Harvest - Suptober21 Day 1

Summary:

Inspired by @Diminuel Harvest Suptober21 Day 1 Fanart on Twitter of Cas kissing Dean's cheek while holding little Jack in his arms as Dean carries a large pumpkin and smiles at the warm affection.

Work Text:

When Dean, Cas, and baby Jack go to their first pumpkin patch, they actually get three pumpkins, one for each of them. Once they're home and setup in the kitchen, they decide Cas and Dean will carve their pumpkins, while little Jack gets to paint his.

Cas is unfairly good at carving. He does an intricate design flawlessly, which he saw on Pinterest the other day, while Dean just grumbles as he’s attempting to hide the, much less impressive, pumpkin he’s working on. Cas of course finishes first and both Dean and Jack clap for him, even though Dean rolls his eyes, more at himself for being truly proud of Cas rather than jealous like he was earlier.

Cas helps Jack paint a scribbly jack-o’-lantern face on his smaller pumpkin while Dean finishes up whatever he’s making. When Dean announces he’s done, both Cas and Jack perk up, waiting expectantly for the reveal. Dean turns his pumpkin around showing them what he personally considers to be a ‘not a half bad scary pumpkin'. He went horror style carving a twisted sharp toothed monster with dripping pumpkin innards assisting in the effect.

Dean’s smug smile fades quickly when Jack breaks out into wide eyed scared tears and Cas looks at him like he’s got two heads, totally baffled by Jack’s terrified reaction but also trying not to rain on Dean’s parade. After a moment to process the situation, they both crowd around Jack with soothing words and a gentle pat on his back telling him he doesn’t have to be scared, his daddies are here and they won’t let the mean pumpkin monster get him.

Dean gets real close until Jack meets his eyes and can’t help but gaze adoringly at his usually tough little guy losing it over this pumpkin creature, that Dean thought was pretty cool actually… Dean rubs Jack’s back as Cas rubs Jack’s arms from behind, smiling at Dean despite the slight worry worked into his face from Jack’s outburst.

Dean coos quietly, “It’s ok bud, that old vegetable can’t hurt you.” Of course, Cas chimes in with facts and science. “Dean, technically pumpkins are fruits, since they are products of the seed-bearing structure of flowering plants-.” Dean can’t help but interrupt. “Cas… Sweetheart, pumpkins are Not fruits, don’t confuse the kid.” Cas goes to interrupt again and Dean can see the lengthy sciency explanation about to roll off his tongue so he bulldozes on. “Besides, our tough little guy wouldn’t be scared of a measly little fruit would he?”

By this time Jack’s tears have stopped and he’s just looking back and forth between his loving dads, but his expression is still stricken like he’s not sure all is right with the world quite yet. Dean can tell any moment he could start the waterworks again. Cas raises his eyebrow silently asking if Dean is done with his antics, but all Dean can do is smile cheekily up at his perfect husband. Cas huffs and Dean knows he’s won in some way, though he’s not completely clear how. “Technically pumpkins are more often considered squash rather than fruit.” Dean doesn’t hesitate. “Perfect! See Jack? Little buddy, this things not scary! It’s only squash! And do you know what we do with squash?!”

Dean catches Cas’s facial expression as soon as it dawns on him what Dean’s about to do. Cas of course attempts to stop him with an outstretched hand and an almost slow motion “Dean no!” But it’s too late, Dean’s already picked up the rolling pin Cas left on the counter. “You Squash It!”

Jack laughs and squeals excitedly as Dean brings the rolling pin down on the offending squash monster and bits of orange viscera and chunks of pumpkin flesh fly through the air coating a three foot radius in slimy goop.

Cas obviously can’t decide between being frustrated at the mess and content at the instant improvement in Jack’s mood. Through a loving smile Cas grits out, “You’re cleaning this up.” Dean sets down the rolling pin, ruffles Jack’s hair, dispelling a few seeds and making Jack laugh even more, and goes in for a kiss with his adorable husband. Cas is trying, with much difficulty, not to laugh. “But you’ll help me right sweetheart?” Dean’s smug smile is back and Cas just rolls his eyes, taking practically his whole body with it.

Before their lips meet, Dean licks a stray mush of pumpkin insides off Cas’s cheek and they all can’t hold in the infectious giggles any longer. It’s barely a real kiss they’re smiling so much through it and Dean’s heart couldn’t be more full. Cleaning up is going to be So worth it.
