If I could tell her

Summary:

One night Fuyumi is out late when she meets a certain villain. They have a talk and Fuyumi realizes some things.

Kinda alternate universe and they're both ooc.

Work Text:

This was written before the whole official Dabi = Touya thing, so they're both lowkey out of character. But it's sappier than whatever the heck is going on in the manga...

It was late and Fuyumi shivered from the cold. Why did she agree to help her new colleague with his assignments again? Ah yes, because she was a nice person. And because she didn't know, that he would end the day by asking her out. If the white-haired woman had known that, she'd never agreed to help him. He was nice, not unattractive, but not in a romantic way.
Fuyumi started walking home, completely lost in her thoughts, when suddenly she heard a sound behind her, footsteps following afterward. The woman turned around and was frightened, when she saw a black-haired, tall man, with scars covering wide parts of his face and arms. „Dabi", Fuyumi whispered, as she recognized the villain, that had cost many lives the last few months, and was involved in the kidnapping of her younger brother's classmate. He didn't respond, just looked at her, with those piercing blue eyes, which reminded her not only of her father, but also her lost older brother. „What do you want from me?", the young teacher asked. „Me? I just wanted to talk to you." He approached her slowly as if he wasn't sure if she was going to make a run for it. Fuyyumi wanted to, she really did. She knew that this man was a murderer that he had tried to hurt her little brother, but still, she just couldn't bring herself to run away. Her legs just wouldn't move, so she had no other choice, than listening to what Dabi had to say. „Having a friendly chat out here might not be the best idea", he stated, before surprisingly careful grabbing Fuyumi's wrist and pulling her into an alley. „W-wait, I never agreed to go anywhere with you!", she declared, stumbling after him, trying to get out of his grasp.
Much to her surprise, he let her go. Only to point at a ladder next to them. „Up", the slender man spoke. Obediently Fuyumi did as she was told, not wanting to anger him. „I still don't think this is a good idea", the white-haired woman proclaimed. „Don't worry. If I wanted to kill you, I would've already done it", Dabi assured her. „Who said I was worried about being murdered? You do know that you're a part of the league of villains, right?" To say she was surprised when the man snickered at her statement would be understated. „Still the same sense of humor I see", he whispered, and Fuyumi was sure, he didn't want her to hear that. But since he hadn't done anything to hurt her yet, she decided to take the risk, and just ask: „What do you mean, still the same? I don't think we've met before." If Dabi hadn't been a dangerous criminal, she might have laughed at his shocked face. Instead, she just giggled slightly, hoping he wouldn't be offended by that. „You heard tha-Ah, fuck. Ok. So, ya know, I may or may not, know your brother." Fuyumi froze. Her brother? She knew he wasn't talking about Shouto, they had fought against each other. Natsuo couldn't be it either. That wouldn't make any sense. So, it could only be- „Touya? You know Touya?", she asked, hoping he'd say yes while wishing he wouldn't. Dabi nodded and leaned his back against the border of the roof. „Yeah. And I just wanted to know, if you are as great, as he always claimed you were." Fuyumi was surprised. Touya had talked about her? Why? „What do you mean by great?"
"He thought you were awesome", the other began. „He thought I was awesome, my brother?" That couldn't be true. „Definitely!" „How?" What did her brother really think about her? „Well, he said, there's nothing like you smile, sort of subtle and perfect, and real." Fuyumi couldn't help but slightly smile at that statement. „He said, you never knew how wonderful that smile could make someone feel." She looked up at the sky, wondering if this was really true. „And he knew, whenever you'd get bored, you'd scribble stars on the cuffs of your jeans." It seemed like the villain was starting to really get the hang of it, talking more freely, like he actually meant the things he said. But that, that just couldn't be. They didn't even know each other. „And he noticed that you still fill out the quizzes, that they put in these teen magazines." It was a childish thing, a habit that she had kept way too long. And it fascinated her, that her brother would pay attention to details like it. „But he kept it all inside his head, what he saw he left unsaid. And though he wanted to, he couldn't talk to you. He couldn't find the way but he would always say." The man took a deep breath before he continued: „If I could tell her, tell her everything I see if I could tell her, how she's everything to me. But we're a million worlds apart, and I don't know, how I would even start."
Fuyumi didn't even realize that she had started to cry, until Dabi moved towards her, softly wiping the tears away. And Fuyumi, she couldn't help but lean into the tender touch, that was so familiar to her, and yet totally different. Different, because this wasn't her brother, familiar, because it felt like it. But it made her feel good, even though she knew, now wrong it was. This was one of the most wanted villains in Japan, and yet here she stood, and couldn't help but ask: „Did he say anything else?" He looked surprised, as he answered: „A-about you?" Fuyumi felt stupid. „Nevermind, no, Idon'treallycare-" „Nono, he just, he said, he said so many things, and I'm just trying to remember the best ones." A little ashamed, but still expectant she looked at him. „He thought, it looked really pretty that you have indigo streaks in your hair!" „He did?" Dabi lightly laughed, at her skeptical expression, but nodded. „And he wondered, how you learned to dance, like all the rest of the world isn't there."At that, Fuyumi started to cry again. She still remembered, one of the times, where they all were allowed to be together. Shouto had been three, and they wanted him to have a good time. So, they had all shown off their best dance moves and made a competition out of it. Even their mother had participated. It was one of her happiest memories. Looking Dabi in the eyes, she realized, that he seemed to feel the same way. Even though he couldn't know, what she was thinking about, and even if, he hadn't been there. Or, was he?
The more she began to think about, to actually led it in, the more she believed it. They had the same eyes, their quirks were alike, his voice sounded like Touyas, just rougher. But the thing, that made her actually realize it, was the way he had touched. Exactly the way, Touya had always done. It felt like him too. Even with the scars. And when, with a new realization in her eyes, Fuyumi looked up, to meet Dabi's, Touya's, gaze, she saw that he knew. Slowly, not wanting to scare him, Fuyumi lifted her hand towards his face, softly caressing his cheek. And then, she said it: „Is it really you, Touya?" He nodded, and Fuyumi didn't think any further, and just hugged him. She threw her arms around his side, burying her face in his chest, crying and sobbing. After a few seconds, she felt arms around her, pulling her impossibly closer. They stayed like that for a while, before Touya whispered: „But what do you do when there's this great divide?" „You just seemed so far away." „And what do you do when the distance is too wide?" She knew, what he was trying to say. He was a villain. This was dangerous. For both of them. And their other siblings. And they both knew that. „And how do you say, I love you." „I love you too. I always have, Touya, and I always will!" They finally broke apart. Their eyes met once again, and now she could see all the emotions bottled up inside of him. Anger, that their father was the person he was, sadness because he did horrible things, guilt since he left them alone, and a lot of others, that looked too complicated for her to understand. But she could make out the most important one for her. Love. For her, for Natsuo, even for Shouto. The family he had wanted to protect. „I'm so sorry." It was barely more than a whisper, but she could hear it. Like it was the only sound in the world. „Me too", she answered. „I should have been able to take care of Shouto. And mom.And you. Then you wouldn't have to become like this." His eyes widened before he replied: „None of this is your fault. It's mine and his fault. No matter what you say, you were only a child back then. We all were. Alright?" She looked away, not being convinced at all. „Please Fuyumi, look at me." She had to. Her head moved up again, only to be met with the most pleading look she had ever seen from him. „Promise me, you won't give you the fault for this anymore?" „I promise", she squeezed out. She couldn't decline. He always knew what to say to her to give in. „Good. And now, I believe it's time for you to finally go home." She looked at her phone and realized that nearly one hour had gone by since they met. „You're right. I should go. Just, please, stay safe." She knew that was a crazy thing to tell him. He has killed people for god's sake, but she just couldn't stop loving him „I'll try my best." he said and smiled. She smiled back and made her way towards the ladder before she turned around one final time to ask: „Please, don't let them hurt Shouto." And she wasn't sure if she truly heard the quiet „I will", or if it was her imagination, wanting him to reply like that.

I wrote this on Wattpad like 1 and a half years ago and now I have an ao3 account, so I thought I'll just post it here too. That's the first fanfic I've ever written in English... So please try to overlook any grave mistakes. I know they're there. I'm just too lazy to correct them atm.
