Work Text:
A man strides towards you. A man unparalleled, unparalleled by anything tangible and only equal to the boundless. Whomever this paragon is, he takes his seat across from you, sitting so closely and intimately. He listens to the melodious lilt of an angel’s symphony, enamoured by soothing chords of elegance. He is in rapt, and the consecrated melodies of the fading commemoration seemed prosaic in comparison to your sweet cadence.
“Not feeling like a party tonight?” The man asks, waiting for the return of your serenading voice.
“Believe me that it is not that, I just wanted a break was all.” You now look to the sky above, appreciating the fleeting moments of the horizon limned in lurid orange, a beauty only surpassed by the grace of your own countenance, painted a toothsome colour of red upon your cheeks.
“I would not be expecting you to grow tired of festivities. You always enjoyed such celebrations back at UA. But, if you have grown tired with it completely then that’s fine as well. We can always retire for the night.”
You laughed. Your laugh was an effluence of elegance, a wafting breeze of soothing excitement that sets my ribcage fluttering, sending the greatest of warmth and coddling my innermost places.
“Even after everything that has happened, you are still as timid as always. I am glad that has not changed about you – I never wished anything about you to change.” You laugh once more, tearing out all my senses in brisk successiveness until there was not a single word that could be spoken with this entranced tongue. There could be a wealth of words I could say to and about you, but I say nothing. I am choked into silence, my body coerced into stillness with only thin needles of fire emanating throughout my entire form. Fire beneath my skin, thin flames lapping and conflagrating while a rush of blood comes in a resounding boom to my ears. My eyes go dark – swallowed in flame.
“I do think however, about how things would change from here. We are still the same at heart, but so much of the world around us has changed. Do you worry about what the future will look like for us?”
“I do not know what it will look like, but I do know that you look beautiful in that dress.” You smile, inspiring my heart once more. “Would you like to head home now?”
Rigid, cold sweat pours over me. My body shakes without control or allay; my skin grows sallower than summer grass, and I feel my heart deathly squeezed. A creeping blackness, crawling and stretching its inimical claws towards me. I can see it in your loving eyes that consume me, and know the blackness of a fleeting hope. I feel, deeply within my heart, that death is very near.
However, I gaze to you again. I see your beautiful face, your elegant voice, your graceful body, and the delicacy of your coloured cheeks. Such softness, such beauty was forbidden to me. For that beauty, for that elegance, for that softness, for that sweetness, what I would do for you to know what it felt like, to tear your eyes away – I would do anything.
You nod your head, and you egress from your seat. I glance to you one final time as your beauty fades into the distance. My heart is set at rest once again, and the blackness disappears. I am convicted, and I will be seeing your beauty once again very shortly.
