Work Text:
Darkness was an all-too familiar sight for the god. It was very rarely that he strayed from his realm in the shadows, especially where it concerned the mortals. GeorgeHD was not only a god of darkness and the moon, but he was a creator god. Despite his lack of insight in the very creatures that he helped create, they did often intrigue him.
HD floated in the void of the realm he called home. Even the darkness no longer beckoned to him as it once had since DreamXD’s departure. XD was also a god of creation, but unlike HD, he basked in the presence of the mortals. The two had been together for as long as the world had been and they had spent most of their time with each other. With the centuries of contact had come the inevitability of love between the two.
The gods had fallen in love.
Even with the very opposite views the gods had held, they had managed to fall in love. And with that love they had brought the Dream SMP into being. Carbon copies of themselves had been created at the prodding of HD and XD had agreed with a swift kiss on the former’s cheek.
“What if we were able to use them as vessels as well?” XD had asked his lover as the first mortals went about their new lives in this world they had created. HD had hummed in consideration, his immaculate eyebrows knitting together in thought. XD leaned in and kissed between the other’s eyebrows in a quick peck and HD batted him away playfully, “Fine fine. If we see fit to join their world, we can use them as vessels.” He had agreed with a fond smile at the other, watching the divine features upon his face light up in excitement.
XD had always found intrigue in the mortals, so HD’s agreement had set off yet another inevitable chain of events-XD had eventually found his way to the mortal world. HD had proposed that in order for the vessels to actually be vessels, they would leave their essence slumbering away in the humans’ bodies for when they chose to leave the realm.
After XD’s departure, HD had become more interested in the mortal’s lives, hoping that seeing the world through his copy’s eyes would allow him to see his love again. At first he hadn’t seen him, but he had come to realize that something odd happened because of the god’s presence in George’s body-George and Dream had fallen in love, same as the gods they were modelled after. HD had been shocked, watching through George’s eyes as he looked at Dream. HD did not need to know how George had felt at seeing the man, as he could feel the ache in his chest at looking at the man so similar to his love.
It had been a joke to create Dream and George, a monument to his love for XD in choosing to leave their very essence in those humans, and in doing so, they had doomed them to the same fate as the two gods; to be in love evermore, even if their paths no longer intertwined. HD had almost felt bad for the humans for this supposed curse, except for the fact that his love for XD had made existing in a dark void worth living, and that George loved deeply despite not showing it, and he knew he would be stronger for it. He also had something to fight for, if he chose to.
HD knew it would be easier if he had simply awoken his essence in George, but his intrigue in the human’s love had been far too enthralling to him. He didn’t want to interrupt what was happening between Dream and George so he could go off in pursuit of XD.
HD lounged in the void, his billowing royal blue and gold cloak falling around him as he watched through George’s eyes one day when his breath suddenly caught. There stood XD (not really stood, more floated), his dark green cloak billowing around him. He wore a mask similar to Dream’s, except the face was carved differently-it sported an x shaped eye and a wide, open mouthed smile.
“XD…” HD murmured as he watched the creature follow in George’s line of sight. His posture had gone rigid at seeing the god exactly as he had been in their realm. What was he doing showing the mortal his true form, and how had he managed to bring his godly form into the mortal world? Nothing the mortals did had made HD want to awaken in George’s body, but seeing his love standing before the impostor the two had created, he had paused in his thinking.
To be completely honest, though, HD wasn’t sure how the essence being infused in the human would allow him to detach himself once he was there. If he were to join the mortals, would he be stuck there due to the plan the two had hatched in the mortals’ creation? Or would he be able to leave if he wanted to return to his familiar void?
He wanted more than anything to join XD as a wave of longing shivered through him and made his stomach feel hollow. He missed the feeling of the god’s lips on his body, and seeing him had awakened this feeling for the first time in eons. Although XD seemed to adjust easier to being among the mortals, HD feared he would not be able to, and if he were to be stranded, he would not just be with his love in the darkness he so loved, but also with the beings he created and barely paid attention to.
-------
Darkness. That’s all there ever was. And that is all there ever would be. HD did not dislike the darkness, as it had been all he had known, but he had become lonely without XD by his side. Boredom was not something the god had experienced in his long life, as he had always had XD’s presence to keep him company. As he ran his hands through his relatively long chocolate colored hair, he missed XD’s touch. XD would play with his hair idly while he had watched the humans.
He could wait no longer. He wanted to be in XD’s presence, even if it meant becoming stuck in the very place he didn’t want to even watch a lot of the time. He watched through George’s eyes as he seemed to dream about some magical universe in their world. He watched in both horror and fascination as he not only flirted with the man he formed a country with but also danced with him in a very unfriend-like way. He could practically feel the phantom hands of the other man as he did as he was instructed-placing his hands on George’s hips, and in response George basically grinded on the man.
This was a very odd scene to HD, especially as George still often dreamt of Dream in a similar capacity. Why would he dream of another man in a seemingly romantic way? HD figured he would continue watching the strange dream unfold, as it was an interesting sequence of events. It did him no good to finally join the mortal world while the human whose body he would be in was asleep. So he settled into a comfortable position in his ever present darkness and watched George’s strange dream.
------
HD could feel as George’s body began to stir into wakefulness. The dream he had been watching with such intrigue began to fade in and out as the human lost the grips of his dream to reality. HD’s lips pulled upwards and he closed his eyes. Time to join his love in the world of the mortals.
George sat up in his bed outside the cat cafe. He was quite disoriented waking up somewhere away from the Harry Potter-esque world he had just been dreaming of. He climbed out of the bed and dangled his legs over the short drop to the familiar grass below. He released a quick breath and pushed himself off the bed. He walked a few steps around the cafe before a meow pierced through his empty thoughts.
He glanced over to see a cat sitting near his bed and he slowly walked over to analyze the creature before him. Satisfied with the presence of the cat, he walked into the cafe to look over the numerous other cats scattered around. Throughout all of this, his mind remained empty, as if he still couldn’t fully awaken from his slumber. Something stirred inside the blankness of his mind and he embraced it without hesitation.
HD stretched the almost familiar hands of his copy as he basked in the feel of finally being in the strange human’s body. It didn’t seem to feel as different as he had originally thought it would be, HD noticed with a small shock. The only difference was the fact that he could no longer feel his godly power coursing through his veins. This was not his body, he reminded himself as he took a slow step out of the cafe. Humans were not created to be able to handle the energy of the very gods that had given them life, and in being in a human’s body, his own power would remain dormant.
He knew George was still present in his head, and a fond protectiveness washed over him at recognizing his presence. He did not care how the mortals lived their life; who they killed or didn’t, but he didn’t want anything to happen to the familiar man who he now could interact with firsthand. He laid a hand on his chest in silent recognition of George before walking out of the cafe.
He wondered momentarily what he should do. His main mission was to find XD now that he was here, but he didn’t know the first thing about where to find him. XD had disappeared after George had promised to be his friend forever. He climbed up into the bed the human had slept in for so long, searching through his memories to see if he could find any trace of where his love had gone. He acknowledged how the man’s dream still floated at the surface of his memories. Maybe he had to do something similar to what was in the dream to attract the other creator god.
HD had always thrived in the presence of order and routine, whereas XD had longed for chaos and disorder. He wondered if he could figure out a plan to lure the god out to cause some chaos. He sat on the bed heavily, causing himself to bounce slightly. What could he do to cause the god of chaos to come out of his apparent hiding.
-------
HD stood at the community house, something he had grown to adore after becoming stranded in the world of the Dream SMP. It had been about a week since he had abandoned his realm in search of the missing god. After a few days of being in George’s body, the human had decided to allow HD full control and had instead decided to slumber away in his head. If he focused, the god could zero in on the mortal’s dreams. They always strayed to Dream, the god noticed with a small tug of his lips. He felt a warmth bloom in his chest as he thought of the humans’ relationship. He had found out after searching George’s memories that Dream had become a rather demanding presence in the world, and that despite how poorly he had treated the vessel, he always loved him.
That had reassured him that even if the gods were to be stranded forever in the mortal world, their love for each other would never fade, that even if the two were no longer the only beings in the universe they would remain bonded with each other for as long as they existed. HD was startled back to reality when a hand was waved in front of his face.
“George, what are you doing just standing here?” A voice asked and he quickly attributed it to the human’s best friend, Sapnap. HD blinked his light brown eyes as he focused on the half-demon in front of him. The other humans had become so used to not seeing George for weeks at a time, that HD had forgotten that they would of course stop to talk to the man if they saw him. Should he just drop the act immediately and tell the other that George was asleep in his head, or pretend that it was him?
Before he could decide, warm hands pressed themselves on either of his arms, near his elbows, “George, hey! Is everything okay with you?” Sapnap asked again, his brown eyes focused entirely on HD.
“I-I’m sorry I was just thinking.” HD stammered as he focused his gaze entirely on Sapnap. He would give himself away if the opportunity was needed, but for the moment he would pretend to be George. Sapnap broke into a grin, “Why can’t you just think like a normal person, instead of just standing somewhere like a lost cat?”
HD forced himself to laugh at the other, a quiet chuckle that pushed through his lips in a light breath , “If I were to do that people wouldn’t stop to stare.” He answered after a moment of laughter. Sapnap raised a dark brow at the other’s words, “Why would you want them to stare?”
HD pressed a finger to his lips with a glint in his eyes, “I won’t tell my secrets.” The brunette tilted his head slightly, “You’re an odd motherfucker, George.” He spoke as he straightened his posture, a laugh escaping the man’s lips, “So what were you thinking about?” He added, his familiar smile lingering on his lips.
There was no way HD could say what he was truly thinking without giving himself away. A thought suddenly struck him as he watched the fire demon in front of him, his eyes searching his face. He hadn’t quite been sure how he was going to attract XD’s attention if it was only going to be him putting forth his plan, but if he could convince Sapnap to take part in his plan, he could avoid having to tell the man the truth.
“What if I were to tell you I was hatching a plan to catch a god?”
------
After explaining the vague idea of his plan, and with a little bit of input from Sapnap to round it out, HD had finally set his thoughts into motion. What better way to draw out the god he loved than by threatening his very safety. XD didn’t really know who Sapnap was, after all. So what if he were to use Sapnap to convince the god that his most beloved was in trouble?
HD stood in the grassy plain in front of the large mushroom house in Kinoko Kingdom. He would pretend to be tending to the flowers around George’s house when Sapnap would ambush him and threaten to harm him if XD didn’t come out of hiding. HD hoped that the demon didn’t go too far and accidentally harm him, or he would surely give away his godhood.
HD ran his hand over a tall rose stem, pretending to note with satisfaction that the plant seemed to be growing well. George always held a soft fondness for flowers, and Kinoko Kingdom being a place where flowers thrived had been a great choice of home. He just hoped that his fake attention to detail caught XD’s attention, wherever he was hiding.
As he was bent over, running his hands over a poppy petal to admire its beautiful deep red color, a sharp point was pushed into his back suddenly. He widened his eyes in mock surprise, “Stand up, George.” Sapnap’s voice demanded with a cold lilt.
HD did as he was commanded, keeping his hands tightly at his sides, “Sapnap. Why are you doing this?” He asked with a forced tremor to his voice, “You know why I’m doing this, George. You’ve been keeping a god stuffed away in your pocket and never told any of us!” Sapnap bit out, shoving the point of his sword a little further into his back. HD grimaced; he didn’t have to play the part so well, the sword was starting to hurt now.
“How was I supposed to tell you, Sapnap? I haven’t seen Dream in a long time. What would you need him for in the first place?” HD ground out, daring a sideways glance back towards Sapnap. He could almost see the anger burning in his brown eyes. He was playing this part better than he expected.
“It doesn’t matter. You fully intended to keep him for yourself, didn’t you?” He snapped back. HD forced out a sigh, “I didn’t know he would stick around. I thought it was a one time thing.”
“So where is he now?”
HD wished he could even come up with an elaborate lie to keep up both of the facades. Before he could answer, though, Sapnap pulled him close to him and pressed the blade to his throat, “He’s in the trees behind us. I just heard him move.” He whispered to HD, “I know you’re out there! Come out now and I won’t hurt a hair on George’s precious head.” Sapnap called out, scanning the area around him.
Twigs cracked and broke as DreamXD walked out into the open. HD’s breath caught slightly at seeing the god with his own eyes. His heartbeat quickened and he could feel it hammering in his chest. Sapnap stared in wonder at the dark green cloak and strange mask, “There he is at long last. Lets talk.” He spoke, quickly recovering from his shock.
HD couldn’t see XD’s eyes on him, but he knew that was where his gaze was focused. His eyes didn’t leave where the god’s face was, “What do you want with me? Why would you threaten to harm your own best friend?” XD demanded in a deep voice that dripped with malice. Best friend? Could XD not tell that George wasn’t present in this situation?
If that was the case, why did he respond with such anger? As HD’s stomach dropped, he wondered if the god truly didn’t know it was him, or if he had been playing it off.
Sapnap grit his teeth, “I would never hurt George, but if you push me to it, I won’t hesitate.” XD took a step closer to the two, “What do you want with me?” He repeated with that same dangerous voice that caused HD to shudder, “You know what I want, DreamXD. I want an end to the violence on this server, to the violence Dream has caused.”
“I will not.” XD cut in immediately after Sapnap stopped talking. In response, Sapnap dug the blade deeper into HD’s neck, drawing blood. HD let out a small cry as the blood ran down his collar bone in warm rivulets. HD could feel the anger pulsating from XD as he saw the blood. Next thing he knew, Sapnap had disappeared from behind him.
HD released a breath and stumbled forward slightly, “XD, oh.” He breathed as he took another step towards his love. XD closed the gap quickly, a hand gripping HD’s chin to examine the cut. HD felt a flush draw over his cheeks at the sudden proximity of the one he loved, “Are you okay, George?” The god drawled softly. He couldn’t see XD’s gaze, but he knew now that there was nothing but fondness in the god’s eyes. He felt butterflies in the pit of his stomach at XD’s touch moving from his chin to his neck, “XD, I’m not George.” He whispered roughly. XD’s hands faltered and HD closed his eyes.
“HD?” XD murmured breathlessly after a long silence, “It’s me, XD.” He assured quietly. XD reached up and slowly withdrew the mask from his ethereal features. HD had never been more aware of the fact that he wasn’t in his own body at the moment. He wanted to push his lips to XD’s very desperately, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so in George’s body.
As he thought of George he remembered Sapnap being spirited away, “XD, you need to bring Sapnap back.” HD spoke quickly, completely changing the expression on XD’s face in an instant, “And why should I do that? He hurt you HD.” XD pouted as his eyes darted to the blood still present on HD’s neck.
“He didn’t mean to. It was part of the act.” HD spoke in a rush, “Don’t let him get hurt too.” He was unsure why he felt such an urge to protect the half-demon since he could care less, but he wondered briefly if it was because of George’s presence in his head.
XD stared at his love for a moment before snapping his mask back into place and snapping his fingers. Sapnap appeared behind the two, his brown eyes widened in horror. He glanced over the two before collapsing on his ass in the grass.
------
“Show me how to do it, XD. I’m tired of being here with you and not being able to kiss you.” HD begged the other as the two sat together near the shore of Kinoko Kingdom. George had slowly begun to stir in his head and become more present since the whole ordeal with Sapnap, and HD felt bad for keeping him locked away from his own body.
XD smiled at the brunette, the love shining in his bright green eyes, “Is this George saying that, or you?” He asked teasingly. HD rolled his eyes, “George doesn’t care about kissing you, XD.” A small flicker faltered the shine in XD’s eyes momentarily before he smiled, “Fine, I’ll teach you.”
-----
The brunette and blond sat amongst the shade of an unfamiliar forest, their hands twined together in a tight lock. Not long after the two’s conversation in Kinoko, XD had taught George how to summon a vessel of his true form. After he successfully did so, HD immediately detached his essence from George’s body and entered the vessel. HD had feared that he would be stuck in George’s body if he were to come to the mortal world, but upon seeing XD in his true form, he had hoped that he could bode just as well, and he had.
Now the two sat in vessels of their own bodies in the mortal world, languishing in the company of each other once again. HD leaned forward and placed a deep but short kiss to XD’s lips. XD seemed surprised at first, but before he could deepen the kiss HD pulled away with a smile. XD huffed at the sudden absence of his other half’s lips.
“You look like such a baby right now.” HD teased with a small chuckle, “You surprised me.” XD whined, “You still got a kiss though.” HD argued lightly, “I want another one.” XD murmured. HD shook his head, although his smile never left his face.
Suddenly XD’s lips were on his, his hand coming to rest on HD’s cheek. The gods’ lips moved in unison as XD pushed the kiss longer, although he never tried to deepen it himself. A few moments of their lips being together, XD pulled away with his own smile, “That’s better.”
HD laid his head on XD’s shoulder and breathed a deep sigh. Maybe it wasn’t so bad being among the mortals. Maybe he didn’t miss the darkness as much as he thought he would. Maybe he thought the brightness from the sun wasn’t as intrusive as XD had intended it to be in its creation. He could get used to being here, he thought with satisfaction.
