This was meant to be Lando's weekend

Summary:

This was meant to be Lando's weekend but when it all went wrong with 3 laps to go, he wants the one person who's not there...

Work Text:

Disappointment coursed through his body. His limbs ached and his heart hurt. It was his victory to take. It was until he fucked up.

Useless. Stupid. Worthless. The words echoed around his head. His fingers clawed at his head, desperately trying to ease the ache of this pain.  He pressed the palms of his hands to his eyes, desperately hoping the pressure would keep his tears inside. He had pushed through the paddock, straight to his hotel room.  The lure of an empty space, away from prying eyes had appealed. He had turned off the lights, pulled the curtains and settled into the dark abyss of his room. If he couldn't have the thrill of the victory, this was what he deserved.

He longed to have familiar fingers running through his hair. He longed to feel the warmth of a body pulling him into a much needed hug. He longed to hear the comforting words, telling him that everything was alright, that his time would come soon. But the one he longed for was nowhere near. They were separated by an ocean. An ocean that right now, seemed so far away.

The sound of his phone ringing brought him back to the present. He almost ignored it, not wanting anyone to see him like this. But by doing that, he almost ignored the only person he wanted to see. He reached his hand out from the warmth of his duvet haven and fumbled for his phone. It was like Max knew how much Lando needed him right now. Just the sight of his name brought a smile to his tear stained face.

"Lan...." He whispered softly. Seeing Max's concerned face and hearing the worry laced in his voice tugged at his heartstrings. It made him wish more than ever that he was currently curled on the sofa with Max, watching a crappy movie. The thought of what he really wanted right now brought a fresh wave of tears to his eyes. He wanted to be in England, wanted to be home with Max.

At the sound of Lando's sobbing, Max sighed sadly. He wanted to ease the pain, wanted to hold Lando. But there was still a long time to wait.

"Hey Lan... You drove fucking amazingly today babe. It wasn't your fault that it rained! Your time will come Lando, I know it will..."

The kind words eased the ache in Lando's heart. By this point, his tears had stopped and he smiled weakly at Max. The other man always knew how to make him feel better. They spoke for a while before Lando had to make his way to the airport.

---
When Lando arrived home, the world was dark. He felt beyond exhausted, having travelled for hours. The only thing that had kept him going was the knowledge that Max was waiting for him.

He carefully opened the door and gently shut it behind him. He slipped his shoes off and placed his suitcase down. He was trying to be quiet, not wanting to disturb Max when it was so late.

He had expected to climb beneath the covers and slip his arms around Max's sleeping body. So the sound of the other man made Lando jump and his heart begin to quicken.

"You don't have to be quiet Lan, welcome home!"

Lando smiled, the sight of a dishevelled and sleep deprived Max before him looked irresistible. He was wearing nothing more than boxers slung low around his hips and one of Lando's hoodies around his shoulders. He stepped forwards and into Max's arms. As Lando tucked his head into Max's shoulder, he felt the pain and stress of the day ease away. He was home, this was where he belonged. This was where he was happy, curled into Max's arms.
