Phone Call

Summary:

Lonnie told Scorpia that if she couldn't sleep that she could call her. This time, Scorpia brings some news with her

Notes:

I posted this on Wattpad back in August and I'm quite proud of it, so I'm putting it here as well :)

Work Text:

The oh-so familiar chorus of "Honeypie" by JAWNY began to eminate from Lonnie's cellphone, waking her from her sleep. In the darkness she grumbled, annoyed and squinting at the beam of light emanating from her nightstand. She leaned over to read the caller idea and smiled sleepily, shaking her head.

"Why am I not surprised?" Rasped the sleepy girl. The caller happened to be Scorpia, one of Lonnie's friends. The two had met six months ago at a local band's basement show. Over the course of those six months, Scorpia and Lonnie had become close friends. So close, in fact, that Lonnie told Scorpia that she could call her whenever she couldn't fall asleep. This was because Scorpia was ADHD, and one of the many traits of that neurodivergence was struggling to fall asleep.

Lonnie was beginning to regret that. With an eye roll, Lonnie picked up her phone and and slid the talk symbol up. She immediately clicked speaker, laid back down, and set the phone on her chest. "Goodmorning, Scorpia." The half-awake girl said, voice cracking with tiredness.

"Goodmorning to you too, Lon! How's it goin'?" Scorpia said half-jovially. Her voice was laced with fatigue, and she was clearly putting in effort to sound happy.

"Not great," said Lonnie, "Just got woken up by a chronic insomniac."

Scorpia chuckled from the other end of the line. "My apologies!"

"It's fine," the other girl mumbled, "It's only three am."

"Oh, geez! That sure is late!"

"Mhmm!" Lonnie hummed, a yawn following it.

"I can go if you'd like!" Scorpia offered "I know you've got work, in like, three hours."

Then why'd you call me?! Lonnie screamed in her brain. However, she wasn't going to let herself be mean to her friend.

She took a deep breath, sighed, and continued. "No, it's fine. Stay. Can't promise I won't fall asleep, though."

"That's fine by me, pal! I just wanted a little company. The knowledge that you're on the other end is soothing."

Lonnie's eyes fluttered shut and she smiled. "Awe, Scorpia. Thanks." She mumbled sleepily. She couldn't make herself sound enthusiastic if she tried to; all the energy she had left was used to answer the phone call.

"Actually," admitted Scorpia, "There's something I've been meaning to tell you."

"Whazzat?"

"I called you because I missed the sound of your voice."

Lonnie blinked slowly in the darkness. Did I hear her correctly? She sat up in her bed, phone sliding off her chest and onto the blanket. "Uh... Thanks?"

"Yeah," The white-haired girl said. "I didn't want to forget my best pal Lonnie's voice, is all! We text, mostly, and you haven't sent a voice message in a while, so my memory was growing foggy."

Lonnie's face burned in the darkness. What do I say? "Uh. That means a lot, Scorpia. Thank you."

"I'll let you go, now, buddy," Scorpia said, "That's all I had to tell you. Glad we could talk a little. B-"

"Scorpia, wait a second." Lonnie interjected.

"Sure, Lon! What's up?"

There was silence on both ends of the call. Lonnie's heart pounded in her chest.

"I... missed your voice, too, dude."

"Awe, thanks, Lon!" Scorpia rasped, "That's so sweet of you!"

"Yeah. You're welcome, I guess." Lonnie placed her and behind her head and shrugged, as if Scorpia would see her body language.

"Well, goodnight bro! See you tomorrow!" The call ended there.

Lonnie listened the phone giving the typical beep of "this call has ended" but didn't move. She simply plopped back down onto her pillow and sighed heavily.

"... Why am I so gay?"
