Shifting Sights

Summary:

Blood roared in her fluffed pointed ears as she ran through the starlit forest. Shadowed trees towered over her accelerating form, as malice filled shots and shouts followed quickly behind. Leaves and twigs crinkled under her claw tipped paws as she contemplated how she would escape them this time.

Everest is just your normal every day collage student, with a kinda steady job and a cat, and then things turn for the worst whet the past she thought she had left behind comes back to haunt her in the most awful spectacular way possible.

Notes:

Slight hint of this happening before, but it was a little to much effort for me to work through if I wanted to post it now. Slight warning for the bullet wound its brief but it's there .

Work Text:

Blood roared in her fluffed pointed ears as she ran through the starlit forest. Shadowed trees towered over her accelerating form, as malice filled shots and shouts followed quickly behind. Leaves and twigs crinkled under her claw tipped paws as she contemplated how she would escape them this time. Her panicked wolf form bounded even harder forward as she heard the almost silent click of one of their guns, preparing for the worst

A loud bang rings through the not so still night and Everest staggered in her steps, the bullet barely grazing her furred leg. “Crap, crap, crap!”, she thought as the shouts of the hunters grew closer. She hadn’t wanted to shift so soon, especially with the hunters in range of her, but it seemed she had no other choice if she wanted to lose them without any more injury. Everest slowed only slightly, as her formerly wolfish body glimmered and shifted, like the bright moon just above in the sky. In the blink of an eye, there was no longer a wolf, but a stark black owl gliding low on the forest floor. Surprised shouts exclaimed from behind as the hunters tried to shoot the rising owl out of the sky, “Don’t let it get away!” one said, “Shoot it down!”, another yelled.

Everest grimaced as much as an owl could. She never liked shifting, especially while injured, but it was leagues ahead of what she would be experiencing if she had stayed on the ground with those hunters. She should have never stayed here as long as she had, she should have known better, but the Kentucky air and people had lulled her into a false sense of security. Now she had to find a way to recover her things from her small apartment without being found, but also had to find a new place to stay before it rained or snowed next. Suddenly she remembered her last conversation with Azerith, one of the only friends from her home that she had been able to stay in contact with over the years.

It had been a while ago, but his exact words had been, “You can come visit me anytime you want, Christ knows how you haven't gotten yourself killed without me already.” If she remembered correctly, he was only a few hundred miles away from where she thought she was in regards to location, only about 4 to 5 hours of flying for her. She just had to hope that he was there when she arrived, and that he still had room for her in his small set up in the Texan wilderness. She would probably force him to let her stay anyway, seeing as this was partially his fault for suggesting the last place she stayed. The sun peeked over the horizon to say a final goodbye to the night, as Everest neared her destination. It took a little longer than she had
hoped, but she could finally see the quaint log cabin in the distance, with the chimney still
spewing smoke, that belonged to her fellow shifter.

She glided to a stop at the door and knocked, as she waited the exhaustion of her flightand escape finally caught up to her. “ The hell is at my door at like 6 in the morning,”Azarith grumbled as he opened the door, only to be met with the sight of a slightly delirious Everest at the foot of his door. “ Sup loser,” she said. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was the surprised face of her long time friend and the thought “Haha, he looks like a surprised Pikachu.”

Notes:

This is my first real attempt at an original story, or any coheriant story that's got characters other than myself for that matter. This was an assignment for class so I had to have it done by a certain time, or else the characters might have been a bit more thought out. Hope you enjoyed and I'm always open to comments and criticism! Have a good day or night!
