dream so much that he did everything to not let Dream distance himself from him.
But for the first months or so, it was really uncomfortable. George felt like he was taking advantage of Dream's feelings towards him whenever he asked for something. And Dream felt he was taking advantage of George's pity whenever he asked for something. So, they didn't talk that much.
George really missed Dream and Dream was still in love with George.
Six months after the confession, things started to go back into place. George called a few friends to his house, Dream included, and things were seeming to get better. Dream was on the couch with George and it was the closest they had ever been physically, since George hugged Dream.
They were exchanging slight touches and soft giggles the whole night. "Dream, I really missed you, or, I mean, I missed us." Dream smiled lightly. "Yeah, me too." George laughed and went straight to rolling his eyes again. "Ok, idiot." "What?! You're the idiot, George."
That night Dream went home and cried himself to sleep, after staring at the ceiling in the silence of his room. He couldn't do it, it was too overwhelming for him and it took too much of what he could ever give. So, he started seeing someone.
It was a dumb idea and it didnt even last a month but it worked. His friends all were happy for him and, unfortunately, George especially. Saying how it was a great thing for him and he was happy he found someone emphasizing on how he was: "really, really happy for you Dream, like actually, this is good, for you, I guess, yeah, I'm really happy for you or you both, I don't know."
After the breakup, Dream actually felt better. He didn't even really like them and it obviously wasn't going to work out. George took him for ice cream, as a joke, but it was probably better than everything he had done the last month.
"I'm really sorry it didn't work out for you guys Dream." George said, seeming very genuine. "Nah, it's okay, I even got some ice cream out of it so in retrospect.." George laughed at that, just like that day they were lying on the grass. "Oh, shut up" George said, rolling his eyes. And Dream realized just like that day that he didn't feel the butterflies in his stomach and an undenying crush on the brunette. What to do with that information, he didn't really know.
Finally the year passes by and Dream suggests their friend group do this crazy road trip together. They all agree and spend most of their time planning everything out. The night before the trip, unpromptedly, Dream showed up at George's house.
"Dream? What are you doing here?." George opened his door wearing an oversized hoodie and black jeans. "Wait? George! That's my hoodie, I can't believe you stole it." A blush? Dream guesses seemed to creep onto George's face. "Did you come all the way here to tell me that because I'm not giving it back if that's what you're wondering." Dream didn't really mind him taking the hoodie. "No, no, you can keep it, I just wanted to see if you wanted to grab ice cream with me."
"Oh."
"Oh?"
"Nothing, of course I'll go, I just need to grab my stuff."
It was nice, they spent more time out then Dream intended but he didn't mind. "Fuck, it's 3am, didnt we need to leave at like 7?" Dream laughed at George not realizing it was so late, considering the store was practically empty for hours and not even the cashier was there. "Yeah, but it's okay, we're not even driving so we can sleep in the car." George nodded and laughed as well. "True but we should head home anyway."
So they left and if any of their friends realized that both of them were tired and slept through the beginning of the trip, they didn't mention it.
-
George realized he was in love with Dream a few hours ago and was devastated. They had slept most of the car drive and George woke up leaning on Dream's shoulder, slightly embarrassed.
The car was blasting music and they were all shouting the lyrics together. Sapnap who was driving said the car had a window ceiling and opened it for them to stand with their heads outside. So George climbed out the window with his torso sticking out and a strong wind on his face. Suddenly he felt someone else climbing up to the window and next thing he knew him and Dream were screaming together while their laughs got caught in the wind.
Then George realized, as he saw Dream's hair being pulled by the wind and his laughs almost unhearable by the music from the car. He was in love with him but instead of this bright and illuminating realization he felt sick to his stomach and felt like throwing up. Which he did. They stopped at the side of the road and George threw up while Dream held his back. Everybody then expressed they felt like it wasnt a good idea for George to go back onto the window ceiling after that, to which George agreed.
He couldn't tell anybody and didn't know what to do, so he kept it to himself for the next few days. However, everybody noticed how he now avoided Dream at all costs. He didn't know why he did but he got so nervous around the blond. And felt he wasn't being honest with his friend, so, instead of telling him the truth he avoided him.
It was until after they went camping and everybody had gone to sleep in their tents and George was sitting alone at the campfire. Till Dream appeared next to him and slightly nodded his head for George to follow him. Dream led them to the car and looked at George expecting him to say something. "George, are you okay? I feel like I did something that made you upset but I don't know what."
George felt like crying, everything was bubbling inside him and he felt like he was going to drown inside himself. "Dream, if I tell you something, will you promise to not get mad?" Dream looked at him confused. "Mad? George, why would I get mad at you, you can tell me anything."
George finally looked up at him. "Anything?" Dream looked back at him. "Anything."
"I'm in love with you." George said as if he was confessing to a crime. Like he had messed up really bad. He had avoided eye contact expecting Dream to look disappointed at George. The boy who had broken his heart and now found himself in the same situation but much worse. Dream hadn't said anything in a while and when George looked at him he almost cried.
Everything he wished Dream wouldn't look like, was everything he looked like. Disappointed, confused, distressed, you name it. "Say something, please." George managed to say.
"Why now George? Why not a year ago?"
"I don't know, I'm sorry." George said as tears started to form in his eyes. He hated this, he hated being vulnerable and he hated being in love with Dream.
"Well, I don't know what to say because I spent a year ignoring everything I felt for you." George cutted him off. "I didn't tell you to ignore it, Dream, you can't blame me for that."
"Oh, but you did, George, you made me ignore it and now I don't think I can bring back the boy who confessed to you at the deck."
"So, what do I do Dream?" George said cheeks stained tears he tried so hard to keep in.
"Ignore it." And Dream walked away.
