Work Text:

It was rather late at night when Carmen found herself alone in bed. She sleepily sat up, the blanket slowly sliding off her shoulders as she looked around the room for her lover. She pulled herself out of bed, her eyes drifting to the crib that they had set up in their bedroom. She sauntered over to it, looking down at the sleeping baby curled up under her blanket. The brunette smiled softly as she gently kissed the infant’s forehead, warmth consuming her as she stared down at the freckled baby.

She felt a soft breeze which drew her attention to the balcony where she could see her love through the window. The brunette sighed in relief as she made her way over to the door of the balcony. On it was a certain redheaded woman who was simply staring up at the stars, enthralled by the celestial bodies shimmering above her. Carmen quietly opened the door, silently sneaking up on her lover before wrapping her arms around her wife’s waist. She gently kissed the back of Ivy’s neck before asking, “Having trouble sleeping Ive’s?”

“Nah,” Ivy assured with a smile as she leaned into the embrace. “Sorry If I woke ya Carm, just thinkin’ about stuff.”

“What stuff,” Carmen inquired with slight worry.

“Just how stuff works out I guess,” Ivy explained as she rubbed the back of her neck gently.

“Oh,” Carmen responded, clearly curious.

“It’s just…...If Zack hadn’t totally trashed our car we would’ve never met,” the redhead stated. “Things just lined up so perfectly it seems.”

“Ivy,” Carmen said softly, honestly taken aback by the younger woman’s words.

“I mean think about it Carm. We wouldn’t have been at that donut shop tryin’ ta steal stuff….and if that was the case then….we wouldn’t have been able ta meet...we would’ve never been friends,” Ivy continued, her hand gripped her arm sadly as she said that. “And sure, men and Zack have been hurt….I’ve been hurt. But at the end of the day, I could never trade this life. Yeah, you leavin’ sucked a lot…..but I got ta see ya again…..and now look at us.” Carmen hugged Ivy tighter as tears rolled down her face. She’d never felt so much love in her life, and getting all this love from Ivy, despite the pain the brunette put her through was truly an honor.

“I feel the same Ive’s,” Carmen agreed after a moment, kissing Ivy’s shoulders gently as she spoke. She snuggled close to her wife, Ivy’s warmth quickly consuming her as she found herself almost putting all her weight on the redhead. The Bostonian woman didn’t care though, she loved it in fact.

“It’s funny thinkin’ about it now but back then I was wicked mad when Zack wrecked our car,” Ivy thought aloud, a small smile curling on her face as she stared at the moon above. “Happy he was okay of course but so pissed that he totaled Lydia….And yet that lead me ta meetin’ my wife.”

“Still, I’m sorry you had to sacrifice Lydia to meet me,” Carmen said in a slightly somber tone.

“I mean yeah, Lydia was important ta me. But she’s a car Carm. I could easily rebuild her with a bit of money and the right parts. I cared for Lydia, sure, but I would never choose a car over being with you,” Ivy admitted while pulling her arms close, refusing to look Carmen in the eye after she said that. Carmen gently guided Ivy’s eyes to hers, the two starred into the others. She smiled softly before leaning in and kissing the redhead lovingly.

“I….I don’t know what to say Ives…. I feel the same. I regret leaving you and Zack,” Carmen said in a soft tone after the kiss broke. She sighed and pulled her wife into a gentle hug, feeling the smaller woman’s warmth envelop her. “I only really realized how important you were when I left. I felt so lonely without you two around. I missed…..I missed this….. I missed the family I had left,” Carmen explained as she squeeze Ivy’s shoulder softly. “I love my mother but I felt like something was missing…..I know what that was now.”

“And then ya came back,” the redhead teased as she broke the hug to literally swoop Carmen off her feet. The thief was taken aback by this but giggled happily and she leaned against Ivy’s chest, silently listening to her heartbeat.

“Of course Ivy,” the brunette affirmed with the brightest smile on her face. Then something came to mind, something she should’ve realized much sooner. “We were meant to be from the beginning huh,” Carmen voiced as she snuggled into the shorter woman’s arms. Truth be told they had been a perfect match from the beginning, especially when the brunette thought about how well they worked together. Ivy had always been there for her and had always cared about her, if only Carmen had recognized that earlier.

“I’d like ta think that as well Carm,” the freckled woman agreed before kissing her wife’s cheek gently. “I love ya a lot, more than ya know.”

“I love you too Ivy,” the brunette responded lovingly, knowing without a doubt in her mind that she was the luckiest woman in the world. They pressed their foreheads together, staring into the other’s eyes as they felt their hearts racing. The distance between them quickly closed as Carmen captured Ivy’s lips with her own, gently caressing the freckled woman’s cheek as she poured all her love into their kiss. She could feel her heart pounding as she pulled the shorter woman closer, never wanting to let her go. When they separated they simply stared into each other’s eyes, the stars above reflecting off their irises. Carmen could’ve sworn she saw a shooting star pass through her wife’s eyes as they were entranced by each other.

“Thank you for waiting for me,” Carmen whispered gratefully as tears collected in her eyes. She felt like she didn’t deserve this, she didn’t deserve all the love Ivy had been giving her. Those thoughts were dashed away as she felt the redhead’s lips against her own once again.

“Thank you for being my wife,” Ivy said with a gentle smile. Carmen bit her lip gently before pulling Ivy into a tight hug, soft tears rolling down her cheeks as she felt the warmth of her wife. She smiled softly as she heard a small yawn as she leaned back to once again look into Ivy’s currently sleepy green eyes.

“Suppose that means it’s time we get back to bed hmm,” Carmen teased with a bright smile.

“Guess so, sorry Carm,” Ivy apologized with a small sleepy grin.

“Don’t apologize, just get some rest now, okay,” the brunette stated as the freckled woman nodded.

“Okay okay,” Ivy laughed softly as she easily carried her wife inside, gently laying her onto the bed. She quickly took her spot next to the taller woman, smiling as she felt Carmen kiss her forehead gently. “I love ya Carm.”

“I love you too Ivy,” the brunette affirmed as the redhead drifted off to sleep. Carmen stared at her wife’s sleeping face before snuggling close, thinking about how lucky she was to have such an amazing spouse in her life. ‘We truly were meant to be.’
