Returning the jumper

Summary:

Maeve found Otis and Ola kissing. What could have happened if instead of running away, she had decided to return the jumper and let herself dream for something good for once?

Story set in an alternative universe (AU) that diverges from the show at the end of S1.

Chapter Text

Maeve knew she had been an idiot. She had wasted so much time trying to salvage her relationship with Jackson when deep down she knew it was over. After receiving the trophy and reading the letter, Maeve realised that it would be stupid to keep denying her feelings for Otis; she wanted to be with him. She knew that she needed to speak with him as soon as possible.

When Maeve arrived at Otis’ house, she saw Otis and Ola kissing. Part of her wanted to run, and she almost did to be honest. But the rest of her wanted to take any chances she had with Otis.

Being out of school after being expelled, with her family leaving her alone again, with only Aimee as a friend and person that she could trust, Maeve knew that she needed Otis more than ever to be able to navigate the situation. If anyone could make her life better, it was him.

She hoped he was talking about her in the speech during the ball. Sure, at that very moment he was kissing Ola and she might be wrong, but she needed him to know that she wanted to be with him. She also thought that the words from Otis about people that don't like you back would make no sense if they were for Ola since they had gone to the ball together. Those words had to be about her, she was sure of it.

So, she steeled herself and marched on, hoping for the best.

As Otis and Ola finished kissing, Maeve walked down the stairs.

“Hi Otis. Hello Ola.”

She wasn't oblivious to the look Ola was giving her, but she didn't care.

“Hello Maeve, what are you doing here?” Asked a totally surprised Otis.

“First, I have come to give you the jumper back. Thanks for letting me have it. And second...”

She stopped there. She was more nervous than she had ever felt. She was feeling really vulnerable, and she didn't like that, but she knew she couldn't do anything about it.

“What happens, Maeve?” Otis asked after noticing something was amiss.

She sighed. After that, she pulled him for a kiss. The contact of their lips sent electricity all over her body. She was sure she had never felt the same before.

As they parted away Maeve spoke. “I like you Otis and after your speech last night I think there is a chance that you also like me. And if that's true I want to be with you. I have never met someone like you, nor anyone has ever made me feel the same as you. After the ball I told you to stay away from me, but that was a mistake, I don't want that. I want you to be the closest anyone has ever been in my life. Now that I have been expelled, I really can't afford to lose you, Otis. I need you more than ever right now.”

A completely startled Otis took a few seconds to speak. “Maeve… I don't even know what to say.”

“It's ok. I know I'm making things complicated for you right now, and I'm sorry for that, but I needed you to know in case I have any chance to be with you.”

“I...”

She put her finger over Otis' mouth. “If you need time, take it as much as you need. And if you want to talk with me, you know where to find me.”

She gave him a small smile before going away. She didn't like the amount of pressure that she had put on Otis, but if she had any chance with him, she was ready to do whatever it took.

In the meanwhile, Otis and Ola stayed there without knowing what to say.

“Ola, I don't know...”

“Maeve’s right, take your time.” She also left leaving a completely speechless Otis that was out of his mind.

When he recovered his consciousness, he realised that he had got an erection, but this time it felt different, it no longer felt weird, it just felt natural. He ran into the bathroom and started to wank, he tried to remember how the kisses had felt, and as good as the one with Ola was, it was no match for the one with Maeve, that one had sent a wave of heat all over his body.

However, as he solved his little friend problem, he realised that he had to take a decision between the two girls.

He met with Eric and explained him the whole situation.

“What should I do, Eric?”

“You already know.”

“If I did, I wouldn't have asked you for advice.”

“You know, don't lie to yourself.”

“But I like both Ola and Maeve.”

“You may like Ola, but what you feel for Maeve is much more than that. I have known you for years and I have never seen you as when you are around her. You have the opportunity to be with the girl of your dreams, don't throw it.”

“But leaving Ola for Maeve wouldn't make me an arsehole like my dad?”

“Your dad’s an arsehole because he cheated on Jean. As long as you’re honest with them there isn’t a problem.”

“I guess you’re right Eric. Thanks for the advice.”

“You are welcome, Oatcake.”

“Do you want to play some Smash?”

“Yeah, let's play one more time just in case any of the girls kills you.” Eric could see Otis gulping. “I'm kidding. Or at least I hope so.” He added jokingly, even if Otis didn’t find that funny.

Maeve, needing someone to talk with at that moment went to Aimee’s house to speak with her best friend. She explained her all of what happened.

“That you did what, Maeve?” Asked a totally surprised Aimee.

“I was really impulsive. I didn’t think much about it. I feel bad for the situation in which I put Otis, but I needed him to know about how I felt. If there is any chance for us to be together, I’m going to take it.”

“I hope this work for you, I have never heard of you speaking of someone like you’re speaking of Otis.”

“I hope that too.”

The following day Otis went to Ola’s house to talk with her.

“I know what you’re going to say. I saw how you look at Maeve during the ball and how she looked at you.”

“I’m sorry, this is not what I expected.”

“I can’t blame you for preferring a lioness to a goat.” She smiled at him. She liked Otis, but she knew that he only had eyes for Maeve.

“I’m also incredibly sorry for that, I didn’t mean anything bad.”

“I know.”

“I really hope that you can find someone that see you like a lioness.”

“It’s ok, some things are meant to be, and some don’t. Maeve and you make sense in a way we never did. There are no hard feelings from my part.”

“Thanks for being so understanding.”

“We had fun anyway and since it seems we will keep seeing each other, we can keep hanging around. I believe we would be great friends.”

“I would like that.”

As he finished, he took his bike and went to Maeve's trailer. As nervous as he could get, he knocked the door.

“Hi Otis.” Seeing Otis there the day after made Maeve really nervous, she expected Otis to take more time to make any decision. However, him being so quick to come to her made Maeve feel somewhat hopeful that he was going to choose her.

“Hello Maeve. Can I come in?” He said with a smile.

“Yeah. Make yourself comfortable.”

When the 2 had sat, Otis started to speak. “How are you?”

“I have had better moments.” She replied. ‘I hope this ends up being a good one though.’ She thought.

“I guess you want to know about what I have decided.”

“Yeah.” She murmured nervously.

“You know Maeve, I thought it would take a while for me to make a decision, I never expected a girl to like me, much less two at the same time. But it has been incredibly easy. I like you, Maeve. I want you and I to be an us.”

“You do?” Maeve incredulously asked.

“Yes.” He replied confidently.

She couldn’t stop herself from crying, releasing everything she had bottled for so long.

The way in which Otis hugged her, meant everything to her. Knowing that she was going to have Otis by her side made her brave enough to believe that she was going to be able to tackle any obstacle.

As Maeve had finished crying, Otis gave her the jumper back.

“Now it's yours.” He said with a smile.

“Thanks. It’s nice to have it, it brings me a lot of nice memories.”

“Same here.”

“Not just about the day of the day we almost kissed at the bridge, but also all the moments I held it close to me so I could remember you even if I didn’t realise at that time. I had it under my pillow so it would never be far away. I should have realised my feelings when I sniffed it a while back.”

“You sniffed it?”

“Yes. I was arranging some clothes I had just washed, and I saw it. I just sniffed it without even considering what I was doing.”

“That doesn’t sound a Maeve thing to do.” He teased.

“You have changed me, dickhead.”

“I hope it’s for the best.”

“You can say that I guess.” She grinned.

“Thanks for this new opportunity.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I would do my best to never mess up so much.”

“You better.” She pointed at him in a fake-menacing way.

He chuckled.

Finally, she pulled him for a kiss, she couldn’t wait anymore. This one was even better than their previous one since finally they knew they wanted to be with each other.

“You look happy.” He teased as the kiss ended.

“I’m happy.”

“Do I have to do anything with that?”

“Maybe.”

“Do you want to do something?”

“We can watch a movie.”

“Of course.”

They cuddled on the sofa watching some random movie that was on TV at that moment. They really didn’t care about what they were watching they were just happy to be there with each other. For Maeve it was only her second time between Otis’ arms, however they already felt like home to her. In his arms she could forget about all the shit going in her life while feeling that there was someone that actually cared for her, and that was all she had ever been looking for.

At one point during the movie that the 2 were ignoring, Otis took her hand and looked at her.

“Maeve.”

“What's up?”

“Would you like to be my girlfriend?”

“What?!”

“I'm sorry if it's too soon or anything, but I would like that.”

“No, I didn't mean that. I was just surprised that you have asked me that so soon.”

“I like you and you like me. We already know each other quite well. I don't see any reason to wait.”

“I don't want to wait either, so you can call me your girlfriend, Milburn.”

“My pleasure, Wiley.”

They kissed letting their passion speak.

As they parted Maeve stayed looking at Otis’ eyes, she loved them, and knowing she was the only girl that she had those eyes for made her feel incredibly special.

They spent the rest of the afternoon and part of the night together, doing whatever, just caring about being with the other.

Before leaving Otis gave her a kiss that sent Maeve to the moon.

“See you tomorrow then.” He said to a Maeve who couldn’t stop looking at him in complete awe.

“See you.”

As Otis left, she couldn’t believe how everything had turned out. She couldn’t avoid jumping out of pure happiness.
